The skin on my back was still burning.
Enzo and Grey carried me to my chambers as I forced myself not to pass out from the pain. I had never experienced anything like this before in my life! It was excruciating.
“You’re okay,” Grey whispered.
“It hurts!” I cried out as they lowered me on the couch.
“Grey, get the burn ointment!” Enzo ordered. “You’re okay, Celine.”
“E-Enzo it hurts so bad please!” I begged. “Make it stop!”
“Goddammit, Grey where is the ointment!”
Grey hurried back in the room, unscrewing the top of the bottle of the ointment. I screamed, feeling the little droplets on my back. It felt like my skin was boiling.
“It’s okay,” Enzo insisted. “Shh, squeeze my hand Celine. Grey keep going!”
“I don’t want to hurt her!” Grey exclaimed.
“Please stop!” I sobbed.
“He can’t Celine, we have to treat the burns, okay?”
The pain was becoming unbearable, now. I could barely keep my eyes open.
“Celine, open your eyes!” Enzo urged.
“I…can’t…”
Darkness immediately enclosed me.
I hated being locked in the house.
Sure it was a beautiful castle, but there was so much to be seen out there. So much to experience.
“Sela!” A young woman entered the room. “Sela, something is wrong with Eric!”
“What do you mean?” I questioned.
“His fever is higher than ever…I fear that he won’t make it through the night if something isn’t done.”
“I’m…my father told me I’m not supposed to use my powers.”
“Please, Sela. He’s all I have.” Jane whispered.
I nodded and followed her to the next floor down. In bed was Eric and he was sweating profusely and breathing heavily.
His blonde hair was sticking to his forehead as his half closed eyes fell on us. Jane had been right. No way could he survive the night like this.
I sat down next to Eric and pushed his hair back before placing my hand on his forehead. A light glowed and slowly I felt his temperature go down. His breathing became softer and his eyes opened more. I had healed him.
“How are you feeling Eric?” I asked.
“So much better, Sela…thank you Duchess.”
I nodded. “Of course.”
“Duchess Sela?” A voice squeaked behind me.
“Yes?”
“Your father is looking for you.”
Oh no.
“Sela, what did I tell you? You cannot use your powers anymore, they can be traced!” Father exclaimed.
“Father, Eric was dying. What’s the point of having these powers if I can’t use them to help people?”
“Do you not realize how serious this is, Sela? Sameal will find you and the first thing he will do is kill you, is that what you want?”
“No, but I also don’t want to hide in this castle and not be able to cure people when I know I can, it isn’t fair father! I want to leave and-”
“No! You cannot leave! You are only safe here.”
“I cannot stay here forever.” I stomped off, my long dress swishing around my ankles.
I just wanted to get away.
My eyes slowly fluttered open.
My back no longer hurt and I was kind of confused about where I was before realizing I was on Earth in my chambers.
That was so strange.
“Celine?” I turned and saw Enzo sitting in a chair next to my bed. “You’re finally awake. Are you okay?”
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
“How do you feel? How’s your back?”
“Fine.”
“Are you sure?” He questioned. “Can you sit up?”
I easily sat up and there was no pain. “I feel fine, Enzo.”
“Lift up your shirt,” I gave him a scandalized look. “Come on, not like that, I just want to see your back.”
I sighed but turned around. Slowly, Enzo lifted my shirt up. I tried to ignore the tingles I got feeling his fingers dance across my spine slowly. He gasped.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
“The burns…they’re still here but it’s like they’ve kind of healed. Like time has already passed or something. I think you healed yourself again.”
Well that was getting out of control and fast.
“It seems so.”
“You have to tell me what happened, Celine, everything. Did you see Alpha Rafe? Was he here?”
I shook my head before explaining what happened, with a few lies. I still wasn’t ready to tell Enzo about me seeing into other people’s minds. It was not normal and it seemed to only happen when I was in danger.
I had to figure out why.
“So the Incubus told you all of this?” Enzo questioned. “He just did a whole speech on the grand plan before kidnapping you?”
“Flaming Incubi love to talk. It’s a part of their narcissistic nature.” I lied.
“Did he say anything more about Alpha Rafe?”
“No, not really. Just that he wanted to hurt you.”
“Why did he want you?” Enzo asked.
“Apparently I’m the key to your downfall.” I murmured. “And I guess whatever The Seraphic Paragon is can be found through me. I don’t know much about that though.”
Enzo shook his head as he stood up. “Why did you go off the grounds, Celine? I told you it was dangerous and you still didn’t listen to me!”
“My wings get tired, Enzo. I just needed to fly a little bit and stretch them out. It’s not easy pretending to be something that I’m not while you take your time falling in love.”
“I’m sorry, it’s just not that simple, okay? To give my heart to someone when I know what love can be like…it’s just difficult!”
“I understand-”
“No you don’t, Celine! You don't experience love and feelings and things like that. You can’t possibly understand what this is like!” Enzo yelled.
Tears filled my eyes. “I’m not emotionless, Enzo. I-I have feelings.”
“Yeah, only positive ones. You’re all bubbly and hopeful and you don’t have any idea about negative emotions. Anger, betrayal, devastation. You only know rainbows and sunshine.”
“I feel pain. I’m feeling it right now, you’re being mean to me!” I exclaimed.
“I’m not a nice person Celine! I’m not good or kind or anything you are trying to make me out to be so I’ll fall in love! Stop being delusional and get real! Odds are you’re going to hell.”
“Enzo-”
“I just don’t have time for falling in love! I have to save my pack and this love s**t is just a distraction!” He stormed out of the room and I heard the front door slam.
I didn’t even get to tell him about my dream.
--
“Celine, are you okay?”
I looked up and saw Grey entering my room. I quickly wiped my face.
“Of course I am! I’m wonderful, in fact, perfect.”
“You’re crying.”
I sighed. “Enzo said some mean things to me.”
He shook his head. “Don’t…don’t take it personally okay? He’s a very touchy person and he can lash out sometimes.”
“I just want to help him and he says I’m delusional. I’m doing everything I can to make his life better and he just doesn’t care. He says the pack is more important.”
“The pack is very important to be fair,” Grey said delicately.
“I know that, it’s just…there are other things too,” I sniffled. “All I’ve ever done is try to help Enzo and he’s so cruel to me.”
“Like you said, he’s had a hard life.”
I sighed and nodded. I had to remember that. Enzo wasn’t this way just to be miserable. He had a tough break when it came to his parents. But wouldn’t that make him want to be kind to others so they would never feel the devastation that he did?
“You’re right,” I whispered. “I just…I don’t understand him sometimes.”
“He’s my best friend and I don’t really understand him either, Celine. It’s not…just give him a day or two to process what happened. Alpha Rafe makes him…well he acts in irrational ways when it comes to him.”
“What happened between them?”
“I think he should be the one to tell you,” Grey admitted. “It’s not my place. It’s a rivalry that probably won’t end until one of them is dead.”
“Do you think we can defeat The Grim Hounds?” I asked.
“I um…god I hope so. I just…I want this all to end. I want to do normal things like fall in love and settle down and have some kids.”
“I wish Enzo wanted to fall in love like you. It would make my life easier.”
“What do you mean?”
“Nothing…Grey do you dream a lot?”
“Sure, I dream every night, why?”
“I just…I haven’t had a dream in a very long time and when I passed out from the pain, I had one. It was strange, but I was someone else.”
“That can happen,” Grey stated. “You don’t always dream about being yourself. Who were you?”
“Her name was Sela. She had some powers but her father didn’t want her to use them.”
“Is that how your father felt about your mystic powers?”
“I um…I don’t know my father. Or my mother for that matter. I don’t have a family. I don’t have anyone actually.”
“Hey, you have me, Celine. A-and this pack. You have Enzo even though he’s not always the nicest person. You’re not alone.”
I couldn’t help but smile.
I liked Grey so much. He was sweet and always knew how to make me feel better. I wished that Enzo could be like him.
Maybe then I wouldn’t be on the track to hell.
