I just stared at Mira.
“I um…”
“Don’t know what to say? How about the truth?” Mira asked loudly. “You slept with Enzo while he and I were together!”
“What’s going on?” Enzo hurried over to us.
Mira turned and slapped him in the face too. Gasps echoed through the air. Mira had just hit the Alpha.
She didn’t even seem to care at all. She was furious and I understood it completely. She was hurt and betrayed.
“Mira, I’m so sorry!” I exclaimed. “I didn't mean to hurt you, I swear.”
“No, you just plotted and schemed to get my boyfriend. You knew I was in love with him and you still went after him. What the f**k kind of friend are you?” Mira demanded.
“It’s not Celine’s fault,” Enzo stepped in front of me protectively. “I was the one who pursued this. She was hesitant the entire time. This was me, Mira, hate me.”
“I can’t because I love you so much. And that meant nothing to you!”
“It did Mira, but…I’m in love with Celine. She’s my soulmate and I’m sorry.”
“What’s wrong with me Enzo?” Mira cried. “I gave you everything you asked. I let you do everything you wanted sexually and I even lied to Celine for you.”
“Lied about what?” I asked. “What does she mean Enzo? We don’t lie to each other.”
Mira laughed. “Oh Enzo lies to you a lot. Our first date? I sucked his d**k. And that time you heard us in the tent? Wasn’t our first time.”
I looked at Enzo with wide eyes. “You lied to me about that?”
“Celine, wait, babe. It’s just, I didn’t want you to be disappointed in me.”
“I am right now because you lied to me! Why would you do that?”
“Because he thinks you’re what were the words, Enzo? ‘A little judgmental goody two shoes who knows nothing about s*x and probably isn’t good at it’?”
Well that stung quite a bit.
“I’m not good at s*x?” I asked.
“No, Celine, you are! You see how much I like making love to you. You’re amazing! The best I’ve ever had!” Enzo insisted.
“He told me the same thing.” Mira shook her head. “You know, Celine, I actually was furious with you, but…maybe you were just manipulated like I was.”
“I’m not manipulating anyone! We dated and it didn’t work out, Mira, it’s not the end of the world.”
“It’s the end of my world Enzo! I was ready to give you anything! I wanted to be your Luna and bear your children! But you just used me for s*x and to get to Celine. That really hurts Enzo.”
“You’re blowing this out of proportion, Mira! We were basically broken up when Celine and I first made love and I broke up with you immediately. I didn’t have an affair or anything.”
“You had an emotional affair, Enzo! Our entire relationship, all you cared about was Celine. How she would feel about us being s****l and if she thought we were going to work out. You didn’t care about our relationship at all!”
“I’m sorry, Mira okay? I am very sorry for how I’ve hurt you.”
“Sorry is like a bandaid on a bullet wound.” Mira whispered. “You’re not sorry, but you will be.”
She walked away and everyone was staring at us. This was not how I wanted everyone to find out that Enzo and I were in love.
Enzo turned to me. “I didn’t mean what I said about you, Celine.”
“Did you mean to lie to me?” I asked.
“Babe-”
“We need to get going. We have to save Sela from one of those men.”
We all started walking in complete silence. What was there to say right now anyway?
All that could be heard was the crunching of our feet on the dried leaves of the forest. Occasionally there was rustling from animals in the bushes.
I glanced over at Enzo. He had his hands in his pocket and eyes in front of him. I kind of missed him, honestly. But I was still mad at him for lying to me.
He had gotten so mad at me for lying for good reasons when he was lying to me the whole time. I didn’t like that at all.
Feeling thirsty, I reached into my bag. My fingers brushed against Rekz’s chain. I froze as my mind connected with his.
Something felt different this time. I didn’t think this was a memory. This was happening right now.
“Are you sure we’re on the right path?” A man asked Rekz.
“Yes. I can smell her.” Rekz answered. “She’s so close.”
“Are we ambushing again?”
“No, we need a different strategy. I need to get her when she’s alone.”
“Alpha Enzo will never let her out of his sight.”
“So we distract him and then grab her. We need to knock her out.” Rekz stated. “If she’s awake, we won’t be able to take her. Those powers she has…they’re unlike anything I've ever seen.”
“How close are we?” The man questioned.
“Maybe twenty minutes behind them. I still don’t know where they’re going though. But Alpha Rafe doesn’t care about that. He just wants the girl.”
“We should speed up if we want to get to her then.”
“We will. And they’ll have no idea we’re coming.” Rekz laughed.
I fell to the ground as I let the chain go.
“Celine!” Enzo hurried over to me. “Are you okay?”
“He’s coming!” I whispered. “Rekz is right behind us. He’s coming for me. He’s going to distract you and take me.”
“Pierce, we have to change directions or something!” Enzo said as he helped me up.
“It won’t help. It’s me. He can smell me.” I said.
“We can hide her scent and change directions.” Pierce said. “We have to do it quickly though.”
“Do what needs to be done.”
I was laying on the ground as the Bonepikes surrounded me. I wasn’t exactly scared, but a cloaking spell had never been put on me.
“Close your eyes and relax, Celine.” Pierce commanded me.
I listened and immediately I felt as though I was sinking into the floor. I wasn’t sure if that was supposed to happen, but I didn’t want to ruin anything.
Slowly, exhaustion came over me. Although I was fighting to stay awake, it wasn’t working for me. I think I was falling asleep.
I had no idea what to do.
Lev or Doran could be the one destined to hurt me and the world. How would I know who?
Unfortunately Jane’s readings said nothing about recognizing who The Depraved Fiend was. I would have to come to the conclusion on my own and hope that I picked correctly.
I thought about Lev and Doran. Both men had come out of nowhere and were suddenly in love with me. They both wanted me to marry them and choose them above any other men. But both were also very sweet to me and I could tell they cared deeply.
Unless they were just very good liars, of course.
It couldn’t be Lev. He had been with me for months. I made love to him for the first time and shared my dreams and secrets with him. But maybe as The Depraved Fiend that’s exactly what he wanted. He needed me to trust him and put my life in his hands.
But how could it be Doran? He just wanted to show me a different side of life. He gave me experiences that I never thought I would have. We made love in front of the sunset, on the beach where I had always wanted to be. But what if as my enemy he was luring me into a false sense of security?
This was much too hard. I couldn’t believe that either of these men would hurt me. Maybe the Depraved Fiend was neither of them. They were just two men who wanted to be with me.
Why didn’t I think of that?
Because it was silly and naive, probably. Either way, I needed to speak to them both. I was going to find out who The Depraved Fiend was tonight.
***
“So have you finally made a choice Sela?” Doran asked.
“Maybe,” I smiled.
“I thought you said you would decide tonight.” Lev stated.
“The night is still young.”
“So what are we doing here?”
I put my hands out and lifted them up. “One of you is my enemy and the other is truly in love with me. We are not leaving this room until I find out who The Depraved Fiend is.”
