CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE “You came?” The huge hospital pillows swallowed Captain Rojas. “Come in.” The nurse nodded for Alexis to enter. She stepped inside, tortured by the beeping machines and tubes sticking from Rojas’ body. He raised his hand, groaning. “Come over here.” He swallowed, moving tubes. “To the bed.” Alexis exhaled and meandered to him. “You’re tense,” he said. “I take it you don’t like hospitals?” “Who does?” His swollen face spread into a bloated smile. “You’re a good person, Alexis. I used to be too. I let myself change.” She eased beside him on the bed. “I’m not here to judge you.” He chuckled then groaned. “That’s the first time you’ve given me the benefit of the doubt since you came back to town.” He looked at the ceiling. “I’m dying, Alexis.” “You can’t give up.
