Chapter 18

After about 10 minutes of chanting in his mind, Stefan Spoke up. He pushed his glasses up his narrow nose and sighed. This curse was powerful, it was taking all that he had to break it and now he needed help. He knew that his son wasn't as strong as him but he needed him. He gave Lewis an old yellowed page and said, "Lewis, here's the page. I need you to read this word for word." Lewis took the page and nodded at his father. He had been practicing for this moment for far too long. But now that the moment was here, he was nervous. He had never done spells in a life or death situation before. He was worried that he would mess up. Lewis' mum patted Sophia's forehead with a cold cloth. Sophia was burning up. She looked at her arm and saw the black veins creeping up to her shoulder. They had only minutes to save the girl. "We're cutting it close." Lewis's mum said with a frown. By now, Sophia was barely breathing and had broken out in a cold sweat. She tossed and turned as if in a horrible nightmare that only she could see. In her mind, she was trapped in a corner with monsters that were shaped like humans. They came at her with teeth that could kill and she knew that they would eat her. She shouted for help but no one came to her rescue. "Read it now Lewis." His father commanded him. Lewis cleared his throat and started to read, " Air of seas Land of greens Take this curse Back to the first Leave it be And you go free I take this curse and lift it from you and put it back in the ground where this belongs!" Lewis was shouting by the end. He felt power in the room as he read. The lights started to flicker but he didn't stop chanting. Again he said the spell, once it was over, and he started again but stopped as a warm white fog crept into the room. This fog was so thick that the family couldn't even see their hand out in front of them. "What's going on?" Lewis asked, his voice dripping with fear. He had never seen a spell like this. He was worried that he did something wrong. "Just let it pass." Stefan said calmly. He had seen this fog before, when he did the spell last time. He remembered the dead boy on the stone ground, the fog touched him and quickly left, knowing that it's job was not of use anymore. Stefan prayed that this would not happen again. About a minute later, the white fog disappeared almost in a heartbeat. Lewis's mother looked over Sophia with a frown. The fog only did half of the job. "That wasn't good enough." Lewis's mother said looking at Sophia. The black veins had crept back down to the middle of her arm but they were still there. She frowned, they needed more power, but she knew that they didn't have it. She looked at both of her boy with a frown. They were as white as the fog. She knew that the spell took a lot out of her boys. Doing it again would put their lives at risk and she couldn't make them do that. Lewis frowned. Even though he was weak, he still felt anger rage through him. "What do you mean 'that wasn't good enough'?! We can't let her die!" Lewis shouted at his parents. He looked at the almost lifeless Sophia, he didn't want her to die. His mum looked at Lewis as she thought for a minute, running through her mind of the list of spells and remedies. Her mind stopped to one remedy that could work, she hadn't seen it done before, but she had read about it. She frowned, she didn't know how to do it properly, but she believed that it was her only chance to save the girl on their couch. "There's one more thing we can do. Bleed out the rest. It's an old method but it's the only chance that we have to save her." His mother said. "Well, do it. If it means saving her!" Lewis said and got up from the ground. He started to pace the room even though he felt light headed, just sitting was driving him mad. Stefan looked at his wife. He had heard about bleeding out cruses, but no one did them anymore. They had killed too many people in the past. He questioned if she was really thinking clearly. "It's risky, it just might kill her." Stefan said to his wife. "This will kill her if we don't do anything!" Lewis shouted at his parents. He knew that they didn't have much time and if this was the only spell that could save her, he wanted them to do it. "Calm down Lewis!" Stefan said with a sigh. He couldn't have his son acting up like this now. "Leave. Go up stairs. We'll call you down when it's over." He did not have the patience to deal with him any longer. He needed him to leave so they could work. Lewis stopped in mid pace. He shook his head at them and for the first time, he stood his ground. "No, I'm staying." He said firmly. Lewis's mum frowned. She had never seen him disobey them before. "This isn't a choice. Go." She said in a strict tone and pointed upwards. She would have to talk to him after this about it. He gave his parents one last look then ran up stairs. He couldn't believe that his parents would make him leave in such a intense moment. He hated that his parents always sheltered him about their past and about a lot of magic. He wanted to understand more from them. He wanted them to talk about this stuff more. He wanted to have a better communication with them. Most of all, he wanted them to know that he knew more then what they thought. He sat down on this bed and started to write in his journal to keep his mind busy. He was about half way done with a page when he heard Sophia scream. He jumped to his feet and threw his journal on the floor, not caring where it landed. He knew she was in danger and he just prayed that she was still alive. He ran down stairs to see his parents cleaning a knife. "What happened?" He begged. "We did it. We got it out." His mum said as she smiled weakly. She whipped her bloodied hands on a white cloth. She knew now why this remedy was never used, she thought back to how Sophia shuttered shook each time she put the knife to her. She could feel the power from the curse drip from her veins into the bowl below with every drop of blood. The remedy was torture and she never wanted to do this again. She didn't want to tell Lewis about the details of the spell though, she didn't want him to live life the way they did. She wanted him to have something more pure. "What was that scream?" He asked. "Bleeding it out isn't always the most painless thing. Sophia screamed and that is how we knew the cruse was gone. She felt pain." Stefan said, holding back the full truth. He didn't want to tell him that they had to stop her heart or that they had to drain a pint of blood from her. "You hurt her?" Lewis asked, peering over his parent shoulders to see Sophia. Stefan tried to step in the way of his son, he didn't want him to see the full damage that they had caused. But as Stefan stepped in Lewis' path, Lewis quickly walked around him. "She won't remember it, trust me." Lewis walked over to the couch to see Sophia passed out , her arm that had the black veins, dripping in blood. Lewis was horrified at the sight as he dropped down to his knees beside her. He gasped as he looked at the deep red gashes dragged across her arm. "Nine times you did this?" Lewis asked his parents as he counted the cuts. It looked like she was cutting herself. He had practiced magic before but he had never fully understood how dangerous it could be. In a matter of 30 minutes, it could kill. Lewis's mother bent over and started to wrap Sophia's arm in a white cloth. She didn't want her son to look at the mess anymore. Quickly the white cloth started to show streaks of red bleeding through. Stefan knew that this as going to be a long conversation with his son. He tried so hard to keep the terrible facts about magic from him, but he was starting to believe that this would be impossible. "Whoever did this curse was really powerful. We had to make sure everything was out of her system." "She's going to see this you know." Lewis said and looked back at Sophia. "We'll heal it later on. But first we need to call her parents about the curse." Stefan said. He wanted to let them know to watch out for their family better. "They won't know anything about it. Sophia is as clueless as it gets with Vestlers." Lewis told him and shook his head. If she knew nothing, he was sure that her parents probably knew as much as her. "We'll make up something then. Can we have your phone?" Stefan asked. "Sure." Lewis said and got out if phone out of his pocket. After his parents walked away out of the room, he started to count the red makes on her arm again. His fingers traced her arm gently as if he touched her any harder, she would break. His heart was breaking as he counted. "I'm so sorry Sophia." He said and ran his fingers lightly down her arm once again. After about 15 minutes of silence, Sophia moved, sending Lewis to jump. Sophia was aware that she was laying on a couch very quickly. She took a deep breath and realized that where ever she was didn't smell like home. "What are you doing?" Sophia asked Lewis as she opened her eyes to look at him. "Nothing." he said and held back a smile. Her parents did it, they saved her. She pushed herself up from the couch and winced. Lewis wanted to push her back down, to tell her to rest, but he thought it best to do nothing. Sophia felt pain in her arm and looked over at it. She saw that her arm that was bandaged up with red bleeding through. She was confused what had happened. She was worried if Lewis did this to her. She knew that he was different but she didn't think he could do something like this. "What the hell happened?" "I can explain." Lewis said and sat down next to her on the couch. He bit his lip, wondering if he should be just honest. He knew that she wouldn't understand a lot of it, but maybe it was best if she knew. "Yes please do Lewis." She said bluntly, clearly mad and confused at him. "Do you remember coming over here?" Sophia racked her mind, trying to remember how she really came here. To be honest, she didn't remember much after Libby's place. "Um, kind of. I came here to talk and you were going to eat or something. That's all I remember." "Ok well-"but just as he was about to explain, Lewis's Parents walked into the room. "You where cursed." Stefan said bluntly. He believed that she needed to know what had happened. Her family line is one of the most important ones and he was sure that lots of people would want to try to kill them. She needed to know how to protect herself. "You were cursed by someone that had a lot of power. It was an old curse." "We are trying to say that, someone wants you dead Sophia. Do you have any idea who that could be?" Lewis' mum asked softly. She understood how scary this could be, she remembered when her family told her about magic. Sophia couldn't believe her ears. This could not be happening. She knew no one that would have wanted her dead. "No, I'm sorry, I don't." Sophia said with a frown. She couldn't imagine someone wanting to kill her. Tears crept into her eyes at the thought of it. It terrified her. "Do you think the Harlow's would do this?" Stefan asked. Lewis shot his father a look. He was planning on easing into this question. Lewis knew that he needed to be careful in what he said to her. "No, why do you think that? Libby is my friend." Sophia frowned as she whipped a tear from her eye. She couldn't imagine Libby wanting to kill her. "Did you get close to her father? Touch him in any way?" Sophia paused, she did remember him touching her. "I shook his hand and he patted me on my shoulder." "That wouldn't work. There needs to be more of a touch to transfer this type of curse." Lewis's mum said to her husband. "She's been time lapsing. Maybe the curse just found her through time?" Lewis stated. "No that wouldn't do. In addition, how do you time laps? No one has done that for ages." Stefan asked looking at Sophia with wide eyes. He hadn't heard about time lapsing in years. Victoria told him in person that she put a lock on the book. Sophia shrugged. She didn't know how, it just happens. "I, I just do. The book, it sends me back to the same time every time, 1894. I have friends there, Elizabeth and Elijah." "That's incredible." Lewis's mum breathed. "Your grandmother put a lock on that book. No one could use it ever, until the time came when it was needed. My goodness child don't you know anything about your history?" She looked over at Lewis and he just shrugged. She thought he was being dramatic when he told them that Sophia had no idea about the family history, he wasn't kidding. "Not really." Sophia admitted shyly and looked down at the ground to hide her blush. "Lewis, why don't you start to tell her about the history of vestlers?" Stefan asked his son. Liked it or not, he didn't want to leave his son clueless about their history. He knew that he had to start training Lewis. "Sophia's parents believe that she's out to dinner with us. Therefore, we'll have some time. Margret and I need to get the mixture together to heal that arm of yours, Sophia." "Thanks, Sir." Sophia said politely to them. "Oh call me Stefan and this is my wife Margret." Stefan said and smiled.
