Chapter Five: Damon

1068 Words
Once I was sure my parents were asleep I slipped out my window and out to Talon. It isn't rare for me to sneak out and see Talon in the middle of the night. He is my best friend and I usually go and just speak with him. “You ready Tal?” I ask out loud and he nods. I climb onto Talon's back and I let him guide us to the spot in the woods that Damon and I used to meet. I enjoy the wind whipping across my face and through my hair as talon fly's. I close my eyes and will myself to see what Talon sees and when I open them I see the forest in black and while with small reds and purples from the body heat of little animals in the forest. That's one perk of being a dragon rider, better sight, smell and hearing. It isn't long until I make out the shape of a man on a horse and I wonder if it's Damon. “Talon fly lower I want to see if it's Damon.”  I say and he does as I ask. It's so nice to be able to speak to Talon in my head it's a lot easier when flying. The wind from us flying rattles the tree branches as we get closer. “It's him.”  Talon replies as he levels himself out again above the trees and we continued to our spot. Talon lands and I wait for Damon to come into the clearing. I know we were faster than him. I hear the hoof beats of Damons horse before I see him.  He comes riding into the clearing and his horse instantly rears at the sight of Talon and I laugh. I will my sight back to normal as I slide off of Talon and start making my way towards Damon. I watch as he slides off his horse and ties it to the nearest low hanging limb. When he turns to me I see him looking at Talon. “You weren't lying when you said he is huge.” He says almost laughing and I smile. Damon is the only one besides my parents who knows about Talon. “No I wasn't.” I say laughing and he walks over and hugs me and I hug him back. His strong arms are warm and I feel instantly calm. “I can't believe you're here.” He says running a hand through his hair. I smile at him. “Why wouldn't I come?” I ask. He looks down at the ground and his cheeks turn red. “Well after what Nathan had said about me being a man whore.” He said kicking the dirt and I heard Talon start laughing behind me. Damon whips towards the dragon mouth agape. “Im sorry im sorry, I try not to talk in your human tongue but that was too funny.” Talon says and continues to laugh in his gravely weird voice. “Since when the hell could he talk?” Damon turns back around to me. “Since forever. He just never speaks aloud, always up here.” I say tapping my finger on my head. Damon nods but still watches Talon.  Damon and I sat there talking about our lives and I asked the one question I didn't really want to know the answer to. “So have you found someone to make your wife yet?” I ask and look at my feet. I know Damon and I cant be together so I don't know why I feel for him as I do but I can't help it. Damon clears his throat then answers. “Well, um, no I haven't, I've been waiting, trying to save up the money for a ring before I asked the girl I want.” He replies and I nod and look down. “Well she will be very lucky.” I say and I hear Talon grumble on the other side of the clearing and I know he is trying to tell me I'm getting into tricky territory. “So have your parents picked a guy for you yet?” He asks, ringing his hands together. “No, no they haven't. I don't figure they will.” I say and stand up and start walking around. “Aria..” Damon stands up and grabs my hand. “What would you say if I said I wanted you, that i've been waiting to save my money to get YOU a ring?” He asks and I have to step back. I know that Damon and I had been close when we were younger, and I also knew I had feelings for him. But I have a mate back home, someone that has a dragon for Talon to be with also, someone the universe had picked for me. I struggled to hold back tears as I looked at Damon. “Damon I believe whoever you pick will be super lucky but I also know it can't be me. I'm not like you, I have Talon and I will be leaving in two years to go back home, back to my people. If we did anything now it would just be me leading you on, and I can't do that. I'm sorry, I do have feelings for you, its just I can't act on them.” I look down at the ground and fidget with my hands. “I know.” He whispers to me never letting go of my hand. “I just had to try, I had to see if you felt the same.” He says to me. I smile and nod with tears in my eyes.  We spent a while longer just talking and spending time together. “It's been really good catching up with you Aria, I hope that you find the life you deserve.” He says and kisses my hand. “Same for you Damon.” I say and walk over to Talon. I climb up on his back and get settled. “He's Not the one for you Ari, I know you liked him. It will be okay.” I nod and lay my head on him and we take off through the air. “I know.” I respond and relax into him as he flys us home.
