As soon as I had started my car, I looked at the gas gauge. I knew by the time I got to work, I would be at one-fourth of a tank. I smiled at the thought of how I can go get his presents this afternoon. "I'll be right back. I forgot to tell my lawyer something dealing with me getting the twins."
"Okay. Be quick though. We don't want to be late for homeroom." I groaned at that. He has been excited about us being in the same homeroom since I hardly came to homeroom when he first came to the school. I ran upstairs back to my apartment and called Mr. Roberts from the house phone.
"Hello?"
"Hi Mr. Roberts. I wanted to give you a heads up that I was going to drop Jackson off this afternoon and that I'm gonna be a little late."
"Is something wrong?"
"No. I'm just picking up Jackson's birthday gift. He will be under impression that I am getting some gas for my car." He chuckled on the other end at my new found treachery.
"Okay dear. See you this evening."
"Okay. Bye-bye." I hung up and quickly got back to the car and off we were to school. As my classical music played through my speakers, I rolled down the windows to let the wind blow through my silvery white hair. I finally found peace with my hair after a few weeks of therapy. Also because Jackson loved my regular hair instead of the inky black tar look as he described it. After homeroom, Tracy approached me in the hallway.
"Can we talk in private for a moment?" I nodded a bit confused by her sudden need to talk to me. She led me to the closest girls bathroom. We went in and was met by Penelope. I was scared. Had they found out about my after school job? I kept my breathing even. I couldn't afford to have a panic attack. I knew the Paxil was no longer in my system. I put on my stubborn face.
"What do you two want?"
"We want to know why you were hiding from us the past two days." I looked at them with false confusion on my face. But I could see the fear in my eyes in my reflection of their eyeballs.
"What are you talking about Tracy?"
"Don't play dumb Moore." Penelope never called me by my first name. "We saw you and Jackson through the window of that convenience store. We came in to see what Jackson was doing there but you both disappeared when we came in."
"In order not to look like a complete weirdo like you, we had to buy something each time. What were you two doing in that store?" The warning bell rang after she asked her question. I made my face as emotionless as I could.
"I have no idea what you two crazies are talking about. If I find out that you both are stalking me or my boyfriend, I will have you arrested by the police. If you needed to know something about our love life, that would mean you are someone of importance to us. Since you aren't, but out you jealous f***s!" Both of their jaws dropped. I took that moment to run into my home economics class. We chose that as our elective again. A lot of people who took it last year didn't want to take it again. Some of them didn't have a choice. Mostly the people who didn't do so well in it the previous year.
"So what did they want with you? Are they starting stuff?" I giggled. He looked so cute when he was being protective.
"No. They are just stalking you. They probably think they still have a chance with you now that they broke up with their boyfriends." He chuckled and let it go. At lunch, I excused myself from our table to go to the bathroom. Kendra wanted to come with me.
"It's okay Kendra. It's just the bathroom." She frowned. That stopped me from going. "What's the matter Kendra? You and Kiara have been very silent today."
"Its just that, both me and Kiara had a nightmare last night. You jumped in to save us from some lady attacking us in our own home, and you got stabbed by the knife. It was scary. We woke up our case manager screaming. Now she wants to take us to see a shrink." I went over to them and hugged them tightly. Kiara whimpered a little and Kendra just let silent tears roll down her face. I could feel them dampen my shirt.
"It'll be okay you two. I'm here now and I will protect you both and stay alive. I swear I will. You mean so much to me now that I have found you. And that is also why I'm fighting to have you placed in my care." They gazed up at me with tear stained faces. "I talked to my lawyer yesterday. She said if you two are okay with it, then she would help me to the fullest of her abilities."
"Are you for real?" I nodded. "That is amazing! I thought you wouldn't be able to do it because that would mean that you would have to disclose your secret."
"I thought about it real hard and came to the conclusion that I need to get you two out of that system. I talked to Jackson about the system for teenagers and it isn't pleasant. It is actually worse for girls. I need you two safe. I will do whatever it takes to get you two in my care." They hugged me. I smiled into their hair. "Okay. Now I really need to pee." They all giggled and let me go to pee. When I got back, the twins weren't at the table.
"They went to dump their trays." I nodded. I opened my ears to track them. I heard the sound of two people walking behind them. By the time I turned around it was too late to warn them.
