Chapter 4

Looking at my awfully alert expression, Kate only smiled. She patted David on the shoulder and laughed. “Look at that i***t! She’s even hugging a man!” I could feel William’s body tense up when Kate was silently observing him. As soon as I let go of William, Kate came over and pulled me by the ear. “Sierra, my lovely sister. Didn’t you make it clear not long ago that you wanted to be a real warrior? It’s not even a month yet, and you’re already flirting with a man.” “Let go! I said let me go, Kate!” Covering the ear that Kate was tugging on, I snarled at her. Kate did not care at all. “You’re useless, Sierra. Give yourself a break from seducing and do something that actually matters. You always longed to become a real soldier. Now, your chance has come. From tomorrow, you’ll be heading to the frontline as our first line of defense. Make yourself useful!” Laughing, she wandered off with David. I felt really uneasy hearing what Kate had said. Not knowing the reason behind this feeling, I knew better than to let down my guard. That same night, a notice came that all Omegas would no longer be required for post-battle cleanup or any logistics support. We would be directly involved in combat as the first barrier of the safety net. “What the hell? To be the very front attackers means we’ll all be killed for nothing. Is she turning us into cannon fodder?” My concern was proven by the latest news. How could Kate make such a decision? She was supposed to be the future leader of the pack, making sure that Eclipse would one day dominate the world. How could she treat the Omegas with such disregard and push them to death? Omegas were born weaker, and having them fight on the frontline would only end in tragedy. No matter how low their status may be, they were still beings who deserved their chances at living. I passed on the news to a few Omegas that I knew. They found it hard to believe. “Sierra, we’ve been taught to follow orders and obey the higher-ups. Maybe it’s not a bad thing to fight at the very front. You’ve always wanted to be a real fighter.” I was very concerned. Ordinary Omegas did not have the capacity to fight. It would not be a simple matter of getting injured if they did go. They would die. Very soon, a group of Omegas who did not want to be the sacrifice gathered at Kate’s door. “Kate. We need an explanation! We’re also part of the pack as Omegas. You can’t just give an order like that and watch us die!” “That’s right, Kate. We’re hardworking and willing to put up with dirty environments, but it’s so brutal of you to send us to the frontline!” Many Omegas started to yell and cry. Kate beheaded Gary, the Omega who was standing in the front row of the protesters. She looked at the crowd coldly, her blade still dripping with Gary’s blood. All of a sudden, everyone became quiet and was too scared to speak. “Hah, a bunch of idiots! Are you all happy now? Get lost if you don’t want to stay in the pack anymore. You don’t belong here if you don’t obey. Feel free to voice your opinion if you want to test the sharpness of my new blade!” With those words Kate, slammed the door furiously. I was standing at a distance, clenching my fists tightly as I stared at the pool of blood from Gary. He was a young man who was planning his wedding just a few days ago. His fiancée accepted his proposal, and the wedding was supposed to be next month. He had come here to complain because he wanted to live. Yet, Gary was killed by Kate before he was even sent to the frontline. He was a smart man with lots of talents. If he could survive the frontline battles, he would be an outstanding Omega. “This was all my fault …” My heart was broken and shaking uncontrollably. If I had not spread the news that Kate was sending all of us to the frontline, no one would have flocked to Kate’s place, and Gary would have still been alive. My impulsive behavior caused the death of young Gary. I was in too much pain to face the fearful looks of the other Omegas. Having learned their destiny, they were very frightened. Yet, there was nothing I could do, except for providing minimal protection to them on the battlefields where death was so close. How could I be so useless? No. Sierra. Gray spoke in my mind gently. Me: Gray? Gray: Sierra, it’s wrong to push Omegas to the front. They’re loaded with a big portion of the daily tasks. Alphas and Betas should be responsible for the security of the frontline. Don’t blame yourself for the young man’s death. That was too much for you. Me: But if I hadn’t told them the news … Gray: Even if you hadn’t, they would have still found out when they were summoned there. Me: I suppose I can only rely on myself now and make sure that they’re protected. Gray: That’s right. We can only do whatever is possible. First of all, we need to safeguard the innocent members of our pack. Sierra, I believe in you! Do you believe in me? I clenched my fists. “I will do my best. For them, and for myself.” “William. Did you get the news? The Omegas will be sent to the frontline of the war.” When I eventually found William, he was weaving an object using the tree branches. His busy fingers stopped for a second. He sounded indifferent. “Yes. So what?” “William, I want to be on the same team as you during the battle. You should know that becoming a real warrior is my dream.” I looked at William calmly. “I will spare no effort to make sure they don’t get killed.” William took a look at me. There seemed to be something in his eyes that was too complicated for me to comprehend. “It’s up to you.” He said, grabbing the oddly shaped object he weaved as he left. Nothing much happened for a few days. Perhaps the Red Moons decided to take a break and stop the war. However, we all knew that this was only the calm before the storm. One evening, the roaring shouting of the Red Moons could be heard all around us. The attack began. William and I were the first batch of Omegas to go to the frontline. I put on my armor carefully. It was something that I made myself from canes and metal scraps. Grandma had shown me how to put the materials together for a well-built armor. It was designed to protect our limbs and neck, reducing the likelihood of fatality. When I handed a full set to William, he looked at me in surprise. “What’s this?” I gave him a cheeky smile. “Were you making similar gear a few days ago when I saw you? My grandma taught me how to do it. She said it was vital to keep our necks protected. We could survive anything if our necks remained intact.” William did not speak when he took the shields from me. He kept the full set for himself and helped me to distribute the rest to the other teammates. I was a bit shy when everyone looked at me gratefully. “Look after yourselves, please! Be safe! That’s the least I could do. Make use of the gear for another layer of protection.” The ferocity of the war was beyond words. The werewolves took advantage of their sharp claws and teeth, throwing away the human tools. William and I, plus a few others behind us, stood out from the rest with our unique armor. I sprang high swiftly by a Beta and my razor-sharp claw lacerated the end of his tail. This Red Moon werewolf did not expect this and became irritated by the pain. He turned around and came at me. I squinted. Gray. Are you ready? I am, Sierra! Gray seamlessly worked with me, raising our claws at the same time. The impressive coordination we had was really rare with werewolves. With our perfect teamwork, our claws successfully dug into the eyes of our enemy. Blood splashed at my claw tips. Gray was cheering in my head. You’ve done it, Sierra. We’ve done it! Yes, we did it! I did not have time to wipe the blood off my face. After a narrow escape from the attack of another Red Moon thug, I got into another battle. A few Red Moon werewolves dropped the Omegas they were fighting against. They decided to target me together when they noticed my power and my wits. They seemed to be inching closer to me strategically. Lots of our teammates not far from us were bitten to death one by one. Blood and bodies were everywhere. “William, how far are the backup troops?” I tried to catch my breath after I bit into another enemy’s throat. William spoke, his voice heavy, “I don’t know… I think we’ve gotten too far from the others…” We both knew distance never played a part in this. It was only in Kate’s plan that we would not get assistance. She abandoned us just like I thought she would. William, me, and all of our teammates were nothing but used chess pieces she was ready to throw away anytime. My armor started to fall apart in the fierce battle. The protective equipment on my limbs was starting to break away. My eyes were blurred by the blood of my enemies and myself. William screamed when a Red Moon werewolf tore a big cut in my abdomen. With a loud thud, I was thrown against a thick tree trunk. “Ugh…” The pain of all my bones shattering was killing me. It was almost unbearable, but it did not stop me from biting into my enemy’s exposed throat with all the force I had. He should not have underestimated my power. Tasting the metallic liquid in my mouth, I almost passed out from the immense pain. However, collapsing was not an option. If I were to close my eyes and pass out, it would be over for us. We were beyond the reach of any helping hands at the central battlefield. Everyone else either had their throats cut or their hearts torn. William and I were the only survivors. I shook my head violently, trying to clear my vision. Finding another Red Moon werewolf as my target, I opened my mouth wide to reach for his throat. Unfortunately, my pounce was so weak that I only got his front leg. William was leaning against a tree for a short break. Seeing me in trouble, he rushed forward to help as he pounced at the Red Moon Beta. Together, we managed to tear him into shreds. However, at least five more werewolves were around us. William read my mind when I crouched. “Together?” He asked quickly. I mumbled in pain and threw myself at the giant black werewolf. All the other Red Moon werewolves seemed to gather around the giant black wolf, acting as his guards. Hence, the black wolf had to be special in some way. With that thought in my mind, I planned to take him down first. My guess was later proven right. As my claws found their way around the black wolf’s neck, the other Red Moon thugs started to lose their orderly formation. They stopped attacking William and me, looking panicked and anxious as they yelled. “Let go of Prince Loui!” “You mutt! Stop hurting our prince!” Prince Loui? It was a foreign name. However, his status must be prestigious if he had this title. Perhaps he was related to the Alpha leader of the Red Moons. Regardless, I did not loosen my grasp. With all the strength in my body, I bit into his neck with my sharp teeth. To assist me, William jumped onto Prince Loui’s back to stop him from moving. The huge werewolf struggled to get away, but William used his full body weight to pin him down. Very soon, his breathing became shallow. Just as I was about to fully bite through his throat, a Red Moon werewolf attacked William from behind with his talons. No. I can’t have them injuring my man. With that thought in mind, I let out a muffled scream. “William! Run!” However, William did not move, still giving his all as he held down Prince Loui. Without any hesitation, I bit through Prince Loui’s throat that was already extremely fragile. I sprang toward William with all my strength, blocking the werewolf’s attack with my exposed abdomen. As the talons dug into me, my gut felt like it was penetrated by the sharpest knife. The pain was excruciating, and my life seemed to be vanishing slowly as blood oozed out my body. Hah, I bet William now thinks I’m madly in love with him… Before I completely lost my consciousness, I laughed in my mind. At the very last moment, I managed to squeeze out a weak smile at William, trying my best to keep my eyes open. “William… go home alive… you… have to…” With that, I was devoured by the cold and darkness. When I closed my eyes, I thought I could hear Gray’s scream, and see William being encircled in golden rays of light.
