Thomas Barkley proved to be very efficient on the job. In a matter of minutes, he’d produced about six briefcases into which he packed the money in quarters of a million. He worked very quickly, taking the bundles of money as I handed them to him and running them through the counting machine. Even when the security company called him like he’d predicted, he’d handled it so professionally I felt so guilty I was putting him up to something as twisted as this.
I could easily have spoken to Mrs. Hawthorne and she’d have put my father in his place. But at what cost? She might have reconsidered her trust for me.
