People stared at me as I walked into the hallway. I guessed Riley's outfit was giving me away. I kind of liked the attention. It made me feel powerful.
I sighted Ava from a distance as I ran to meet up with her. She hasn’t been in school for days now and it bothered me. She was probably out with her boyfriend. I wasn’t sure.
"What's up with you?" I asked. “You haven't been in school, are you okay?" I asked as I stared at her.
She adjusted the sunglasses she was wearing. "I think I got the flu." She said. I didn’t believe her but she was my friend so I cared.
I gasped as I looked at her properly. “Maybe you should go to the clinic, your eyes are swollen," I replied.
"What about the presentation?" She asked and I shook my head.
"I will cover up for you and tell Beauty about it," I said as I pushed her slowly towards the nurse's office.
She waved at me as I entered the lecture room. Luckily for me, the lecturer wasn't in and the deadest part was, that people were staring.
It wasn’t a good start but I carried myself high and walked in with confidence.
I was happy I could see Chase's eyes on me. I stared at him for a few and moved my eyes away.
"You wore that for a presentation?" Beauty asked. “I don't think we will be getting an A with this type of dressing." She whispered as she teased.
"Ava got the flu. She is at the nurse's office." I said to her.
Beauty exhaled. "Could this day get any worse?" She said.
"Sorry, I had the charity thing and I couldn't go home to change so I lent a dress from a friend and this is all I could fit into," I told her even though I had to lie about Riley. She doesn’t need to know about my whereabouts. That wasn’t her business.
My concentration slipped for a moment as the lecturer asked us to present what we had done. Beauty had chosen the kind of costume Ophelia would be wearing for the play of Hamlet. She had designed it perfectly that even the lecturer and the other student approved of.
Daniel's group came out to present and my eyes were on him the whole time. I couldn't take my eyes off him. The fun and moment we had when we were in high school kept flushing back my head. I hope he remembered. It would have been easier.
"Psst. Inez." Beauty whispered as she tapped me on her shoulder.
I looked at her. "You could have just hit me normally. Any news?" I asked.
"Well, he grew up in NYC but they moved here years ago. Two years ago," She said. I thought for some minute.
That couldn't have been a coincidence. Chase died two years ago. And I heard that Daniel grew up in NYC and moved to California two years ago? Things weren’t adding up.
What if he had a twin brother? What if it was his twin that died that day? But that doesn't make sense, Chase Parker knew everything about me. Everything he could know.
Something wasn’t right. Lydia didn't tell me the whole story, I was sure of it.
The council doesn't even approve of us, to begin with. They hated us together.
The council head said that our love was Unconventional and it wouldn't work out because Chase was human and I was a Dhampir.
No matter how Chase and I fight for our love, something tragic always happens but I won't stop fighting until I get to the bottom of this.
"Inez, he also suffered from Amnesia. Doesn't remember anything or his family. The person he is staying with right now isn't even related to him by blood. But what is it to you that you are this concerned?" She asked me and I couldn’t say a word. She doesn’t need to know those details.
I couldn’t tell Beauty about my past or who Chase was or about my story not when I just realized that she is a witch and related to Lydia.
I couldn’t tell her anything.
"I'm just concerned, he doesn't look happy. I can see it, he put on an act anytime he comes to class but deep down, he is sad so I am worried." I said to her. I was concerned about Chase.
"You are right Inez, he doesn't look happy." Beauty said.
Beauty can also see through him. She is a witch after all and they were powerful beings and luckily for me, she couldn’t see a thing because I had so much power that witches don't even know I possessed, not even Theo or the hunters.
I was a hybrid with so much power, I could destroy anything or anybody who come between Chase and me and I won't hesitate to keep the council out of the way to have what I have always desired. Chase.
I heard a tap on the desk as I recovered from my daydream. "Inez, they just choose Daniel to play the role of Hamlet. Lucky you." Beauty said with excitement. I didn’t get why she was happy but f**k! I was really happy.
"Wow." Maybe the lord was really on my side. We will spend so much time together learning our lines. Alone.
I smiled shyly. Exactly how I wanted it to be. Chase and Inez are together once again after a long time of breaking apart. What was fate up to?
"See me in my office...Both of you." The lecturer pointed at me and Chase as we both looked at him.
Five minutes and we were still in Mr. Greg's office. He kept on talking about teamwork and how we should learn our lines together.
Chase invited me to his house so we could both learn our lines together.
Could my day get any luckier? I loved the idea. Chase and I alone? Maybe he will be able to remember me after we stay alone together.
"I will check my schedule and get back to you." I gave him my phone. "Your number,” I said to him. Waiting for him to give me his phone number. He stared at me.
"For?" He asked. Confused.
I narrowed my eyes at him. "To contact you so I will tell you how things are with my time," I said as I watched him put his number on my phone.
The lord was really on my side and now that I thought about it, I've never been to church. Mom once told me I will burn down once I enter but I know that I am not a vampire and I am a good dhampir who is in love with a human. I will be fine and another thought came across my mind. The girl I saw going into that building.
I had to check it out.
So much for seeking peace of mind in California.
NYC was better. At least you would have to know where your enemy was coming from, unlike this place. It was not familiar at all.
Full of surprises.
"I will text you," I said as I walked out of the office.
