Chapter 6

A big building loomed in the distance, the windows were like hundreds of unblinking eyes glaring out. Theo placed his hand on my shoulder. "We are here." I rolled my eyes and focused on the building. It wasn't there the minute I left the building the other day but it was there now. So, I wasn't dreaming? It was real? I asked myself. "This is stupid," I said. "You don't need my help," I said again to convince him if he wasn't buying that. "We do. We are hunters but right now we need a..." "Prey?" I interrupted. We no humans are always going to be prey to the hunters. It was nothing new. "Not that." He inhaled and exhaled slowly. "We just need someone with supernatural power. Someone who knows how to control the demons and you turn out to be the Queen of vampires and dhampir." He smiled. "You will handle this perfectly." "In the shadow world, not California," I replied. "The demons here are different. Different from the ones I have seen and fought in the past." "Right." He said. We strode down the meadow and walked towards the grim presence of the building. The building loomed over me, blackened windows like blind eyes. I swallowed again. I paused at the door, my hand frozen. I didn't want to face a thousand people. I wasn't ready to face a thousand people. Anxiety started to twist my tummy. Fear started to grow inside me. I couldn't help myself but feel that way. "Come on, let's go," Theo said as he tried to lead me inside. "Wait." I held him back. "I came here for a normal life," I said to him. That was all I craved for. Normal life. He looked at me. "We both know things aren't normal and never will be." He said the truth. Things with me were never going to be normal so I shouldn't dream of things like that. He pushed open the door. The creak it made set my teeth on edge. Cleaned the floor when I stepped into the doorway. The people were busy with one thing or the other as we passed them by and headed for the stairs at the far end of the lobby. I climbed the stairs slowly, it was as if I had stepped into another world. It was different. Completely. We reached the top floor and I deeply exhaled. Wanted to catch my breathing. There was nothing to be scared of until something moved at the far end of the corridor and my heart skipped a beat. What was in here? I left him and squinted into the shrouded corridor. A dark corridor. A big shape broke away from the shadows, moving towards me. I couldn't move, frozen where I stood. My heart slammed against my ribs like a pounding hammer. Painful. I fell back a step as the shape came forward. Not clear enough to see but I felt a strong aura. I could see its jawline now, his mouth and fangs like sharp daggers. Vampire? Here? The thought ran through my mind. Almost made me mad and peed myself. My weapon wasn't there with me. I left it in NYC. I thought I was going to have peace of mind here. How do I fight this thing? I couldn't transform because I didn't want to. It'd scare them if they happened to see me. I kicked the vampire in its face. It stagger back and I kicked it again. My elbow found the vampire's face but it was already moving away from me. I was standing there alone and with no weapon. I kicked the vampire on its stomach as it grunted. It grunted so loudly. He swept his arm through my head as I ducked. I aimed for its legs. It goes on one knee. This time my claws started to come out "Not now." I whispered to myself. "Not now." But it didn't listen. My body didn't listen. It wanted to kill. It was hungry for blood. He roared again as I pierced my claws into his throat and feed on it. As a hybrid, I couldn't die but my eyes would turn blue. The vampire's body drop to the ground as I exhaled and tried to clean the blood away from my body. "Her eyes are blue." I heard a small boy say. "That was amazing." Were they watching me fight the vampire the whole time? That was insane. "Shhh." A woman's voice this time. "Do not say anything." "Well done, you pass the test," Theo said as they all clapped. He walked towards me. My eyes went back to normal and my claws became normal. I was furious at what he said. "Test?" I question. I wanted to confirm. "There was a real... a vampire and you said test? What if it had killed me?" I asked. Still angry. "You can't die. Until a wooden dagger is pierced in your chest. You are similar to vampires. Mom had asked Riley and Ethan to put the vampire there. It was captured. She wanted to know if you could kill your kind and that way we could trust you if you passed the test. Luckily, you did." He smiled. "Vampire isn't my kind, I'm a dhampir and a hybrid. The Queen of all demons." I corrected. If only I could kill him, I would abut I controlled myself. "In shadow world." He corrected also. "They got it, Theo," I said as I frowned. "So you are not a normal dhampir but Queen?" A girl asked as I turned to look at her. She was also at the club the day of the freshman party, fighting with those demons. She was impressive. "That's Riley, my sister," Theo said. Introducing. "Why didn't you tell me there was a going to be a test?" I asked him. "Did they tell people before they throw a surprise birthday party for them?" He replied "But this was different," I said to him. "Something might have gone wrong," I yelled. "Now about your first mission?" He said trying to ignore but I said. Riley interrupt. "Cut her some slack. I will show her around and she can sleep in my room tonight." Her eyes sparkled mischievously. "Uh, I can't, I have school tomorrow," I replied. I didn't want to stay at the house. Just staring at it posed me off. "Oh." She sighed. "I'm disappointed. But alright." "Come on. You want to show me around didn't you?" I asked. Trying to lighten her mood again. She was full of enthusiasm. "Let's go." She walked down the stairs as I followed her. She reached a room and opened the door as we both stepped in. A tall guy with black hair was also there. I recognized him at the party that night. He was bandaging his fingers. "That's Ethan. My brother." Riley said. "So all three of you are siblings?" I asked and she nodded. "Yh, we are real siblings. Come on." She walked towards a rack of weapons. "Pick one." She said. I traced my hand on the swords as I immediately pick the one I liked. "This one is.." "Your style?" She completed. "I like it too." She continued. "You didn't choose it. It chose you." She said. "So, what are we doing next?" I asked as I saw Ethan walking toward me. "Inez Sivan heard a lot about you. you don't look like a Queen." He whispered those six words. I frowned as I folded my fingers. "You want to take on me?" I asked him. Daring him. "You," Riley said. "Ethan is the best we have then I will take Theo. Are you sure you can take him?" "Sure." I drew out my sword. "Asshole," I whispered. He drew his sword too as he aimed it at my neck but I ducked. I guessed he wanted my life. I spun the sword in an arc shape as he also ducked. I took a step back and used the same technique I used on my sister when we fought in the woods and this time I was able to take a little blood out of him. Riley clapped as Ethan refused to give up and before I knew it, I could feel a hard blow on my face. I fell to the floor as blood came out of my mouth. I spitted it out as I stood on my feet. I could see another blow approaching me and due to my good sight, I was able to catch on and used that opportunity to hit him in the chest with the back of my sword. Yes, he was down and there was blood coming out of his mouth. Immediately, I kicked him in the face so he won't stand up so easily. I didn't want to ruin his cuteness so I stopped. "You are good. You deserve to be a queen." He finally said. "Theo picked a good and reliable one." He stood up and left the fighting room. I dropped the sword as I took my seat. "Can I get a mirror?" I asked Riley but she gave me her phone instead. "Wow," I said. "You don't use the iPhone series? This is the latest, iPhone 13. I got it last week." "I meant my face. It's red. What will I tell my friends?" I said. As I checked the time on her phone. I left mine at the dorm." I paused. "10:30 pm?" I gasped. "I've got to go," I said. "But you haven't seen the place finish." She said as she stood up. "Probably next time," I said to her as I placed the sword back in its position. "I've got to go," I said again. Making it clear it was time to leave.
