01| Royal Obligation
....The course of love never did run smooth- Willaim Shakespeare... Edward sat along his long mahogany desk, his head tipped down so his hair fell into his face, abscuring his view of the office. Fatigue and boredom washed upon him and a groan filled the quite space of the room. Royalty had its ups and down, this is clearly another disadvantage to it. He looked over the peace treatries on his desk, an invitation by a Governor and the numerous other invitations from Dukes and Duchesses alike for him to attend parties they were hosting; all Dubois plots to get him to marry one of their daughters. That was the second part of royalty Edward hated the most, the arranged marriages, the young woman who always worked to catch his attention at parties. What had ever happened to finding true love? Not that he was at all interested in such, what he wanted was to escape the mediocrity of royal society, a break from his predictable schedule. He needed a little adventure in his life. His phone buzzed to life in his pocket, he pulled it out and glanced at the screen. Mother. The young prince rose from his seat, a frown knitting his brows as he quickly fixed the crowd on his head, feeling that his mother could sense he was not dressed immaculately like she always desired and scold him like usual. The last thing he wanted was a scolding, and especially given his mother was at her last straw of patience with him. Lately she had been adamant in hinting that he needed a partner, she was getting too old and that life wasn't going to wait for him. "Mother," He greeted curtly, walking to a shelf filled with his books. He ran his fingers along the spines of his collection of literary greats, he had them all from William Shakespeare to Charles Dickens and far beyond that, his collection was worth millions, one of the few things he was very proud to have obtained. "Edward," Came his mother's strict and authoritarian voice, though with him he could always hear the softness that she allowed to seep through. The Queen was a woman of high society, his mother was the pure image of what royalty looked like or at least what it needed to look like as she always said. He respected her greatly, even when at times she angered him. "You have guests son's, the Duchess of Cornwell Jenifer and her brother George have come to see you. We are having tea in the garden, please do join us," The call cut and the prince felt his head pound slightly. Out of all the young woman who plotted his downfall by marriage Jenifer was the worst. They had been friends once, he quite remembered playing with her in his room each time her family visited. Unbeknown to him at the time their two families saw that as a clear sign they were meant to be together. It was not. She had grown to be an insufferable brat and her brother was a dickhead. Edward fixed his jacket as he walked down the palace halls to go join his mother for what he assumed would be a terrible lunch. He stopped outside by a column, his eyes casted over the garden and they found his best friend, he felt his lips twitching in amusement as his eyes landed on his best friend. The Duke stood outside by a bench, one foot hosted on the table and his arms making ecagerrated gun noises, a few maidens sat around him watching and listening in awe as he told them stories of his many adventures. Adventures that Leonardo had never had. One of the girls noticed the prince looking on in amusement and with her face red she whispered to her friend, soon they all shifted their attention from Leonardo as they looked at the Prince. Those brave enough waved at him and he smiled, waving back. The young Duke noticed this, and rolled his eyes, detaching himself from the girls as he approached his friend. The prince straightened up from leaning on the column and motioned with his head that Leonardo follow him. "You just ruined my story," Leonardo complained, falling in line with the Prince as they walked to a different part of the garden. "I am deeply sorry for that," The prince felt no such emotion. "Where are we going anyway? I saw your bride to be with your mother and brother-in-law," The Duke sniggered as his friend scoffed at his words. "I would rather hang myself Leonardo, when I think of that woman I swear the thought of dying alone is more bearable," He shook his head in disgust, his crown nearly falling off his head. He steadied it as he could now see his mother, the bright blonde hair of the queen caught the sun's rays and the crown on her head deflected them in different directions. "I have no idea why your dragging me into this, you know I hate the woman. Truly I don't know why you don't just tell her you don't like her and be done with it." Leonardo spoke as if the idea had never crossed the Prince's mind. It had, numerous times but each time he could just see his mother hanging him for being rude to a duchess. So on most occasions such as this he bit down his tongue and put all his years of proper training in etiquette to the challenge. "You are here because you are my very best friend and my third in command when I take over as king Leonardo," The prince stated smugly. Queickly adding as they reached the queen, "So smile and greet George." "Mother," Edward placed on a fake smile as he approached his mother, the queen gave him a stern look as he placed a soft kiss on her cheek. "You took your time, where were you?" "My office," He answered curtly, already aware he'd be asked for his previous location. His mother was very controlling, but after years with the woman he knew how to get his space when he needed it. "Hard away at work my prince," Jenifer butted in, the Prince's mask of gentility nearly crumbled as he faced her. Jenifer was quite a beautiful young woman, soft hazel eyes, high cheekbones, a petite waist and a reasonable chest. She had many suitors fighting for her hand but unfortunately she had her eyes set on the Edward. Though unfortunately for her the Prince wants at all interested, truly he felt like the only man who wasn't bewitched by the Duchesses beauty. All he was was her arrogance, impatience, selfishness and manipulative nature, all things he hated. The prince looked her straight in the eyes, allowing his lips to tilt up in a small smile. "Yes," He bowed slightly in greeting, "How are you Duchess?" "Fine now that you are here Edward, you sure know how to keep a woman waiting," she smiled, but he could see the flaire of annoyance in her eyes. How the duchess hated to be ignored. Which was something he quite liked doing. On rare occasions he could stir her up so much by ignoring her she'd actually show her true horrible colours, those were the times he enjoyed. "I'm sure he was busy with something else sister, the prince is a busy man," George muttered, a hollow laugh to his words as he and Edward shook hands. A moment passed between both man as their grips tightened before loosening up. Edward curled his fingers in a fist once they separated, smiling tight lipped as he said, provocatively, "It's good to see you again George, glad to see your leg is all better." The last time the two had been face to face a horse racing match had come to Okay, the prince;being a skilled rider won the race easily and George in anger had kicked his horse a little too hard. It bucked him off and had him off his feet for two months. George's nose flared, his face Redding in anger. "Yes in fact it's so good I think we'll be having our rematch soon," Jennifer butted in before Edward could say anything else. "Don't be a sore loser besides we didn't come here for that.," Jenifer grinned, abruptly latching onto his arm as she smiled at him. A blush tainted her cheeks making her look so innocent that for a second Edward nearly forgot she was just as wicked as medusa. "I wanted to invite you to my house Edward, next month I will be crowned duchess and it would make me very happy if you would be there. It might even mean a next step in our relationship," From behind Jenifer, Leonardo made a face of a man gagging. Edward swallowed his chuckle but the thought of being stuck with Jenifer and her brother in their home made him nauseous. The woman was deceitful and Edward knew he wouldn't be able to get out of that house without her being crowned his princess. "That would be a good thing don't you think so Edward? You don't have anything to do or anywhere to be. I approve," The queen spoke, giving her son a stern smile. His mother had clearly been serious with her threats and she was giving him off to the wolves. He could not handle any of this. He needed to think, marriage was completely out of the question for him. His smile slipped from his face as the two women looked at him expectantly. George looked on with a smug smile on his face and Leonard's had paled. He needed a way out of this. His mind worked hard till the idea just dropped into his head. "I would love to Duchess," Jenifer's eyes widened in excitement. "But unfortunately this month I have a little trip I must go on. Leonardo and I are attending an invitation by a grand governor to make diplomatic connections in..." He thought of the address on the governor's invitation. He needed one last piece to weave his lie, he had it. "Chicago." __ Welcome to the world of scandalous Royals, heart throbbing Prince Charmings, with a hint of badboy in them and a young ignorant waitress.
