Chapter 1
“Run!” Screamed mum. I was terrified and shivering. There were kids running in every direction. “Max!” I heard my brother Lukas yell. Lukas grabbed my arm as I heard a BANG! I couldn’t help but cry. My eyes went blurry and I tripped on my leg. Lukas picked me up and I felt a sharp pain strike through my leg. I shrieked and Lukas shushed me. “Get on my back!” He whisper shouted at me. I carefully got on his back and soon drifted off to sleep as he ran for our lives. I woke up to Lukas sitting next to a fire. I sat up and groaned, ugh my leg was killing me. Lukas whipped his head around and stood up to help me. “You’ll need to rest your leg before we continue to San Juan City.” He whispered to me. I saw the fright in his eyes and I could feel how scared he was to be without mum or dad. Before I could respond, there was a rustle in he trees. Before I could scream, Lukas covered my mouth. I was frozen. What if it was a soldier coming to kill us? The person came out from the dark. The firelight hit their face. It was girl. She was in jeans and a striped shirt. You could tell she had been crying and she had dirt on her face.
