Amanda POV
I was really puzzled about why he was becoming more bad-mannered toward me with every minute that went by.
The truth is, I had never done anything that deserved him treating me this way. The only thing I had done was to love him like there was no tomorrow.
“Please, just tell me where my baby girl is, and I promise I will never come after you again,” I pleaded, hoping he would feel even a single moment of pity for me. I wanted to meet my Sam—that was the only thing that mattered at this time.
What he replied with was more than I expected. He laughed loudly, a kind of laughter that felt relaxed and carefree, without a hint of worry.
At the time, the woman was next to him, still holding that baby. Every time I looked at that child, I only thought of my own baby.
She, once again like before, shot me death glares as she interlinked her fingers with my husband’s.
“Babe, what the hell is wrong with this s**t? I thought we had finally gotten rid of her forever. Why is she here?” she asked.
“That is exactly what I thought. I thought we had finally gotten rid of her, which would make our lives better,” my own husband, whom I had lived with for some years, replied disgustedly a man whose love I had never questioned all those years because he had never done anything to make me doubt it.
He had acted as the best husband, the best daddy, and above all, a best friend. He was everything I could have wanted. He acted as both father and mother in ways I never got the chance to experience.
All my life revolved around him, and I felt that in him I had everything I had ever dreamed of. Now, with everything turned upside down, I wondered what would happen to me.
“Justin, what is really wrong with you? This is not you at all. In the past, you never let me go through any suffering like this. In fact, you were always there for me,” I lamented, tears streaming down my face.
The two just looked at me as though they were watching a very interesting movie. The fiancée gripped his hand and dragged him away, saying,
“We have seen enough of her. We have to get going.
Don’t forget, we have to organize the wedding.” She said this as they moved toward their expensive car waiting nearby.
I was not going to let them go. I had to find out about my girl. An idea flashed through my mind,I got a cab that was passing by and instructed the driver to follow the car. I knew I had no money to pay him, but I had no choice.
At this moment, the most important thing was to go after them. The driver followed my instructions, and soon we were parked not far from a place I knew well—next to the house where I had lived the best years of my life with Justin.
Though we had been in poverty back then, we were so happy together. I believed he loved me as much as I loved him or at least, that was how I believed based on how he treated me. He used to trick me with many things until the idea of me going abroad to work came about.
Damn it! I didn’t even want to think about that now. The only thing that mattered was my daughter.
I watched as the two got out of the car and entered the house. But something puzzled me-how, with all the money I had sent, was he still living in this house? Though we had been in love all that time, I knew he had never liked the house.
He used to complain about it endlessly, yet to me, it was a house I never wanted to leave. It held all the best memories I could never forget. I had lived there with the man who was my husband and my best friend.
It was even the same place where my baby had been home. I suddenly began to smile, though tears ran down my face at the same time. I couldn’t possibly forget any of those times, with all those sweet memories.
“Are you okay?” the cab driver asked, concerned, noticing I was crying and smiling at the same time.
“Oh yes, you don’t have to worry about me. I am completely okay,” I lied. That was what I had to do. I was not going to tell everyone the life I was living now.
“Okay,” he said, not insisting on asking more questions, and I appreciated that.
We spent the next ten minutes in complete silence. My eyes were aimed outside as the two got out of the car and headed inside. At that time, I wondered whether to get to the door and spy on them, but I also thought about how they might react if they found me there again.
But this was my house, and I believed I had power over it. I counseled myself, and that gave me the courage to act. I got out of the car and moved toward the door. I did not hesitate at all. I immediately started banging on it while shouting as loud as I could:
“Come out! I want my baby!”
“You are such a coward who thinks only about sleeping with the next woman the moment your wife goes away!”
“Get out!”
I swear, if there had been neighbors close by, they would have gathered to watch. The advantage was that the nearest neighbors were far away, so I had no audience.
Just then, the door opened, revealing Justin. He looked angrier than I had ever seen him in all the time I had known him.
“What the hell are you doing here, w***e? How dare you come and start shouting? There’s nothing of yours here, and I don’t think you’ll like it if I get really angry,” he threatened.
I was not going to give up, no matter what.
“Just give me my baby and get out of my house. I don’t care if you marry her or not.”
He replied with loud laughter, like before. Laughing was something he loved.
“What are you talking about?” he asked, a smile on his lips as he looked at me. He came closer, took my chain in his hand, and lifted my head, our eyes meeting.
In his eyes, I saw someone I had never seen before. His gaze contained so much that I could not put a name to it.
“I think you need to find out everything so that you stop following us like a stray dog hoping for a caretaker.”
“Sam was taken away and adopted. I don’t even know where she was taken. It was only two months after you left. I told them you had abandoned the baby, and yet I could not care for her myself.”
I listened to the heartlessness of the man I had thought I knew, only to discover that he had always aimed to hurt me.
“Leave me alone!” I yelled, pulling away from him. I held my head in my hands as it felt like it was spinning again.
“Please, can you just tell me where the people who adopted my baby are?” I pleaded.
“I told you, I don’t know. They were foreigners, and they went back to their country. Now that you know everything you wanted, you have to leave. I don’t think my baby mama will like it when she sees you here.”
With that, he went back inside, leaving me there all alone.
