CH.6 Rose

I was swimming in the cold darkness. Once in a while I would feel as though I wasn’t alone. My body would fill with warmth. Then there was a light cutting through the darkness. Then I could hear the sound I am all to familiare with. The beeping from my heart monitor grew louder. I slowly cracked open my eyes. The lights were dimmed but I didn’t need to see to know where I was. I was in Doc’s basement. Him and Lulu had converted it into somewhat of a hospital for me. The room was small, just enough room for a bed, a small table, and the monitors. I knew before I even looked to the left of me was Doc. There he stood in his white coat. His gray hair slicked back as his brown eyes held sternness. I knew I was in for a lecture. “Don’t even try to speak.” He ordered before I could even open my mouth. He filled a straw with water. Holding his wrinkled finger over the top to keep it from spilling out. I opened my mouth wide enough for him to set the stray in. Once my lips were around it he let the water go. “You have another three broken ribs, but those are not our main concern. They used a silver chain soaked in wolfs bane to choke you.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. The thing he did when he was stressed. “I can’t be too sure how much damage it has done to your vocal cords. So you are not to speak for at least a few more hours. Your body healed quicker than normal at first. Then it slowed down.” Just then the door to my little room busted open.  Jack came in and rushed to my right side. I barely saw him. He was a blur when he came in. Now I could take him in. His hair was a mess sticking out all over. His clothes were slightly wrinkled. He smelled fresh with a hint of sweat. Worry and relief showing bright on his face. Doc bowed his head in acknowledgment to the next Alpha. It was as if Jack hadn’t seen Doc standing there. All his focus was on me. “How is she? Sorry I wasn’t here sooner, I overslept.” He explained scratching the back of his neck. I didn’t miss the way it seemed as if he was mad. Mad at me? Mad at himself? I wasn’t sure. “It’s okay son, you needed the rest. I know those chairs are not comfortable.” I gave Doc a questioning look. Seeing my confusion Doc explained to me. “He has been here the whole time. Lulu had to bring him food because he refused to leave your side. I had finally convinced him to go home to rest and take a shower.” How long was I out for? Looking at Jack I could see the dark bags under his eyes. He looks as if he hasn’t slept in days.  I open my mouth to speak, but Doc holds his hand up. “No talking” he reprimands me. Giving me a notepad and a pen, he instructs me. “Write what you want to say.” I rolled my eyes before writing out my questions.  How long was I out?  Doc sighs “I put you in a small coma for three days.” If my eyes could they would have popped out of my head. I have been out for three days! Angrily I scribbled out. That’s not what we agreed on. “No it’s not, but there was a lot of damage. If Jack hadn’t gotten you here when he did. You may not have made it.”  “What agreement?” Jack asked looking confusingly between Doc and I.  “Rose and I agreed when she started working. If I had to put her under that I would only do it for a day.” Jack nodded in understanding. Slowly his hand curled around my fingers. The touch was so soft. Like he thought I was made of glass that would break under his grip. “Well I will be back down to check you over.” Doc looked to Jack. “Link me when she is resting.” Jack nodded, not taking his eyes off me. Doc patted me on the head then turned and left. As soon as the door clicked shut I looked back to Jack. I could see the hurt in his eyes. “I’m so sorry Rose. I’m sorry I couldn’t get there sooner. I knew something was wrong. I went to your classroom, but you weren’t there. I had Ryan, Charlie, and guards looking for you. It wasn’t until I heard you scream.” He cringed and I knew he was hearing my scream all over again. I wanted to hold him. Tell him that I am okay, but I didn’t move. I couldn’t, I am not used to this. Someone other than Lulu and Doc visibly hurting over what happened to me. I’m not used to seeing others care about me the way he is showing me right now.  “They are in the dungeons awaiting trial.” He tells me “Tell me every person who laid a hand on you. They will do the same.” This was a promise, but I couldn’t do that. There is no evidence from all the attacks. To many names, to many faces. Looking at me for the first time since he apologized. There in his eyes I could see the unshed tears. I looked down at my lap. I didn’t know how to respond. Here standing before me is my next Alpha. The one the rest of the pack knows to be strong. No one has ever seen him lose control. Seen him scream in anger or cry from sadness. But here is that same man that everyone looks to for strength. Looking at me as if I am everything. As if he would move heaven and hell to get me what I want.  I wasn’t sure what I was going to say. I just started writing. Jack you don’t need to apologize, you saved me. If I told you those names you wouldn’t have a pack to rule. We would be cut in half maybe more. His eyes went wide when he read the last part. Flashing an electric blue as his wolf peeked out. Jack spun around and punched the concrete wall. Causing some chalk like dust to fall. When he pulled back there was an indent in the wall. I jumped from the sudden action, but I didn’t feel fear of Jack. Instead I felt the urge to calm him. To rid his mind of all that anger. Thankfully the room isn’t that big. I was able to reach Jack’s hand without stretching very much. His grip was firmer on my hand then earlier, but he still didn’t turn back to me. With my free hand I wrote. Jack please calm down. I’m okay, I’m going to be okay. I need you to calm down.  I tugged on his hand to get him to turn around. When he finally did and read my note he collapsed into the chair. Laying his head on my lap. “I almost lost you. I just found you, I can’t lose you not now, not ever. I can’t wait for the day you can feel the bond to.” I played with his dark blond hair as he lays in my lap. Trying to sooth away all the hurt and self blame. He sighs in contentment nuzzling my legs. “I am never letting you out of my sight.” It was a vow to the both of us. With his head in my lap, my fingers running through his hair I felt safe. As if his presence would keep the monsters away. We stayed like that for a bit longer until Jack sat up. Looking at me with a ghost of a smile. “You should get some rest. I’ll be here when you wake up.” He kissed the top of my head. I nodded in agreement feeling very tired all of a sudden. Jack sat in the chair next to my bed holding my hand. I finally fell asleep to the soft sensation. Jack was causing from the small circles he was drawing on my hand.
