CH.3 Rose

For the rest of my shift I kept thinking about Jack and the note. What guy ever writes like that, and means it? Let alone a soon to be Alpha. He isn’t even Alpha yet, but he is almost there. He has already earned the respect of the pack. He has fought mercilessly in many battles. When a pack member steps out of line in his presence. He wastes no time in reminding them of their place. He already holds the same reputation as his father. A fare, hard, marcellus Alpha. Still I find myself carefully folding the note, and putting it in my pocket.  The night finished without a hitch and I was glad. I was grabbing my things, getting ready to leave when he walked in. Jack didn’t look the slightest bit surprised that I was getting ready to leave an hour before I told him I got done. “You ready to go baby?”  Pushing past my surprise I stuttered out. “I..I told you I wasn’t done until eight.” Jack chuckled at my reaction.  “I figured you lied so I double checked with your friend Sam. She told me that you actually got done at seven.” I looked back at Sam, who was standing behind the counter smiling. That was until she noticed my glare and hurried to clean a table.  I turned back to Jack when he put a hand on my lower back. “Don’t be mad at her, I didn’t really give her a choice.” He tried to take the blame all on his own.  I glanced back at Sam who was still smiling. “Oh yeah I’m sure she put up one hell of a fight.”  Jack turned us to the door and asked “Shall we get going?” Reluctantly I let him walk me out the door and to his car.  I have seen his car a thousand times from a distance. Now I was up close, inside even, I was amazed. It is a black dodge charger. Not the newer ones. No this one was older, one of the classics. The interior was redone to the original design. “Okay stop it, you are making me jealous of my own car.” I looked at him confused. What is he talking about? “We have been driving for ten minutes. You have touched and committed every detail of this car to memory. Not once have you even glanced at me.” He pouted as he drove on a back road. He was right looking out the window. I had no clue where we were. I started to panic. This was the end of the joke. He was going to take me to the rest of them. This was the perfect place to kill me. We were in the middle of nowhere. Nobody would interrupt them while they finished what they started. Would anyone even notice I was gone? My parents? I was surprised that they remembered they had a daughter as it was. Sure they wouldn’t notice if suddenly they stopped seeing me all together. Everyone else would probably think that I finally had run away. I had nobody to miss me. My mind flashed to her. I knew i should have taken her and ran a long time ago. The car came to a stop at the edge of a field. Jack put the car in park and turned it off as a tear slipped down my cheek. “Hey, hey I was just joking about the jealousy thing. Baby please don’t cry.” I couldn’t look at him. Keeping up the act to the very end.  “Promise me something.” I whispered, keeping my head down.  “What? Rose what are you talking about?” His voice changed. Before it was soft, now it was hard with concern. It hurt to hear when I knew it was all an act.  “When you hand me over to them. Please tell them to make it quick. I have had enough pain for this lifetime.” Now I looked at him. I watched as his face morphed from confused to realization, to shock, to anger. Coming to rest on a hurt passion.  Cupping my face softly he looked into my eyes. Oh Rose, my beautiful Rose. This is not some cruel joke. I am not a joke. The way I feel about you is not a joke. A part of me is hurt that you think so little of me, but I understand. You do not trust easily, but I’m asking you to trust me right now.” He waited for me to answer. I thought about what he said. Looking into his eyes something told me that I could trust him.  With a shaky voice I said “I trust you.”  Jack withdrew his hands with a smile. “Well I wanted this to be a surprise, but to make you comfortable I’ll tell you.” Jack said reaching into the back seat. He pulled out a blanket and a basket. “If I would have known being with me alone I would have planned something around more people. I was being selfish. I brought you out here so that I could get to know you with no distractions.” He explained his face falling towards the end. I felt bad for the way I acted. I was completely off about his intentions. “This was stupid. I will take you back to town. Maybe we could walk down main street or I could just drop you off at home if you want.” Jack said and went to place the items back in the back seat.  “No please,” I said, placing a hand on the basket. “I’m just not used to people actually being nice to me. So I’m going to take a leap of faith and trust you.” His smile came back even bigger if that was possible.  “My arms are wide open to catch you.” He said winking at me before getting out of the car. I moved to follow, but Jack held up his hand. I sat there watching him come around the car. He opened the door and held out his hand.I hesitantly placed my hand in his.  Even after I was out of the car Jack never let go of my hand. His large one swallowing mine. It was so warm and felt comforting. We walked in the field a little ways until we were on top of a small hill. We had about two hours of sunlight left and I could tell that you could see some awesome sunsets from here. Releasing my hand he spread out the blanket. Jack waited until I was settled on the blanket before he sat next to me. He was too close and I was starting to feel uneasy. I tried to be stealthy as I put more distance between us, but I was unsuccessful. I could tell he noticed when I saw his face frown a bit and he scooted to the far edge of the blanket. I tried to find something to break the ice when I saw the basket. Looking at it I felt bad because I knew whatever was in there. I wouldn’t be able to take more than two bites. If I dared to try to eat any more than that I would run the risk of ruining tonight. By having Jack watch as I puke my empty guts out. “So what did you pack?”  This seemed to catch his attention. His head swiftly turned to me. Looking at the basket he gave a small smile. I remember people always saying that he rarely smiled. That meant he was going to be a great strong Alpha. Today it seemed like he was always smiling. “Well I remembered that you said you couldn’t keep heavy things down. So I have a protein shake for us to share. Then I got some fruit and veggies with dip, and if we are feeling bold I got some summer sausage and cheese.” Jack explained taking out the things as he named them off. I was surprised that he remembered what I told him. People were always so quick to forget me. I have never had a protein shake before but it sounded good.  “What’s that?” I asked, peaking in the basket. I pointed out the mason jar that looked like it was filled with pieces of paper. Jack seemed bashful as he took out the jar.  “Well to be honest I have never really dated before. I read online that first dates could be awkward so I found this idea. We each take turns drawing a question from the jar and whatever the questing the other person has to answer honestly.” He explained closing the basket and setting it off to the side.
