Between the food and the game. I could tell that Jack put a lot of thought into tonight. But I was hung on that he never went on a date before. “What?” Jack asked once he looked back at me.
“You've never been on a date?”
He gave me a shrug before saying “I never saw the point. One day I was going to find my mate. If I was dating someone and she wasn’t my mate it could get complicated.” Jack’s reasoning made sense. If only more wolves would think like that. “So where should we start?” Jack asked surveying everything spread over the blanket.
“Well I have never had a protein shake before.”
Jack’s eyes grew wide. He reached into the basket and pulled out two straws. “Really! They are my all time favorite drinks, but I try to limit myself on them. Too much at once could become harmful.” He explained pulling off the lid and poking the straws into the shake. He held the bottle out to me. “Take a sip and see how you like it. Just be careful they can be filling”
I took the container from him and sipped. I could tell that it was supposed to be strawberry and banana. The protein set it off a bit but it was still good. Handing it back to him I told him “It’s not bad.” Then I focused back on the jar. “So do you want to draw first?”
“Please Princess start us off.”
We sat on the hill well past sunset. Jack used the flashlight on his phone so that we could still see. It wasn’t until his phone was about to die that we decided that we should head home. The ride back to the pack homes was peaceful. I actually had fun tonight. To be honest I didn’t want it to end.
I gave directions to my house. Pulling into the driveway Jack looked around. Everything was dark and quiet like it usually is. Living on the edge of the pack has its advantages. Not as many people hang around here. Therefore there isn’t a whole lot of noise. My house was one of the few furthest ones. We were right on the tree line to the rest of our territory. “Are your parents home?” He asked, even though he tried I could still hear the worry in his voice.
“Probably not and if they are they are sound asleep by now.” I told him as I got ready to get out of the car. Jack looked around us searching for any threat that may be hiding.
“If they aren’t home you think you will be okay alone?” His eyes never left our surroundings.
I found the way he was acting quiet funny. I tried to stop the giggle that slipped past my lips. “It’s okay, i’m used to being alone. Plus the Doc’s house is right over there.” I said pointing to the pack doctor’s house a few yards away. Doc is one of the oldest doctors in the pack. At times he has been more like a father to me.
“Okay but I’m still walking you to the door.” Jack said getting out of the car. He eyed me as he rounded the car. When we were sitting on the hill we talked about chivalry. We both agreed that it was a good thing. I made sure to point out that women can do those things on her own, and that for a man. He shouldn’t start feeling like he owns the woman just because she lets him hold a door for her.
Jack opened my door and helped me out. Holding my hand gently he walked me to my door. When we got to the door we just stood there. Neither of us made a move to say goodbye. I didn’t want tonight to end. It has been so perfect that I must be dreaming. Tomorrow I’m going to wake up and this would all be a bitter sweet dream. “What are you thinking about beautiful?” Jack whispered, looking down at me like he would magically be able to read my mind. Being around him I don’t feel the need to hide.
So I told him the truth “I don’t want this night to end. I don’t want to wake up and all this be a dream.” No matter how hard I fought to keep my guards up. Jack was breaking through them.
“Oh, my delicate flower” he whispered, pushing a strand of hair behind my ear. “I can’t wait for the day you feel the bond to.” His large hand cupped my small face perfectly. “I promise you this is not a dream. Goddess I want to kiss you so bad.” His last statement made my heart spike. Kiss me? I have never kissed someone. Well not willingly. “But I won't. Not until I know that you are ready. That you trust me with your heart.” He told me brushing his thumb over my cheek. “Go inside and get some sleep. I will see you at school tomorrow, and I’m not leaving until I hear that door lock behind you.” I rolled my eyes at him as I moved for the door.
“Alpha I will be fine. Go home and get some sleep. Don’t worry about little old me.” Jack growled and stepped closer. Out of instinct I whimpered and sunk back with my eyes lasered to the ground. I heard him gasp and even though I couldn’t see him. I felt him step back.
“Rose I’m so sorry. My wolf got excited when you called us Alpha. We never meant to scare you. Please just Jack, just call me Jack. No more titles, not between us. You are my mate, my future Luna, my life. Please don’t be afraid of us.” I could hear the panic in his voice. I heard him taking deep breaths as I felt his words sooth over me. I don’t know how. I have never been one to take comfort in words, but his did. I started to relax again. “Baby please look at me.” There was hurt in his voice. Now that I was calm I knew that I over reacted. Something inside me told me that Jack would never hurt me. Slowly, cautiously I raised my eyes from the ground. Now I stood there look straight into Jack’s eyes. I could see how much pain he was in from scarring me. I could see the worry he held. Worried of what? That I would run away and never want to be near him. Worried that I will break down in tears at any minute. What was it? I’m not used to seeing those emotions when people look at me.
Only two people ever look at me like that, Doc and his wife Lulu. As I stood there I saw how the longer I held his gaze the more relaxed he became. “Please go inside, lock the door, and go to sleep. I will see you at school in the morning.” I nod before I opened the door. Before I shut it I looked at Jack. He was standing there watching me. Waiting for the door to close and separate us.
“Goodnight Jack.” For some reason it felt like more of a good bye. I didn’t like the way it felt.
Jack gave me a lopsided grin that didn’t reach his eyes. Did he feel the same way I do? “Goodnight my Rose.”
