Luna POV:
As soon as we pulled onto Second Street Luca had turned to me and asked where I was going, after telling him the school he just nodded his head and started singing along to the song on the radio. With the way Luca drove we reached the schools parking lot in just a few minutes and there was our little red Honda sitting exactly where Celeste had parked it this morning.
When Luca parked I jumped to the pavement and slammed the door shut behind me.
“Why didn’t Orion or Celeste or even your mother bring you to pick up the car?” Luca asked as his boots hit the pavement and he made his way towards the car with with me.
“They didn’t know I came to get it.” I answered with a shrug. Pulling on the drivers handle I was thrilled to know I was right and that Celeste hadn’t locked the doors, like normal. Pulling down the sun visor I lifted the little mirror open and the spare key fell in my lap, I started keeping one here after Celeste and Orion lost the car keys multiple times. They didn’t know it, but I had about twenty spare keys in the bedside table drawer in my room.
“You mean to tell me you left your house and started walking down the highway with out telling anyone you were leaving or where you were going? What if something had happened to you?” He sounded like a pissed off dad and I knew if I kept rolling my eyes at the way he was acting they were going to get stuck up there.
“I’m use to doing things my self Luca, if you have conveniently forgot already, half the town has never given me a second thought much less bothered me when I was out and about. No one cares where I go.” This fact didn’t bother me, at least not anymore. Though it was frustrating that all of a sudden I mattered because I had some pre ordained ‘mate’. Like just because I was destined to be with someone they deemed important I was all of a sudden worthy of their attention and concern.
When I stepped out of the car and slipped the spare key into my pocket my eyes met Luca’s and I could tell he felt uncomfortable. Half of me wanted to smile and tell him it was okay, water under the bridge. But a bigger part of me was glad that he realized how wrong they had all treated me over the years. That second part won out as I turned away from Luca’s sad brown eyes and walked purposefully towards the school. I had dropped my backpack in the cafeteria when I freaked out over hearing Ellie for the first time, it would either be there or in the office at the lost and found.
I was relieved to find the schools front doors still unlocked and as I pulled it open it was pulled from my grasp and held open. I glanced back at Luca with a raised eyebrow, I hadn’t even heard him following me but I guess I should have known he would. He had promised to stay with me till Vespian was here. I ignored the little jump in my hearts rhythm at the idea of Vespian being here any second, and focused on Luca.
“How is someone as big as you are so quite? Are you a ninja as well as a…” I made a show of looking around with wide eyes before saying in a stage whisper “werewolf?”
Luca’s face broke out into a wide grin as he chuckled and followed me into the schools empty hallway, letting the door swing shut and click behind us. “No, I’m quite because I’m a werewolf.”
I looked over at him curiously as he walked beside me. “How does being that make you quite and sneaky?”
“Well or wolf gives us heightened senses, we can hear almost anything so our body adjusts naturally to keep us quite even to our own ears.” Luca winced slightly and shrugged his shoulders “Honestly, I have no idea how it works, but we are quieter then your average human is all I know.”
Letting the subject drop we walked in silence to the end of the hallway and Luca stepped up to open the door and hold it open for me to step into the cafeteria. “Thanks” I muttered. This kind of behavior was still super weird to me and I honestly have no idea how to respond to it. Glancing around the cafeteria I didn’t see my back pack anywhere and turned back to leave, once again Luca opened the door and held it for me as I walked through. Super weird.
Again the door was opened and held open for me to walk through when we entered the office. A few school staff were still there and as we walked in the teachers and office workers stopped talking and turned to look at us. I figured they were just curious as to who had entered the office but the looks I got were mixtures of amazement and curiosity.
“Umm, hi.” My voice sounded low and shy so I cleared my throat before speaking again a little louder. “I left my backpack in the cafeteria earlier this afternoon, I didn’t see it there so thought maybe someone brought it to the lost and found?”
The school principle stepped forward with a friendly smile on her face. Ms. Bailey was young for a principle and exceedingly attractive with long blonde waves she always kept pulled back in a high pony tail and startlingly silver eyes that always seemed to swirl like molten silver. Her stiletto heels clicked on the faux wood floor as she walked around the counter, and the still gawking teachers, her white blouse was tucked into a high waisted beautiful silver skirt that had black butterflies embroidered around the bottom hem, a hem that swirled around her knees as she walked. The clicking stilettos were a pure white that matched her blouse and made me curious as to how she kept them clean all day.
“Luna, I’m glad to see you are feeling well after your abrupt departure earlier today. I hope your brother and sister are well as well?” As always Ms Bailey’s soft musical voice calmed my anxious nerves right away. That voice was a gift in and of it’s self, no matter what was going on or how loud a crowd was her voice could cut through anything and bring order. Her silver eyes moved to Luca and she bowed her head slightly, as if in respect. “Luca, what a pleasant surprise to see you here with Luna. Keeping a close eye on her I see?”
Luca smiled back at Ms Bailey, but when I looked over at him his eyes looked hard. “Yes ma’am, what kind of friend would I be if I let my buddies little sister wonder around alone.”
At that I had to keep my eyes from rolling back into my head. He was laying it on awfully thick. As I looked between our principle and Luca I couldn’t help but feel as if there was tension there. I coughed into my hand, trying to get their attention off of each other. Ms Bailey looked over at me at once with that same friendly smile, while I noticed Luca’s eyes never left Ms Bailey.
“Umm, yes, we’re all okay. About my back pack?”
“Oh yes, no I’m afraid no one turned it in. Perhaps your friend, Libby? Maybe she took it for you?” Ms Bailey’s clasped her hands in front of her and shift her feet slightly, those silver eyes boring into mine.
“That actually makes since, thank you! We’ll be going now.” When I turned to leave I realized Luca was still watching Ms Bailey so I grabbed his arm and dragged him with me a few steps before he got his bearings and reached to open the office door. We walked out of the school side by side, but Luca looked far away, his hands in the pockets of his jeans and his head bent.
“Luca? Is everything okay?” I asked softly, I knew I shouldn’t care, not after he’d ignored my existence the entire time I had lived in Liberty, but I couldn’t stand someone looking so down and not trying to help.
“Huh?” He mumbled as he lifted his eyes to mine and blinked away the sadness there. His charming smile was back on his face in seconds. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“No he isn’t.” Ellie said, “He’s sad.”
“Why is he sad? Does it have to do with Ms Bailey? His attitude changed when we spoke to her.” What could the principle possible have to do with Luca becoming so sad so quickly?
“Lucifer, Luca’s wolf, says that Ms Bailey is the mother of Luca’s mate, but that she doesn’t approve of him and has forbidden the two from being together.”
“You can talk to other wolves?” I asked, surprised. This part of being a werewolf/Lycan hadn’t been explained to me yet.
“Yes.” Answered Ellie. “And no, before you ask, all wolfs can’t do it. It’s one of our special skills.”
“Exactly how many special gifts will we have Ellie?!”
“Enough as we need for what is coming.”
“What is coming Ellie?” But I could feel her retreat into the back of my mind. Talking with Lucifer must of worn her out, just as healing Vespian and drained me of energy earlier.
“Luna? You got a far away look on your eye, are you okay?” Luca asked beside me, concern creasing his forehead.
“Yeah, I’m fine, Ellie was talking to me.” I answered before continuing to walk towards the schools doors once again.
“So you do have a wolf?” Luca’s voices sounded excited, he was just as curious about me as I was about his kind.
“Uh yeah, kind of, she talks to me in my mind, but she said we won’t turn till I turn 18.” As we reached the doors Luca once again opened the door and held it open for me, falling back into step beside me as we walked down the steps and onto the side walk towards my car. “She actually was telling me that you were sad. About Ms Bailey keeping your mate from you.”
Luca’s head snapped over to look at me, his eyes wide in shock, he stopped walking and grabbed my shoulders turning me to fully face him. “How do you know that? I haven’t told anyone, not my parents, not my Alpha, not even Zander.”
“Apparently Ellie is able to talk to other wolves, she Lucifer told her that Ms Bailey refuses to accept you as her daughters mate and is keeping you apart. Is that true?” My voice was small when I added the question at the end. Luca was looking at me like I had two heads and the grip on my shoulders became tight though I don’t think he realized.
“Lucifer… I- I can’t believe he just…” Luca trailed off, his eyes seeming to look into space over my head. His hands still held my shoulders on his vice like grip and if he got any tighter I’d have bruises. Luca’s eyes shut before he took a deep breath and continued. “I didn’t want anyone to know. With holding a mate is against our laws and I knew the Alpha would confront Lucille, I mean, Ms Bailey, about keeping my mate from me. But it isn’t a normal circumstance.”
A loud growl vibrated the ground around us making me raise my hands to cover my ears and shaking Luca out of his thoughts, his eyes napped open and his hands dropped from my shoulders as he looked towards the edge of the forest. “s**t!” I heard him say as I turned to follow his eyes.
Vespian was striding from the forest with purposeful, long strides with nothing but a paid of pants and a button up shirt that was open and flapping around him as he rushed towards us. I knew I should be focused on his very angry looking face and glowing eyes, but damn if he didn’t have an amazingly hot body. My eyes raked down his chest and over his perfect 6 pack before looking hungrily at the v the disappeared into the waist of his pants. When I raised my eyes back to his perfect face I realized he wasn’t only hot as hell, he was pissed to hell and back too.
