Delilah now being a seventeen year old and still as popular as ever was a senior in high school with her magic still hidden although it has grown more powerful with every passing day. She was still yearning for someone she could be herself with because for all intensive purposes she still felt alone. What was the point of it all? Being popular but yet and still ever so isolated. Alone in a crowd, could there be anything more pathetic?
Delilah walking through the same high school corridors that she had always walked through every day of her high school career, unbeknownst to her met the eyes of a stranger. Although the event only lasted a couple of seconds for the two of them it was a lifetime. They were frozen in time as her hair curled up around her like a random gust of wind had blew it up and off her shoulders as their eyes locked in on each other in bewilderment and wonder. It was if they knew each other, but how could one know someone they just met? At that moment he smiled and introduced himself.
(Lovell) Hello, my name is Lovell… and what is yours?
(Delilah) My name is Delilah.
Was all she could manage to stammer out of her mouth.
(Lovell) Nice to meet you, but if we stand here any longer we will both be late for class.
Delilah shook her head as if to snap back into reality and continued on her way. His name would forever be etched into her memory. Meeting him had aroused her interest and as bad as she needed air to breathe she had to know more. Lovell wondered to himself, “What in the world was that?” he had never felt anything like that before. It was like nothing in the universe mattered to him anymore. He undoubtedly had to find out more about this girl. For the next couple of days they kept awkwardly running into each other until Lovell built up the courage to speak to her again.
(Lovell) Hey, Delilah is your name right?
(Delilah) Yes, and yours is Lovell right?
(Lovell) Uh yea… so hey, do you want to hang out sometime?
(Delilah) Sure, I guess as long as your girlfriend doesn’t mind.
(Lovell) Who said I have a girlfriend? I don’t have a girlfriend.
(Delilah) Good, just checking... so when do you want to hang out?
(Lovell) How about after school, we can meet outside by the bleachers. I heard about this ice cream parlor not far from here.
(Delilah) Oh you mean “O’Neill’s”.
(Lovell) Yea, I think that’s what the place is called. Is there something wrong with it?
(Delilah) No, it’s just that everyone goes there after school. All my friends will be there.
(Lovell) We don’t have to go there we can go somewhere else.
(Delilah) Uh no, its okay, I will see you then.
Delilah walked away in complete disbelief that she had finally spoken to him, and in wonder as to how she had never seen him before now as her friends would not be quite about it.
(Friend) Delilah’s got a date!
(Friend) I never thought she would be remotely interested in anyone from this school, let alone the town. (Delilah) I don’t know, do you think I should? Nobody here knows him!
(Friend) Well, now you do! Don’t forget to give us all the details tomorrow.
(Delilah) Alright, I guess I will see you guys tomorrow.
All day long Delilah daydreamed about her upcoming meeting with Lovell as if it were a scene right out of her favorite fairy tale story. Not before long the final bell would ring and school would be over for the day and as planned Delilah met with Lovell at the ice cream parlor. Lovell intended on being a perfect gentlemen by saving her a seat and ordering their ice cream. He managed to order her favorite flavor of butter pecan which also happened to be his favorite as well. They sat and enjoyed each other’s company paying no attention to those that watched them or the time that slipped so quickly away.
(Delilah) How come I have never seen you on campus before now?
(Lovell) My mother just transferred me here from another school.
(Delilah) What school did you transfer from?
(Lovell) It was a private school that my mom can no longer afford to send me to, so we will just leave it at that. What about you?
Delilah got the impression that she was asking too many questions so they just continued to carry on a casual conversation without going much further into the things they were not ready to talk about. After that day, Lovell and Delilah became inseparable and her so called friends distant memories. Delilah didn’t really care about anyone else except Lovell and her friends were collateral damage. She was never really attached to them anyway, and she felt like she could tell him anything. For the first time in a long time she felt comfortable enough to be herself around him. He even began to show her the magic that he could do and made her promise not to tell anyone, and she did the same. One day, Delilah felt that she could trust him with all of her secrets and soon started to unravel. No one had ever made her feel the way he did, and the fact that he shared his secrets with her and no one else led her to believe she could trust him. Little by little she started showing him the magic that she could do and more and more he showed her what he could do. He had even admitted to her that he saw her in the library and all that she did. They were so enthralled with each other that no one else existed. They were in a world of their own. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months.
With Delilah’s popularity Lovell became instantly assimilated into the world that was high school. They had become the couple that everyone wanted to be. Lovell had now become captain of the school sports team and soon had more friends than he could count. Everyone knew his name. He took to it naturally of course although he never let it go to his head. When it was time for the school’s annual “Hollows dance” Delilah and Lovell were elected as its queen and its king. The “Hollows dance” was the most elaborate of school events. It was more like a ball where the students played key roles in its activities, decoration and planning. Every year the planning was awarded to the most popular of students which in this case would be Delilah and Lovell’s friends. Students attend the event in ball gowns and tuxedos and arrive in horse drawn carriages with drivers and footman. Delilah was not ready for her family to know about Lovell as of yet so she made it appear as though she only be attending the dance with her friends. They showed up to pick her up from her home and they all rode together to meet up with their dates at the dance. The night went off without a hitch and the students were having a marvelous time. They danced and enjoyed their favorite events as the band played. Delilah and Lovell danced all night long together in the midst of their friends. Delilah now felt that she could completely trust Lovell with everything. She did not like feeling as though she was lying to him by not telling him who she really was especially now with how close they had grown. It was at the dance that Delilah had finally decided she would tell him about who and what she really was. She waited until they were finally alone and away from all of their friends to speak with him.
(Delilah) Can we go somewhere and talk?
(Lovell) You look troubled is something wrong?
(Delilah) I have to tell you something and I do not wish to say it here.
(Lovell) Ok we can go for a walk out on the grounds.
Lovell escorted Delilah away from the dance and outside to the gazebo waiting in the school’s well-manicured lawn and courtyard. It had been decorated for the dance so it was romantically lit with festive décor and flowers.
(Delilah) I want to tell you something but I am now not sure if I should.
(Lovell) You can tell me anything you know that right?
(Delilah) My powers, you used to say that you have never seen them before and there is a reason why.
(Lovell) Why is that?
(Delilah) It is because I am different. I am what is known to be as a Faylinn.
Delilah told him what she knew of her father and how she is really supposed to be member of the Faylinn household. She even told him how they shunned her and her mother and how one day she would set things right.
(Lovell) Are you serious? You are in fact a Faylinn?
(Delilah) Not just a Faylinn, but also something apparently called an “Elemental” as my family tells it. I have both powers!
(Lovell) So how come, you have the birthmark of your mother’s family?
(Delilah) It is because an “Elemental” is more powerful, than a Faylinn apparently.
Lovell just stared at Delilah in complete disbelief, and then it occurred to him that his father’s mission could now be fulfilled. What strange luck! As if it was destined to be so. It confused him and gave him mixed emotions because he never expected to fall for a Faylinn. It was not his mission to marry into a Faylinn family it was his sister’s. If only he had met her earlier his sister would not have had to die. How could his luck be so twisted? Here he is with the girl of his dreams and she turns out to be a Faylinn!
(Delilah) Why are you staring at me like that, Lovell say something!
Lovell just looked down wishing she had never told him, shook his head and said he had to leave. As he walked away, Delilah could not help but think that she made the biggest mistake of her life by telling the truth and she wondered what would happen next. Delilah hurried home in tears, terrified of what might happen to her and her family. How could she have been so stupid, and so blind?! How could she think she could trust anyone with her secrets aside from her family? She rushed through the door when she reached her house and ran upstairs to her room and slammed the door so hard that the entire house shook because she was so upset. Her family looked at each other curious as to what could have happened to cause her to make her this angry. Her mother decided to go upstairs and enter her room to figure out what happened and to find out how she could comfort her. Terrible things happened whenever Delilah was upset. The last time she threw a tantrum it devastated an entire town. Delilah was too young to remember and her family packed up and moved letting the town believe it was due to a hurricane.
(Mother) How was the dance dear?
(Delilah) It was horrible! the absolute worst!
(Mother) Why are you so upset what is the matter?
(Delilah) I have done something so terrible mother. We could all be in danger!
(Mother) What is it child?! I am sure it is nothing that we cannot fix.
(Delilah) I told someone…
(Mother) Told someone what dear?
(Delilah) I told someone everything! About me, about us! Everything!
(Mother) Delilah you did not! Please tell me this is some sick joke!
(Delilah) I am sorry mother. I did not mean to! I thought I could trust him!
(Mother)It’s a he?! Tell me who did you tell and why did you not use a memory charm?!
(Delilah) I thought I could trust him mother. He showed me things and I did the same. How could I have been so stupid?!
(Mother) We have to leave Delilah, pack your things! We are leaving.
(Delilah) What do you mean leave?! We cannot just leave my whole life is here!
(Mother) You must wipe his memory and then we must leave. It is the only way we can protect you!
(Delilah) What do you mean the only way? Have you done this before?!
(Mother) When you were a toddler we had to do the same. You almost destroyed an entire town you were so upset. We had to take you away before anyone realized it was you.
(Delilah) Why have you never told me?
(Mother) None of that is important now! You must find him and wipe his memory.
(Delilah) I do not know if I can!
(Mother) If you do not life as we know it will be over do you not understand?! You are in grave danger. What do you know about the person you told? What did he do when you told him?
(Delilah) It was a boy in my school, a transfer student. We are actually kind of dating but he just turned cold and left me after I told him.
(Mother) Dating?! What other secrets have you been keeping?!
(Delilah) Mother I am sorry! I needed someone; someone I thought was like me, someone who could understand.
(Mother) This mistake could cost us our lives! Do you know where he lives, how can we find him?
(Delilah) I do not know where he lives and why do you ask? Surely you are not thinking of harming him?
(Mother) Are you honestly trying to protect him right now over your family?
(Delilah) No! Maybe he will not tell anyone can I at least find out if he did?
(Mother) He could be lying to you! Your entire relationship could be a lie! How can I talk some sense into you, child?!
At that moment her aunt came upstairs to find out what all of the yelling was about.
(Aunt) Just what is going on here? We can hear the yelling from downstairs!
(Mother) Well go on and speak up young lady!
(Delilah) I told someone everything about us!
(Aunt) You did what?! How could you be so careless?!
(Delilah) I do not need the two of you ganging up on me now!
(Aunt) Obviously you need something because we have gone over this at least a thousand times!
(Delilah) I needed a friend, a “real” friend! that is what I needed!
(Mother) What is that supposed to mean?! You have plenty of friends and you have us!
(Aunt) Okay let’s all calm down here and collect ourselves. Obviously there is something that we are not seeing here going on with Delilah. Do you care to explain Delilah?
(Delilah) I have no one that I can really talk to. I know I can come to my family for anything but I need someone my own age. I have spent my life hiding whatever it is that I am and I am sick and tired of it!
(Mother) We did not know you felt this way. I am sorry.
(Aunt) So what do we do now?
(Mother) Now that you are almost an adult Delilah it is only fair that you decide what you would like to do.
(Delilah) I have no idea what we should do or what the right thing to do is. I at least would like to find out if he told anyone to see if there is any real threat here. We cannot just pack up and run anymore. If he told anyone I promise I will wipe his memory and then we can leave.
(Aunt) That sounds fair enough.
(Mother) Every bone in my body is telling me we will regret not leaving right now… We should consult the bones.
(Delilah) There is no need for any fortune telling, it will be fine mother I promise.
Delilah’s family chose to spend the rest of the evening as normal as they could even though there was a high level of uncertainty in the air. Delilah paced in her room as her thoughts continued to swirl in her mind because she could not be sure of what the next day would hold either. Could she honestly bring herself to use her memory charm on Lovell? Her head was plagued with so many questions as to why he reacted the way that he did. She could not help but to feel that there was something that he was not telling her. That night she could hardly sleep. Delilah tried to reassure herself that it was all some big misunderstanding and that everyone including herself was making a bigger deal out of the whole situation than was necessary.
