Kayden POV
We stayed outside for a while, feeling the need to stay away from Tyson at the moment. I knew that it went against what Valeria wished, but I didn’t really know how to handle Tyson when he was like this.
“What’s up with Warren?” Evy asked, pulling me out of my thoughts.
I looked up and saw Warren walking towards us, his face pale and his lips pressed into a thin line.
“What happened to you?” Garrett frowned.
Warren looked around and lowered his voice to a whisper.
“Something’s wrong.” He hissed. “The Alpha is not himself.”
I nodded.
“What happened?” I asked.
Pain shone in Warren’s eyes and my blood ran cold.
Did something happen to Valeria?
“He commanded me.” He whispered. “I don’t know what happened. I can’t…”
He stopped himself, his breathing turning ragged.
“What happened?” I asked.
“I-I cut the Luna’s hair off.”
We stared at him.
“What?” Evy gasped.
“This keeps getting worse and worse.” Garrett muttered. “And there’s not a single wolf in this pack strong enough to challenge Tyson.”
“And we don’t know what else that woman has up her sleeve.” I added. “I think she’s a witch, covering her scent. But controlling a lycan Alpha like that takes some serious power.”
“She’s been with him ever since he started acting weird.” Warren agreed. “And I heard that Lizette tried to talk to Tyson after the announcement and he banished her.”
“Woah.” Evy whispered, her eyes wide in disbelief. “So she’s gone?”
Warren nodded.
“I know she was a pain in the ass for the Luna, but it feels like he banished her for the wrong reasons.” He replied. “This is all wrong.”
Garrett sighed.
“You’re right.” He said and glanced at Evy. “We need help.”
Evy nodded with a sad smile and Warren narrowed his eyes at them.
“You’re going to try to get out of here?” He asked.
Garrett nodded.
“You’re crazy.” Warren whisper-yelled. “That’s a death sentence, especially considering how unstable Tyson is right now. And what about the vampires outside the borders?”
“There are no vampires outside the border.” I replied. “At least not any hostile ones. I think it’s all a ruse to keep us all locked in and give the army a reason to attack them.”
It seemed like Warren did the math pretty quickly, because he nodded.
“Take the route north of the hills.” He whispered. “It will take longer to reach the border, but there aren’t as many guards in that region. You might be able to slip through easier.”
Evy nodded.
“I know that route.” She whispered.
“I gotta go.” I mumbled. “I shouldn’t be hearing any more of this anyway.”
Garrett nodded, a sad look in his eyes.
“Take care of our Alpha and Luna.” He whispered.
“I’ll try.” I whispered back.
I didn’t know who was watching us, so I resisted the urge to hug them.
“Good luck.” I mumbled, before Warren and I made our way back to the castle.

Garrett POV
Evy stared at me with wide eyes, and I could see the fear shining in them.
“Maybe there’s another way.” She whispered.
“At what cost?” I asked. “Valeria is stuck in the dungeon, and things are getting worse and worse…”
My voice broke.
“She’s my Luna.” I continued. “And I’m a completely worthless Gamma. Valeria is so powerful, and she doesn’t need anyone to protect her. But right now she’s vulnerable and in a lot of danger, and we are the only ones that can help her.”
I put my hands on Evy’s upper arms.
“And then I have this overwhelming urge to protect you too.” I whispered with a small smile on my face. “You are my everything, and I love you so much.”
I leaned my forehead against hers, feeling the sparks erupt across my face.
“The pack isn’t safe anymore.” I mumbled. “I don’t want you around here if things get ugly.”
Evy shook her head.
“I don’t want to leave Valeria.” She whispered. “But there’s no other way.”
I nodded and captured her lips with mine in a passionate kiss.
What we were about to do was dangerous, and I hoped that this kiss wasn’t going to be our last.
When we pulled away, Evy looked in the direction we were supposed to go, and then glanced back at me.
I nodded.
“Go.”
We shifted at the same time, tearing through our clothes and sprinted towards the forest.
I let Evy take the lead, keeping my eyes peeled for wolves in the forest. It didn’t take long until I felt wolves nearby and my heart pounded a little faster from the fear.
What if we didn’t make it through?
I promised myself that no matter what happened, Evy had to get out of here.
“Kato.” I said to my wolf. “Tell Valaska to keep running, no matter what happens.”
“On it.” Kato replied and went silent for a while while he mindlinked Valaska trying to persuade her to keep going.
I sat back, watching through Kato’s eyes everything around us to make sure that I could spot any wolves that would try to intercept us.
And it didn’t take long until I saw two wolves running towards us.
“RUN!!!” Kato yelled in my head.
As the wolves charged at us, I immediately sprung to action and ran around Evy on her left, then tackled the first wolf from the side, making both of us crash into the other wolf.
I saw a flash of light golden fur as Evy jumped over the pile of wolves on the ground and I scrambled to get away from the warriors trying to keep me at bay. My wolf was bigger than theirs, so it didn’t take long for me to get up and run after her. The wolves I tackled howled, alerting the others nearby and I knew that it wouldn’t take long until reinforcements arrived.
I just had to keep them busy enough for Evy to slip through.
We ran out of the forest and I saw the border up ahead. When I looked over my shoulder I saw a large group of wolves coming our way, closing in with every stride.
I pushed forward when I saw wolves coming up on either side of us, and my heart caught in my throat when I thought that we both were going to get caught.
“Tell Valaska to run.” I instructed Kato and took control of our body.
When the wolves came closer, I immediately started attacking the ones closest to Evy, biting and swiping my paws at anything and anyone I could reach.
We were a large heap of fighting wolves, and I realized quickly that this was a battle we were going to lose.
