Just like the city where Jason really lived, City L was also a tourist city, with one bus line which was used as a special tourist line.
It was the hottest summer travel season, and countless tourists had come from all over the world to visit. Tens of thousands of tourists came and went on this special tourist line every day. Most of the time the buses were full of passengers. There wasn't even any standing room. The passengers were completely packed inside like sardines.
One day, an unthinkably terrifying incident took place on the tourist bus at noon during heavy traffic.
No one knew exactly how it happened. The only available evidence was a video from a dashboard cam of a private car behind the bus.
While driving, a dark green retro-looking bus suddenly started swerving like the driver was drunk, slamming into several cars before it managed to stop.
The car owners who were innocently involved in the accident were absolutely furious. After struggling out of their mangled car doors, they surrounded the bus and banged on the doors and windows, trying to get the driver out so that they could teach him a lesson.
Unexpectedly, they thumped the door for a long time, but the bus driver would not get out. Instead, they heard extremely horrifying screams and heartrending cries from inside the bus.
Blood splashed against a window, making the group of people instinctively take a big step backward.
They all looked at each other in bewilderment and fear.
“What on earth is going on?!” a bold man shouted at the bus.
“Is it a terrorist attack?”
“That's possible...”
“Let's call 911!”
Before they could get through to 911, a woman whose face was covered in blood suddenly ran up to the window and pressed almost her entire face up against it with a loud bang. She tried her best to push her face out, trying to smash the window with her head to escape.
Unfortunately, the window was too thick for her fragile head to break through, and all she could do was make several cries for help which were muffled behind the glass window.
Everyone could clearly see her ferocious face, but could only hear her faint cries for help.
Suddenly a monster rushed up from behind her, which frightened the people who were trying to get into the vehicle to save her, causing them to nearly fall over.
It was undoubtedly a terrifying monster.
Its face was a pale, purplish gray. It looked like a corpse that had been dead for a week, but it was still moving freely and hungered for blood.
It held the woman’s head, forcing her to expose her frail neck, and bit down hard.
The woman screamed in despair, and blood sprayed everywhere, quickly turning the glass window red.
Everyone was taken aback, almost unable to believe what they were seeing.
“Is this… a movie?”
They felt a little hopeful for a moment, thinking that it was just a film shoot, until the woman’s neck was bitten clean off, and her head rolled aside like a loose ball, even though she had just been desperately fighting for her life.
Everyone was at a loss for words. “...Oh my God.”
Then came three more monsters. Judging from their appearance, there was a man, a woman, and even a little girl who was less than ten years old.
They all had terrifying faces, and were simply corpses that acted on bloodthirsty instinct.
Soon, the woman’s body had been totally consumed.
With half of its face covered in blood, the young zombie suddenly spotted the humans outside of the bus. It lunged forward, pressing its face against the window and opening its mouth. It was covered in blood and shredded meat, and was much bigger than a normal human’s. It seemed to be provoking them like some sort of beast.
“Ahhh...”
“Zombies!”
Everyone scattered.
The bus looked like hell on earth, and no one dared approach it.
Two hours later, when a unit of heavily-armed soldiers arrived and forced their way onto the bus, they found no bodies, and an interior that had been almost completely repainted with blood.
All the soldiers looked at each other, shuddering with goosebumps running up their spines.
Where did all the bodies go?
Did they leave on their own?
From that day on, a terrible virus spread wildly through City L.
Less than a month later, this metropolis which had been incomparably magnificent and prosperous, became a treacherous dead city.
All the neighboring cities quickly cut off transportation to City L. No one dared enter it, and the local population weren't allowed to leave. They were left to sink or swim.
“My dad died a week ago,” said Lily.
She was a precocious child. Perhaps it was because she had heard the adults around her talk about the incidents many times that she was able to retell what had happened in City L.
Even though she was more mature than her peers, her tiny hands were still clasped uncontrollably around the small dinosaur doll in her arms as she spoke. Her fingers sank into the small dinosaur’s body and her beautiful big eyes were unblinking and red, as if she was remembering something terrible.
“He was eaten by those monsters when he tried to protect me and my mom. My mom managed to take me away, but we got separated on the subway. I don’t know if she’s alive or dead now...”
As she said this, Lily’s big eyes became clouded with tears.
Zoe was about to say something to comfort her when the corpse standing behind Lily suddenly opened its eyes and pulled her into its arms. Horrible ragged howls came out of its broken throat before it bit at Lily’s delicate neck.
This twist took everyone by surprise, and Lily screamed in terror. Zoe was very close to her, but she still couldn’t react in time. By the time she'd reached for the dagger in her leg bag, it was already too late!
"Oh no!"
Zoe’s heart sank. She hadn't expected the corpse that had been motionless for so long to suddenly turn into an aggressive zombie!
Just in the nick of time, Jason put a hand into the zombie’s mouth without hesitation to replace Lily’s small neck that could've been broken in just one bite.
Zoe couldn't believe he would do this, “Jason?!”
The zombie bit into his hand which instantly bled. The smell of blood drove it even crazier. It straightened itself up and gripped Jason’s forearm with steel-like teeth, tearing at his flesh.
Jason’s blood sprayed across Lily's face, who almost froze in fright. Zoe quickly dragged her back to safety.
In a flash, bullet comments flooded across Jason’s livestream.
[It’s over. That was sooner than I thought.]
[He’s so stupid. That kid’s not worth saving. He should've let her die, but he used one of his arms to save that loser. He won’t survive.]
[It’s a shame he got killed before the bet even started.]
[Let’s leave. This is boring. I should never have watched this livestream.]
[So stupid! What a moron! This is a complete waste of my time!]
The number of viewers in the livestream dwindled quickly as many people left, but those who stuck around soon found out that what happened next was beyond their imaginations.
When Zoe looked back, she saw that Jason had no intention of withdrawing his arm as if he didn’t feel any pain. Instead, he used his arm to keep the zombie from escaping as he pressed the muzzle of the g*n against the back of its head and fired a decisive shot into its brain.
There was an almost deafening bang, pinning the zombie to the ground with the impact of the shot, and forming a pool of shredded meat. After twitching for a while, it could no longer move, except for its teeth opening and closing mechanically around a piece of flesh.
Zoe and Lily were so frightened that they took a few steps backwards despite themselves. “Your... your arm!”
Everyone knew that a zombie bite could infect people with a virus, causing them to transform into a zombie. A chunk of flesh and some bone had been completely removed from Jason’s forearm, which was now dripping with blood. Soon, a pool of blood had formed in front of his toes.
It was a frightening scene. Any other people would've screamed if they'd been bitten like that.
However, it seemed that Jason didn’t care too much. He raised his arm, looked at his wounds, and smiled at Zoe and Lily with a slightly embarrassed look.
“I’m sorry,” Jason said with a smile. “I’ve scared you now, haven’t I? It does look quite scary.”
Both Zoe and Lily were at a loss for words.
They were already puzzled by his indifference to being bitten by a zombie, but now something more unthinkable had happened.
Jason looked at the wound. He was clearly badly hurt. If the blood circulated through his body with the virus, it was likely that he would turn into a zombie.
“Miss Zoe,” Jason asked Zoe, “Can you lend me a dagger? I’ll give it back to you later.”
Zoe asked with doubt in her voice, “You... what are you going to do?”
Jason smiled and didn't reply. He kindly said, “You don’t have to come near me. Just put the dagger on the table next to you and I’ll get it by myself. Please hurry up a bit. I'm guessing you don’t want me to turn into a zombie. If that happens, you’ll have one less partner and one more enemy.”
Zoe hesitated for a while before taking out a dagger, placing it on the table, and asking, “What are you going to do?”
Jason grasped the dagger in his intact hand, pointed the blade at his arm and said to Zoe and Lily, “I’m sorry, ladies, but please look away.”
Zoe could vaguely imagine what he was about to do. Things were about to get b****y.
She covered Lily’s eyes with both hands, but didn’t look away herself. Instead, she looked curiously at Jason.
The viewers also showed great curiosity in the bullet comments.
[What is he going to do?]
[It can’t be what I’m thinking...]
[No way. How could this weakling endure that much pain? Even a tough guy couldn't manage that?]
[Oh, no... He’s really going to...]
There were only a few spectators in the current livestream, but by the time Jason had thrust the dagger into his arm, bullet comments were pouring in.
Jason’s eyes remained unblinking as he made a few slashes at his forearm that the zombie had bitten, cutting it clean off.
His expression didn’t change the whole time. It looked as if he wasn’t cutting off his own arm, but was preparing a tough piece of beef for dinner instead.
When his forearm fell to the ground, Zoe was too shocked to speak.
When he looked back and saw her terrified expression, Jason, who had always found it hard to socialize with others, didn't know what kind of expression to wear. He simply stood there and smiled with an awkward but polite expression.
“Your daggers are really sharp. Very useful.”
Zoe: “…Oh my God!”
What a lunatic!
