Chapter 17

Lucas

As we sat there eating lunch with Damien and Dy, I couldn't help but admire my new mate. She took my breath away. She was asking Dy all kinds of questions, and Dy reassured her that she would give her a cliff notes version of pack life . Damien linked me "Hey lover boy! Can I borrow your mind for a minute?"

I linked back, "yeah I guess"

"As much as I would love to leave you sitting here like a puppy, our fathers will meet us in your office in 30 minutes" He linked

"Okay", I growled back.

It flashed back into my head that my father wouldn't protect her and her mom. We finished our meal and drove back to the packhouse. When we arrived, Damien and I headed to my office while Dy had squealed and pulled Val up to her and Damien's room. Shortly after arriving at my office, there was a knock "enter", I growled.

"You should mind your tone, son." as my father, Samuel and his Beta Drake, entered.

"Remember you're not the Alpha anymore, father?" I asked.

"Yes, but I do deserve some respect, son. Your mother wanted to remind you of the party we're having this weekend, and that you are requested to attend." He said

"Tell mother thank you, but I will not be attending since I have a mate" I said to him, as a matter of fact. "Unless she would like me to bring her with me."

"What?!! Who!" He growled "why didn't you tell us?"

"Her name is Val, and she is the reason I called you here. Her and her mother actually. " I growled back.

"What do you mean?" He asked.

"Well, did you not turn away a she wolf with a pup seeking refuge 13-14 years ago?" I asked.

"That's the girl you want to be your mate? I won't allow it!" my father was now yelling and standing

"It's not your choice father, that's who the moon goddess chose for me and I will protect her like you never did. " I growled back.

Damien and Drake were now standing between us. Drake spoke "Look, you both need to calm down, and we'll tell you why we didn't protect them."

The former Alpha backed up and continued" when they came here, they were seeking refuge from the Blood Moon pack. I'm sure you've already heard that their Alphas can be ruthless and allow a "mate run" every year. They treat their women and children poorly and like slaves.

My brother had met their Alpha, Vlad, during some summit, and wanted to bring some of their traditions here, like that one. I refused, and threw him out of the pack." My father said.

"Brother?" I asked.

"Yes, I have a younger brother, who was going to be my beta until he started talking crazy. Wanting multiple mates and doing these mate runs, and thought we should go warring to increase our pack territory." He continued

"He tried to challenge me for the Alpha title, and I won, but I couldn't kill him at the request of our parents. He was made a rogue."

"So I could not keep one of Vlad's mates here to start a war with another pack. Max did not agree with the decision and left to watch over them on the outskirts." My father had continued

"So you thought them fending for themselves was safer? You could have taken them in to this pack. Did you know Val's mom had her cursed to keep her safe since you wouldn't?" I asked,

"It was better for Blue Eclipse pack!" he growled.

"This pack will keep her safe now. Any idea what happened to my uncle?" I asked.

"No idea after I cast him out as a rogue", dad said.

"Thank you for the info" I said monotonely.

After they left, Damien looked at me and said "what are we going to do?

Val

Dy took me up to her and Damien's room. It was the same size as Lucas' but definitely had a woman's touch. Dy ran through how the pack worked; the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and gamma. Along with the warriors and the various Omegas that did housework. She told me that not everyone's mates are wolves, some are humans or witches.

"So, can I ask, what's up with the 2 scars on your neck? Is that some sort of cult thing?" I chuckled, and started blushing.

I had noticed that Damien and Dy had them, along with others we passed, but Lucas didn't.

"Oh!" She said, grabbing her neck. "It's a mate mark."

"Okay? You're going to have to explain that one. Like a tattoo? " I asked.

Dy chuckled "well once you are mated, mates mark each other as an outward sign to others that you are taken."

"Plus, it's a hot spot whenever your mate touches it." She added.

"You have an engagement ring on, wouldn't that do the same thing?" I asked, feeling stupid.

"Yes, but it also completes your bond," She answered.

"Our bond?" I asked. "sorry I know these are dumb questions."

"No worries, you didn't know all the things you didn't know. Well, since you and Lucas mated, can you feel his emotions at all?" She asked.

"I can tell when he's tense, but I don't know about feel it," I explained.

"Maybe it will come later, since you did have to break a curse and everything. Normally, mates can somewhat feel each other’s emotions before marking each other, but even more so after marking. You can also tell where each other is. You're also a source of comfort for each other". Dy explained more

"Oh! Hmm, so kind of like a GPS tracker huh? " I giggled.

"Kind of!" She laughed.

"So how did you know that we mated?" I paused in the middle.

" Aside from what happened after, your smell is different. " Dy said matter of factly,

"My smell?" I said as I started to lift my arm up to smell myself.

"No silly. Everyone has a smell to them. What do you smell when you're close to Lucas?" Dy asked.

"Pine with fresh mountain air" I said.

"I smell maple syrup and strawberries" Dy said, laughing.

"Really?" I asked

She nodded. "So has Lucas talked to you about being Luna?" Dy asked.

"What's a Luna other than someone's name?" I asked, confused.

"The Luna is the Alpha's mate and then helps to run the pack. She is the one who helps more with the household, but also helps in making decisions for the pack along with the Beta and myself." Dy told me.

"No, I-I-I can't do that. How would I be able to? I just found out that I'm a wolf. How could I lead anyone else? " I stammered and I could feel my anxiety rising. Thinking to myself, why didn't he tell me any of this? I didn't notice the door coming open with Damien and Lucas running in.

All of a sudden, Lucas' arms were around me, and I could feel myself calm in them. "What happened?" He demanded of Dy.

"I was giving her a rundown of the different positions in the pack, and I asked her if you guys had talked about her being Luna", Dy said innocently. "I-I didn't know?" Dy said, starting to cry. Damien grabbed her

Lucas

"Damien this is not how I wanted this to go" I linked him

"I know!" He linked back.

"Dy was trying to help!" He linked again

"I know!" I linked him back.

I looked down at my beautiful mate as she was now sobbing in my arms, and I picked her up and carried her to my room. I set her on the couch, and just let her calm down some more before I spoke.

I kneeled down in front of her, "Baby please look at me", I asked softly.

She barely raised her head up to meet my gaze, her light brown eyes now red from crying. "I didn't mention the Luna stuff yet because everything is so new. I didn't want to scare you. I know that you are very capable of helping me lead this pack, and in time, hopefully, you will see that. It is nothing that has to be done tomorrow or the next day," I said softly.

"Okay." Was all she could muster right then.

"Okay, I'll be right back." I went into the bathroom and grabbed a washcloth and wet it.

I took it back and wiped Val's face, as she was already falling asleep on the couch. I picked her up, carried her to the bed, she curled up next to me as I laid down. Her breathing slowed and I began to relax. I linked Damien "I'm sorry man, how is she?"

"She's calmed down now. She apologized, she forgot that this was all new and probably overwhelming." Damien linked back.

"tell her I'm sorry. I know she was just trying to help." I linked back

I closed my eyes and slept with my beautiful mate. I would protect her with everything I could.
