Roe's P.O.V.
"Rob, tonight is my shift." How dare he try and take my shift off me. I am perfectly capable of working, pain or no pain. Rob was leaning against his desk in his office while I stood in front of him. Staring him down.
"Roe, can you honestly tell me your not in more pain after cooking? I'm not letting you work tonight." His tone was serious but I wasn't giving in. I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Tonight's karaoke! You know full well none of the girls will work this shift and if you make them, they'll just drive the customers away with their sour mood. You have no choice and you know it. I am working my shift. I have two days off after this anyway and I promise I'll rest." With that I stormed out of his office before he could say anything. He knows I'm right. The other girls just want to find hot guys for their next hook up, and hot guys don't tend to enjoy karaoke. According to them anyway. Besides it's always a slow night so it'll be an easy shift.
An older man was doing a horrifying rendition of 'My heart will go on' when Alec appeared at my bar.
"Pass me some marshmallows so I can stuff them in my ears." He said as he covered his ear with his hands. I threw one at his face laughing as it hit him right in his eye.
"Be nice. It was his wife's favourite song." For a second he looked guilty, then he launched the marshmallow back at me smirking. "Your so gullible." I laughed and handed him today's bag of treats. He was glaring at me so I held it out like a peace offering while bowing deeply. "Please forgive me, oh gullible one." He tried and failed to suppress his laughter and snatched the bag out of my hands, shaking his head.
It was a quiet shift, but that didn't stop the tears forming in my eyes by the end of it. I hated this part. I could barely cope with the daily pain never mind this. It was like...it was like having toothache, in my arm. Constant and you can't ignore it. But now, when I've over done it, it was like wisdom tooth pain. Only worse somehow. I was attempting to mop the floor one handed when someone took the mo out of my hand a replaced it with a drink. My eyes rolled as I turned to face Alec. He put a finger to my lips before I could say anything.
"Don't even try to lie to me. Now sit down, drink your rum and be a good girl." He commanded, sitting me down before he began mopping. Infuriating man. I'm perfectly capable of mopping one handed. I just glared at him. "And you can stop with the glaring." He didn't even look at me, so I glared harder.
"Alec why are you mopping?" Damien's voice made me jump. Alec stopped, leaning on the mop and pointed at me.
"Because this woman doesn't know whats good for her. Trying to mop one handed." His arms flailed about before he went back to mopping. "And she is incapable of asking for help. Nearly crying and she's still too stubborn to ask for it." He continued to mutter to himself while I studied the ice in my drink like it was a piece of art. He was so going to pay for this. I felt Damien put a hand on my back.
"Are you not taking care of yourself, Roe?" I could hear the disappointment in his voice. This was not going to end well.
Groaning I downed my rum and just as I put the glass down, Damien threw me over his shoulder. I squealed and tried to struggle but he held me tighter.
"Damien, put me down!" I yelled. What was he doing? You don't do this to someone you've just met. I hit his back with my good hand but he just laughed at my pathetic attempt.
"If you won't look after yourself, then I'll have to." What? He can't be serious? He doesn't even know me.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I heard another laugh that wasn't his. Looking up I saw Alec doubled over laughing. Oh, he's definitely going to pay.
"I don't know why your laughing! I'll get you for this once this oaf puts me down!" Oh s**t! Did I just call Damien an oaf. Alec laughed louder and I felt my face heat up. Double s**t!
"So I'm an oaf for helping you now?" Triple s**t!
"NO! No, I just...meant that your really tall...." Ugh, I definitely looked like a tomato now. So embarrassing. Why was I so nervous like a giddy school girl?
"I don't believe you, Princess." He chuckled. Why did he have to call me that? I swear my heart just skipped a beat. What was happening. Ugh, this town was just full of infuriating men.
Damien didn't even relent once he got me back to the house. He practically threw me on the sofa and before I could even react, Jace shoved a tub of ice cream in my face. I crossed my arms and glared at him. Alec came through the door with his hands held up in surrender and made his way to sit on the edge of the coffee table in front of me. Then Damien sat beside me. I was trapped. I glared at them all.
"You're ganging up on me" I accused them. Damien held his hand out in front of me. Two of my pain pills sat there. I hated taking them because they didn't really take the pain away, they just knocked me out.
Damien's P.O.V.
My mate was maddeningly stubborn. I could only feel a fraction of her pain through the bond and it was driving me crazy. I could only imagine how she felt, and she was so good at hiding it. Even right now, as she looked at us with such fury in her eyes, you'd never guess the pain she was in. So stubborn. But I wasn't lying when I told her that I'd look after her now. If only I could tell her the truth. It had felt so good to have her close.
"I was serious about looking after you if you won't do it." I teased, holding the pills in front of her. She did an adorable attempt at a growl that made me smile, but she took the pills. She growled again as she finally took the ice cream from Jace. It was such an adorable sound coming from a human. Roe kept her right hand against her chest and I watched as she put the tub between her legs and dug in with her left hand. She moaned the as ice cream hit her tongue. You could visibly see her relax and calm down. She looked at us all sheepishly.
"Thank you guys" She bit her lip shyly and looked up at me through her eyelashes. Goddess, she was stunning. "Sorry I called you an oaf." The blush that crept up her cheeks made me want to kiss her so badly. I clearly made Roe nervous as she looked back at her ice cream and took another spoonful. I looked at Jace and mind- linked him.
"She was furious with us a minute ago?" He just shrugged.
"Don't question it. Just remember food is always the answer with Roe." I smiled as I watched her shovel down the ice cream. We sat there for a while talking when I noticed Roe's head start to drop. "Pills are kicking in." Jace said in my head as he reached out and took the tub from her just in time for her to go limp against me. I pulled her onto my lap and found her fast asleep.
"I didn't think they'd knock her out like this" I mumbled as I tucked her hair behind her ear. She looked so peaceful and so innocent.
"They don't. But she fights them until they do." Alec shook his head. My little fighter. I was gonna have my hands full with her. But I welcomed the challenge.
