Katherine made it to her dad's car, getting in then closing the door. Her father seemed tired but he still continued to be the driver, he really over exhausted himself sometimes at work, but she didn't want to bother him about it.
"So... how was school today, Katherine?" Her father suddenly asked as she looked over at him, contemplating an answer to tell him that didn't sound weird or sarcastic to him.
"It was pretty good! I wrote down my writing in my notebook and read, and then during lunch I decided to catch up on some of my math notes since I had it like right after lunch, so I wanted to be extra prepared!" She goes on about her day, her dad tries to listen while carefully driving them both towards home.
"Anything else happen?" He asked again, was that a trick question? It seems like he was trying to get to the point of something, but she couldn't figure out what. Maybe he was just being weird like usual, she was just getting a bit anxious over the question. Because sometimes those sets of letters meant that she had done something wrong at school and they called her father about it, so she would be in trouble.
"I went to the library today and stayed for a couple hours, the library lady yelled at us to get out since it was so late and she wanted to go home. But other than that, nothing much!" She tried to explain, hoping that was enough explanation for him to not question her further.
"What do you mean 'us'?" She had forgotten that she had used that while referring to being kicked out of the library, meaning she had to tell him about Gavin now. Which she wasn't looking forward to as he'd equate it to her having a boyfriend, when really Gavin was anything but a boyfriend. He seemed to.. not be into her, or any girl, like that. But, she wasn't sure, it could've just been his awkward personality that had been given to her.
"Oh... um.. us.." She stumbled a bit, looking at the road to calm her nerves and think about something else besides her own anxious terrible thoughts she was having. "There was also another person, that I met today, he's in the same math class as me."
"He...?"
"He's just a friend, his name is Gavin. Plus, I like, just met him. It's not like that, trust me." She again, tried to explain herself without sounding absolutely odd and like she was hiding something. Which, successfully, actually worked for once in her life. Thank God.
"I see, good to know that you're making friends. I'm very happy about that. Your mother would be proud of you too." Her father says as they pulled into the driveway and he turns the engine of the car off, unbuckling then getting out. Katherine followed him into the house, not wanting left outside in the dark.
Both of them ate leftovers from the fridge since it was so late and neither of them felt like cooking something new and different, they were the only two in that entire house, and it was big enough for at least five people.
But her father wanted to give her a better life after her mother died having her, so he could try to ignore his feelings over it and move on with his life, while also making sure that she had everything perfect. It was both for his life, and her own life.
She sometimes felt horrible for it, trying her best to make up for all the things that he had given her by helping around the house or trying to get him things instead. She didn't really have a job yet though, so it was kinda hard to keep up on everything on top of school being in the picture.
She went upstairs after dinner and taking her focus pills, going through her phone to look at messages from no one, since no one had called or messaged her at all because she never talked to anyone out of small talk. All she was getting notified on right now was youtube notifications and politics, and neither of those were interesting to her right now. She also kinda felt tired and like she should go to bed, but she didn't want to have another nightmare so she stayed awake.
She always had the strangest nightmares, sometimes it would just be demons or something, other times it would be deep ones, like everyone in her life leaving her to die, or her waking up one morning and feeling absolutely nothing inside of her. Like she was completely emotionless and dead. But luckily, it was just a dream and nothing that she had to worry about.
Then she was brought out of her thoughts by her phone's ring tone going off, it was 3 AM in the morning so she thought it was a bit strange for a scam caller to call at this time. She looked at the number and immediately recognized it, though she was hoping that he would've called earlier at 10 at night instead of 3 AM, it was kinda her alone time to do whatever she wanted on either her phone or tablet.
She answered the call, just so she could tell him it was too late or something... Maybe, she wasn't even sure if she wanted to go back to what she was doing after this. What if he actually had something good to say? "Hello? Gavin? How are you doing?" She says in an energetic tone, hoping she didn't wake her father who was asleep two room down from her.
Gavin waited a bit too talk, still a little freaked out by her hyper and friendly energeticness she gave every few seconds. But he still managed to get out a few words. "Hey... Uh.. You asked me to call you tonight so.. hi... I read a little of the book you gave me... so far so good."
She grinned as she jumped up from her laying down position, "I know right! It's such a great story and I'm so glad I found someone else who also seems to like it! I will tell you so much headcanons I have for it after you read it- Oh, sorry, I'm rambling again. Aren't I?" She was going into fangirl mode which was very concerning to some people, Gavin seemed to be normal about it though so maybe he was also like her when it came to that book. "And, sorry! I forgot, glad one of us remembered though!"
They talked most of the night until they both fell asleep on call, their friendship starting to form very quickly due to her books.
