3. First Day

HARMONY’S POINT OF VIEW

While we are on our way to one of the restaurants where I am currently working part-time, Genevieve is still telling me how she fell in love with Marcus and I found her story so cute.

“And when we were in 6th grade, Marcus introduces me to his peevish cousin named Ethan Archer McMillan that turns out to be the only child of our university’s owner,” Genevieve said while smiling.

“Ethan? You mean the bad boy Ethan of our university?” I asked her and she just nods at me before speaking.

“Yup! You got it right I am talking about that bad boy Ethan. I met him when we were in 6th grade and even though he is young at that time he was so peevish and irritable. Geez!” Genevieve said which made me smile because I can clearly feel how irritated she is towards that guy.

“I guess that guy is truly the type of guy that can easily get into your nerves?” I said and Genevieve immediately nod at me continuously before speaking.

“Yeah, you are right about that! Ethan is the type of guy that can easily get into your nerves so if ever you encounter him inside the university especially outside, please just don’t give a s**t about him if you didn’t want to ruin the peaceful life you have.” Genevieve said so I just nod at her as my response. After that, we finally arrived at the first restaurant where I am working. I was about to head outside alone when Genevieve told me that she will come with me so I just let her tag along.

“Oh! Hello Harmony you are so early today and who’s that with you?” My manager asked me as I head inside the staff room. Thank goodness she is already here I can already tell her about my resignation.

“Hello manager, this is my best friend Genevieve and the reason why I am here early is that I am here to inform you about my resignation,” I said while handing over the resignation letter I made earlier during our lunchtime.

“Oh, why did you decide to resign? I thought you need to work?” My manager asked me while reading the resignation letter I made earlier.

“Ah, it is because the owner of our university offered me a stable job which requires me to leave all my jobs,” I said while smiling at her. 

“You know, I have you here with me ever since you were 18 and I will just tell you this once that I have already treated you like my own daughter so seeing go is kind of hard for me.” My manager said while looking at my resignations letter.

“But I am not against that, in fact, I know that you will be able to take care of yourself now.” She continued before looking at me and I was so surprised when I saw a hint of tears in her eyes. 

“Manager,” I said while looking at her.

“I am so happy for you Harmony. Don’t worry if ever you need a job again you can always come back here okay?” My manager said while smiling at me so I just nod at her before walking towards her and hugging her so tight.

“Thank you, manager,” I said while hugging her.

“Hmm, by the way, I need to go now my shift is about to start. Just come here if you have free time okay?” My manager said before unclasping the hug and looking at my face.

“Yes manager I will surely do that,” I said while smiling at her. After that, she just tapped my shoulder first before heading inside the restaurant.

“Are you okay?” Genevieve asked me while we are walking back to the car. I just looked at her first before smiling at her faintly.

“Yeah, I am fine I just cannot help but feel sad because I have been in that restaurant for years now and it became my home so leaving that restaurant was like leaving my family,” I said while smiling faintly.

“But don’t worry! I can just visit them the moment I have the money to eat there.” I added. After that, we just head towards the next restaurant where I am also working, and like what happened earlier it also turns out to be an emotional farewell.

“Are you okay?” Genevieve asked me after we are done with the last place I have to go for this night.

“Yup! I am fine.” I said while smiling at her.

“Oh, by the way, you just resigned from all your jobs and I noticed that they didn’t give you your separation pay,” Genevieve said while frowning at me.

“Ah! The payment will be sent into my bank account.” I said while smiling at her.

“Oh, okay! So, let’s go to our house now?” Genevieve asked me so I just nod at her before we started walking again and head inside the car. As we arrived at Genevieve’s house I was so surprised when I saw how many dishes her parents prepared for us. Auntie Liana told me that it is also a congratulatory celebration for me of having a new job. After our dinner, Genevieve came with me to the grocery and also took me to my apartment. I was also able to pay for my rent this month and I didn’t need to avoid my landlady for this month.

A week after…

“Are you sure you didn’t want to come with me?” I asked Genevieve while we are walking towards the library. Today is my first day of tutoring Marcus and Genevieve’s mood seems kind of off today ever since this morning and I know the reason behind it.

“Nah, I will just go home. See you tomorrow?” Genevieve said as we stopped walking.

“Genevieve,” I said while looking at her and she just raised her brow at me while her arms were crossed on her chest.

“You should have told me earlier that you have feelings for Marcus so I can immediately decline the president’s offer,” I said which made her let out a heavy sigh.

“I will go now,” Genevieve said as she started walking away from me. I didn’t know what happened to her, she just changed all of a sudden and I didn’t want how she is treating me right now.

“Ms. Harmony?” I immediately turned around when I heard someone call me from my back and there I saw Marcus while smiling at me. 

“Ah, Marcus you’re already here,” I said while smiling at him. I need to be professional right in front of him and set aside my personal issue.

“Yes, my class just finished and I immediately head towards here because I thought that you might be here already,” Marcus said while smiling at me.

“Ahm, then shall we head inside now?” I said and he just nods at me before we started walking together inside the library. As we head inside, we just sat at the last table away from the crowd so we can focus on studying.

“Ah, by the way, I forgot to ask President McMillan on which subject should we focus so I am just going to ask you that personally. So, in which subject are we going to focus?” I asked him as we sat down on the chair.

“Ahm, I am sorry to tell you this but there is no certain subject we need to focus on because I need to study all the subjects we have as a business administration student,” Marcus said while scratching his head which made me giggle because he looked like a little boy that is so embarrassed on confessing his sins.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. We have the whole month to study so you don’t need to worry.” I said while smiling at him.

“Is there any specific subject you want to go to first?” I asked him while getting all my notebooks when I am a third-year student. 

 “Ahm, none. It’s up to you Ms. Harmony since you are the one who is going to teach me.” He said while smiling at me so I just nod at him before getting my notebook for the economic subject.

“Let’s start with the economic subject first okay?” I said while smiling at him and he just nods at me. After that, I started tutoring him and so far I found it easy teaching him. He will ask me some questions when he didn’t get what I am teaching so I will further elaborate on that part and after that, he will already get it which made teaching him so easy.

“Thank you Ms. Harmony I learned a lot from you today. So see you tomorrow again?” Marcus told me as we head outside the library.

“It was also fun and easy teaching you Marcus, yeah see you again tomorrow,” I said while smiling at him. Marcus just bowed at me before walking away from me and when he is not in my sight anymore I started to walk towards the president’s office to get my pay for this day.

“Hello Harmony, so how’s your tutoring going?” President McMillan asked me as I head inside his office.

“Ah, it was so easy teaching him President McMillan. Marcus easily gets what I am teaching and he is also so polite so teaching him was so easy.” I said while smiling.

“That is good to hear, by the way here is your payment for this day. Thank you again and keep up the good work.” President McMillan said as he handed over a white envelope.

“Wait President, isn’t this too much?” I asked him as I opened the envelope and saw a bunch of paper bills inside.

“No, that’s just enough payment for you Harmony besides Marcus’s parents were so happy because someone accepted this offer on tutoring their son. So, please accept it, Harmony.” President McMillan said while smiling at me.

“Thank you so much, President, this will help me a lot,” I said while smiling at him.

“That is good to hear then.” President McMillan said. After that, I just bid my goodbye to him before heading outside his office. As I head outside his office I almost jumped off of my feet when I saw Genevieve standing beside the door. 

“Oh my goodness Genevieve, you surprised me,” I said while holding my chest. I almost fall on the ground when Genevieve just hugged me all of sudden but thank goodness I was able to balance my body.

“I’m sorry Harmony for acting like a b***h earlier. I shouldn’t act like that since you are just doing that because it is your job and I also know that you are true to your words and you won’t fall for him right?” Genevieve said while she is crying on my chest which made me smile.

“Hush now okay? There’s no need for you to feel so apologetic okay?” I said while rubbing her head.

“But I was such a b***h earlier!” She said while still crying on my chest.

“It’s fine, it’s fine I understand you that’s why I am asking you to come with me, and besides I won’t ever fall for him trust me okay?” I said while smiling at her. We just stayed like that for a few minutes until Genevieve completely calmed down.

“By the way, I saw Ethan in the library earlier thank goodness he didn’t pester Marcus and also you,” Genevieve said while we are walking towards the parking lot.

“You’re there?” I asked her and she just nods at me as her response.

“Why didn’t you approach me? So we can study together besides Marcus also asked me where you are so I just told him that you already went home even though I didn’t know where you truly are.” I said while smiling.

“Wait? Really? Marcus asked where am I?” Genevieve asked me in a high pitch tone which indicates that she is so excited and happy at the same time.

“Yeah, he also mentioned to me that you were good friends when you were little and that your closeness just changed when you guys grow older. He also mentioned to me that the reason why he greeted you like that last week was that he was so shy to approach you.” I said while smiling at her. 

“Ah! Oh my goodness Harmony! Can I come with you tomorrow?” Genevieve asked me so I immediately nod at her with a smile on my face.

“Of course! So I can also tutor you for free HAHAHA.” I said which made her smile.

“I am so excited!” She said while smiling ear to ear. After that, we just continue talking and talking until we arrived at her car and since she is such in a good mood she invited me to eat dinner outside which I was about to decline but since she is so insistent I just have no choice but to accept it because I know that she will get sulky again if I will reject her invitation.

“Thank you so much for the free dinner, Genevieve,” I said as I head outside her car.

“No worries Harmony I am so happy because finally, we were able to do this. So, see you again tomorrow?” Genevieve said while smiling at me.

“Hmm, yeah see you again tomorrow,” I said while smiling at her. After that, I just waved my hand at her before heading inside the gate and heading towards my apartment.
