Fair and square

"Lucifer had saved me. I cannot believe it." Eve was walking alongside Kiara. "Nobody is only black or white" Kiara picked dead rose from the grass with rain drops on the petals. “Well, some are blacker than others.” Eve agreed. But she couldn’t shake off thought that maybe Lucifer is not that evil as he pictures himself. “Can I ask you something?” Eve sat down on wet and dirty bench but she didn’t mind to ruin her dress because she finds new one in her room every day. “Whatever doesn’t let you sleep, Eve” Kiara joined her. “What happened to you at this castle. And how long you have been here?” Eve felt breeze of lavenders smell coming from her hair when she shook her head. “It’s not something I am very keen on talking about to be honest.” “It cannot be worse than killing your own husband and having all paradise army coming to punish you, can it?” Kiara’s and Eve’s eyes met. Eve realized she hasn’t told this to Kiara yet, but gladly she took it without overreaction. Finally, Kiara decided to open up. “To be honest, I don’t even know. Time here goes weird. It could be ten days, a decade or eternity.” Kiara was starring at her feet. “And let’s just say that I didn’t have most wonderful love story.” Eve raised her eyebrows. Kiara chuckled. “Okay, yours might be worse. But well, there was this guy, he got me pregnant and he didn’t take the news well. Finally, I had to leave my village to save myself and my family’s honor. I had nowhere else to go. So, I roamed around hungry and exhausted until I found this forest. Or until it found me.” “And… the baby?” She heard Kiara beginning to breath heavier. She looked up to the sky before she spoke. “Unborn babies do not go to hell, Eve.” She finally said with tears in her eyes. “They haven’t committed any sins…yet” Kiara forced smile trying to show that she is fine and strong. But Eve had no doubts about that anyway. She took Kiara’s hand without even thinking. Their eyes met again but this time none of them had turned away. Kiara saw something unspeakable in Eve. Thing, she hadn’t noticed before. The loud breathing of two pounding chest had filled the space around them. Two women with shattered love stories held on each other’s hand like there was nothing else left for them in this world. Eve put her hand on Kiara’s soft cheek and leaned closer to her. She could have counted every single one of her long eyelashes, every freckle on her tiny cute nose, all the birth marks adorning her neck and chin. “Eve.” Kiara whispered at the same time as Luke. He approached out of nowhere. Eve immediately backed out madly turning to Luke with her harsh tone getting back for the ruined moment. “What?” Luke raised his brows. “Which bee had stung you today, ice princess?” he hugged Kiara and poked her nose with his finger. Eve could have sworn she’s about to throw up. “Oh yeah, princess, as much as I am annoyed by being everyone’s mailman, Lucifer would like to see you.” Eve frowned and got up. She tried to meet Kiara’s eyes to say goodbye but she turned away. Luke sat down in Eve’s spot. He put his arm around her and start chit chatting like Eve was already gone. Eve quickly walked away trying to not come back and punch him in a face.   “What you want from me again?” Eve stormed in Lucifers hall. He was, as usual, sitting in his throne-chair below the painting. “My dearest, what a delight to see you again.” He smiled. “Sit down, please.” Eve didn’t move protesting. “Just tell me what you want.” She spitted out with her mount barely opening as she spoke. “I will, I can assure you that. But maybe first I could offer my lovely guest a drink?” He drew a circle with his finger around the edge of the glass. Eve started shaking from how angry she had become. “You! One day you try to kill me, another you offer me stupid drink, then you outrage to a devil form, after that you protect me and then you all sugar and spice pretending nothing happen?!” Eve aggressively leaned on his desk. “Cut the bullshit and put your cards on the table. Poker match is over.” Lucifer just smiled and raised a glass to his lips. Eve reached for it intending to slam it to the wall but Lucifer caught her arm faster than a blink of the eye. “Careful, dear.” Lucifer whispered. He held her wrist so strong she doubted if her bones weren’t broken yet. “Watch out with who you are messing up.” He let her hand off. Eve rubbed aching skin with her palm. “So, what’s now? You going to wait until God strikes again or just end me now?” “That’s the reason I invited you here for.” Lucifer put his glass down.” I want you to come with me to Eden court palace. And I would like to propose myself to you as your attorney.” Eve froze. She imagined her meeting all the Holy community and facing every familiar face there after her crmie. “Why, why we would go to the danger heads forward.” She couldn’t absorb this yet. “No, no I can’t. Can’t come back. And you? My lawyer? Why in hell you would do that?” “I’d never miss a chance to bite God once more” He stretched his arms. “And what would do better than beating him up on a trial in lawful way. Fair and square. Just the way he likes to play, isn’t that true, Eve?” Eve sat down. She watched Lucifer’s face trying to figure out what it’s going on. “I still… I don’t know. This all just seems… shady.” Lucifer winked. “I am shadow myself. Come on, don’t you want to see look on God’s face when we proudly walk away with a victory.” “Don’t be so sure you can win.” Eve whispered. She realized that it’s not going to end any other way. Eden is more powerful than what they have got up here and eventually God will win. It is the rule of the times. Eve couldn’t believe herself but she got up and took deep breath before announcing: “Fine. Let’s do it. Once and for all.” She grabbed Lucifers glass and emptied it within moment.   “You are doing what?” Theodor caught her coming to her room. She tried to open doors but he blocked the way. “None of your business.” “It is my business. Why the hell you think it is good idea to stick your nose inside the beast’s cave.” Eve tried to push him away but it was waste of energy. “It’s not beast cave, it’s where I am from. Also, me and your father already decided. So don’t even try.” “Since when you and Lucifer is so good buddies. He is selfish and seductive and dangerous.” “Cool you think about your dad this way, now let me go.” Eve pushed him hard and entered bedroom. Theodor followed in. “Thanks, not everybody got lucky when choosing parents.” Eve turned to him. “Oh really? You think it’s cool to be daughter of a man who wants to sentence you for lifetime and calls the army on her?” Theodor face changed into very confused. He seemed not really catching up with her. “Are you trying to say, that God is your father? Like the real God? Wasn’t you created from Adam’s rib or what’s so ever?” Eve laughed ironically. She fell on her bed powerless. “Read more of those fairy tales, they say it’s good for the creative thinking.” She finally answered. Just now she noticed little shinning stars on her celling. It was her favorite activity back in days. To count stars in the black night’s sky. “I like starry nights. You rarely see them here, but they let me believe that magic exists.” Said Theodor joining her. Eve raised her eyebrow. “I mean like real pure magic. Not dark spells and curses.” Theodor sighed. “I wish it was real.” “This castle keeps more than one dirty dark secret, Eve. Don’t be one who is going to add to it.” He spoke after a while. “I think I have already. You know....” Eve whispered. Stars on the ceiling shined just like real ones. It somehow was clear that Lucifer owned this idea. Terrifying feeling that he knew she’s going to like this, but also a pleasant effort. “This castle, it is fed by our sins, guilt, dirt of thoughts. You wouldn’t be affected by the curse if you were enough light on the God’s scales. And it wouldn’t hold you in if you truly feel sorry for them and receive forgiveness.” Theodor spoke silently, like he was scared walls would hear him and tell on him. “But the thing is with the human beings, that we are naturally sinners and we never truly regret.” Eve felt exhausted from all the information she had been receiving today. She closed her eyes for a moment and listened to Theodor breathing. It was surprisingly making her calm down and feel safe. In a moment she was already sleeping. Theodor turn his eyes from the starry ceiling decorations and watched seven hundred years old and yet young and beautiful girl sleep.
