Even though Abby couldn't see her face, she was sure she had suddenly turned pale while staring at Finn La Corja, who was now also staring at her with narrowed eyes. Obviously, he recognized her.
"What are you waiting for, Abby? Go up on stage and give Mr. La Corja the flower bouquet," Abby heard their manager instruct her. But she couldn't move her feet. She felt rooted to the spot.
"It seems Miss Abby Evangelista's knees hurt, so she can't go up on stage," Finn said seriously.
Abby was surprised to learn that Finn La Corja knew her. But how did he know her name? He didn't just know her name but her full name.
"What the heck are you doing, Abby?" their manager scolded her again when she approached her. "If you don't get on stage, you won't have a job tomorrow."
Abby swallowed at their manager's threat. She couldn't afford to lose her job. She was already embarrassed to her friend because ever since she started living in her house, Mavi had been paying for all her needs, especially her kids.
"Y-Yes, M-Miss Cornejo." Abby slightly cursed in her mind because she suddenly stuttered. She never stuttered in front of their manager. Even though Miss Cornejo was strict and intimidating, she wasn't afraid of her. She wasn't scared of her as long as she wasn't doing anything wrong.
Abby tried to compose herself. She took a deep breath before walking up the stage, even though her knees were slightly shaking. Many things were running through her mind, so she wasn't focused on where she was stepping. And because she wasn't focused on her steps, she suddenly made a mistake stepping on the last step of the stairs. She thought it wasn't the last step yet.
Abby suddenly lost her balance and almost fell down the stairs. Even though the stairs were only four steps high, it would still hurt if she fell. But thanks to the strong arm that immediately pulled her by the waist, her fall was prevented.
Abby was about to thank the person who helped her, but she suddenly swallowed her tongue when she saw that it was Finn La Corja who had pulled her. She just stood like a fool, staring at Finn's face and unable to speak.
"Are you okay?"
Abby suddenly came to her senses and returned to reality when she heard Finn's cold voice. She slightly pushed him and took a step back away from the man.
"I'm sorry for my clumsiness, Mr. La Corja," Abby apologized with a blushing face. She congratulated herself for not cracking her voice when she spoke to him.
"Why is your body shaking?" Finn asked her again with a furrowed brow when he noticed the slight trembling of her body.
"Maybe I'm just hungry," she quickly made an excuse. But she winced slightly when she realized that her reason might not be believable.
"Are you sure that was the reason why your body is shaking? Maybe there's another reason," Finn said as if implying something with his words.
Abby couldn't speak and just stared at the handsome yet serious face of their new CEO. Did he really remember that she was the woman he had a one-night stand with and signed a contract marriage with before?
"What are you waiting for, Abby? Just give the flower to Mr. La Corja and come down now!" the manager firmly ordered Abby.
Abby gasped as she remembered that she hadn't given the flower bouquet to Finn yet. "Flowers for you. From the entire staff of La Corja Empire." Abby quickly handed the flowers to Finn and immediately stepped down from the stage.
"How shameless! She seduced Mr. La Corja in front of many people," Abby heard Bambi's remark about her as she passed by. The woman was one of the senior designers in their department. From the start of her work at La Corja, she felt that Bambi didn't like her. Bambi had a heavy heart towards her even though she wasn't doing anything wrong with her.
Abby didn't want to draw attention again, so she decided to let Bambi's words pass. She went to the corner and quietly listened to Finn La Corja's speech. After a few moments, everyone applauded, and then the meal began.
After getting food from the buffet table, Abby brought her plate to the table. She chose a table far from the crowd and meant for two people only. She didn’t want to join her co-workers' table because she was embarrassed about what happened earlier. She was certain that she would become the topic of everyone's conversation.
She had just finished eating when three of her co-workers approached her, one of them was Bambi.
"Why are you alone, Abby? Are you expecting Mr. La Corja to join your table and talk to you? Do you think you succeeded in seducing him earlier?" Bambi asked with a mocking smirk. Her two sidekicks laughed and insultingly looked her up and down from head to toe.
"She probably thinks Mr. La Corja will be attracted to her. She thinks she's the most beautiful tonight," Anna said, then smirked at her.
Abby stood up from her seat and then took out a coin and placed it in Bambi's palm.
"What's this?" Bambi asked Abby with a frown.
"One peso. Buy someone you can talk to. I don't have time to talk to people like you girls," Abby replied with a teasing smile before turning her back on them. And to annoy the three even more, she walked away swaying her hips.
Abby wasn't talking to anyone and was getting bored, so she decided to just go home. It's more enjoyable to eat at home with her twins than at a party where the food is delicious but she can hardly swallow it.
Because of what happened on stage, Abby earned the annoyance of almost all the female employees of La Corja Empire. Like Bambi, they also thought that she intentionally almost fell to have a chance to seduce their new CEO.
Abby was already in front of the elevator and just waiting for the door to open when suddenly a man stood beside her. However, she didn't bother to glance at him.
"Why did you leave the party so early? Are you avoiding a particular person?" The man who stood next to Abby spoke, and she almost ran away when she saw that it was Finn La Corja who had approached her.
When the elevator opened, Finn immediately pulled Abby inside. He did this so the young woman couldn't escape from him. Because he noticed that she was avoiding him earlier.
"Do you need something from me, Mr. La Corja?" Abby forced her voice to be casual even though, in truth, she felt like her voice was about to crack. Her heart was pounding like beating a drum.
Finn's eyes narrowed before he pushed Abby and pinned her against the wall of the elevator. "Do you really not recognize me or are you just playing dumb, my dear wife?"
