Davina
Fuck! f**k! f**k! I am running late! I woke up late and my daughter was now having some complications. Of course, today out of all days, it would happen to me. I texted Kevin
*Hey sorry about yesterday but I really need you. Melody was having some seizures last night and I woke up late. Is there anyway you can give me a ride? *
*No need to apologize. You did nothing wrong. How’s Mel is she okay? Does she need to go to the hospital? *
*No, she’s fine, they were minor but I can tell she’s a bit out of it, so I told Kayla to make sure she takes her meds at her scheduled time and just watch her*
*Are you sure that’s best? I’m not doubting your parent abilities but, is that really the best thing? There will be other opportunities Vina*
*Yes please I really want this, and I know she’s fine. I was up most of the night watching her and she was fine once I made sure she was properly taken care of*
*Okay, I’m on my way*
I got myself ready as fast as I could. I decided just on some regular slacks that weren’t ruined at the diner, found myself an okay button up shirt and a light cardigan. I just decided on a slick bun that was able to control my waves. I got Mel’s bag, my purse, phone and headed next door. It was now 7:45 when I knocked.
Kayla opened to a frantic me and a sleeping Mel over my shoulder.
“What happened to 7:15?”
“Another episode last night. I am exhausted and I overslept but she’s good now. Her medication is in her bag, and she took some this morning. So, she would be needing her next dose by almost when I get off. I got everything she needs; she hasn’t eaten breakfast yet and I know she’s probably going to be overwhelmed once she…”
“Davina, girly it’s okay. I got her don’t stress, go get it at your new job. I promise she will be fine.” Kayla interrupted my ramble since I was so worried about her. She gave the reassurance I needed. I gave her a big hug and made my way downstair. Walking out I see Kevin’s jeep waiting for me. I hopped in and gave him a sad smile.
“Hey you don’t have to do this. It won’t make you a bad person.”
“I know but this is the only opportunity that has been given to me and I don’t want to ruin my chances.” I said almost about to cry. It’s so hard being a single mom and not having much support. Kevin reached his hand out to grab mine to give me comfort.
“Hey it’s okay. For what it’s worth, you’re doing a fantastic job with everything. I think you’re amazing and don’t ever doubt yourself. From now on just call me if you need a ride.”
I nodded and he then made our way to my new job. I thanked him and gave him the tightest hug to show my appreciation. He has truly been the greatest supporter of everything.
“Remember you are going to be great. Don’t stress on it.” He said as he held onto my cheeks. I nodded and tried the smile the best I could so I could convince him I was going to be alright. He kissed my forehead, and I got out of his Jeep. I made my way inside. He waved from the window, and I waved back as he drove away.
looked around the front area of the college and I can tell that everything looked outdated and needed a makeover. I heard someone walking up to me and it was an older man that looked well in his 50s. He had hair surrounding the sides of his head but nothing on top. He was about 5’11 and wasn’t too overweight. He reached out his hand to me and said “Good morning, you must Davina, yes? My name is Malcolm Perry, and I am the campus Dean here at TEC. Welcome!”
“Good morning, yes I’m Davina and it is nice to meet you.” His eyes were gentle, and I can tell he had a kind personality.
“Come, lets sit in my office and I will cover a few things with you.” He directed me to an office that was by the front door of the campus. I took a seat in one of the chairs that was placed in front of his desk, and he sat in his office chair.
“So the position of engagement coordinator is quite simple. You are going to be our first contact, directing students and prospective students to the proper people to get the information or help they need. If that person is not available at that time, just look at their calendar and schedule them down when they’re open. If there is an investor that is wanting to take partnership in our college, you will be the one to give them a tour and scheduling them with me. I will give you access to my calendar as well. You are also responsible for keeping up with decorations such as specific holidays. Just in reality, keep the front area clean. You will be working closely with Itze which is our Admissions Advisor. Does that all make sense?”
I nodded my head even though that was a lot of information to take in at once. I smiled to give him the answer that I took it all and was ready to begin when we heard a knock at the door. He waved someone in and a small dark skin woman with long straight black hair came in. I was staring at her eyes since they were so light blue, they almost looked grey.
“Itze! Come on in, this is Davina, our new engagement coordinator.”
“OMG! Welcome! I am so excited to be working with you!” She said with so much energy.
I shook her hand and said I was excited to start.
“Itze, do me a favor and show her around the campus. I have a meeting with someone here in a bit.”
“Sure, thing Malcolm. Come on Davina, I will give you the grand tour.” We made our way out as Malcolm got a webcam meeting set up with others.
“So, as you can see, this is the front area where you’ll be at. We’re standing in the waiting room, and I know there’s this random window where there is a nook space, that’s your space or office whatever you would like to call it.” I looked over and there was a door that led to a space where a desk was placed, a phone, an empty bookshelf that was placed in the corner, computer with dual monitors, filing cabinets, and an office chair right in front of the desk. The desk was placed against the wall where the window was located at that faced the front door. I was already in love with my tiny space, I was beginning to think of what I could bring to make my area much more comfortable.
