Beep! Beep! Beep!
The rhythm flowed softly, echoing through the hallways. Katherine lay on crisp white sheets, her eyes closed.
Her arm was connected to an IV tube which connected fluids into her body and her arm was tapped to prevent the medication from flowing out.
Katherine soon flinched and a scale seemed to have fallen off her eyes. She blinked her eyes once, twice, and then more repeatedly as she tried to gain her bearings.
She was confused and disoriented as she tried to make sense of what was happening to her.
The smell of fluid and medicine made her realize that she was in a hospital. How long had she been there? What happened to her? She asked herself inwardly.
Katherine was soon met by a bright light shone into her eyes. She saw a female dressed in blue scrubs just behind the flashlight. The nurse slightly shook her head suggesting that she was satisfied with the visual examination.
Katherine’s memory was blurry but she was beginning to get little pieces of what led her to the hospital.
“Ma’am, can you…” She uttered, in an attempt to ask the nurse how she got to the hospital but the words hung in her throat. She was too weak, anyway.
“Shhh,” the nurse hushed her with a smile on her face. “Ms. Moore, your body is still very tired and you need rest.”
She soon remembered what happened. Of course, it had to be that bastard - Lincoln Moore. The same one who humiliated her by bringing another woman to her matrimonial home and watched as she got her clothes thrown in the mud by her.
There was a raging feeling within and she felt like a fool but her mind flashed to something that was most important.
“My baby, how is my baby? Did you run tests? Did something happen to my baby?” Katherine asked when she remembered exactly what must have gotten her into the hospital. She was trembling with fear and felt her chest tight.
“Relax, Ms. Moore,” the nurse said, trying to calm her down.
“You suffered a huge blow but all the tests have shown that your baby is healthy,” she assured.
“Oh! Thank goodness,” Katherine heaved a sigh of relief. At least, she wasn't going to lose everything.
“You are very lucky though. You had very serious injuries to your head, torso, and pelvis. Most people would not have survived not even to talk of getting to keep your baby. Consider yourself lucky Ma’am.”
Katherine gave a tiny, relieved smile but a lot was still going through her mind. She struggled to accept that it was over with Lincoln. She had the most horrible life wallowing in prison because of her husband but she was in hospital because of the same man. Who knows where she would find herself next?
The nurse broke her train of thought. “You will now need to rest for the rest of the day and we can discharge you tomorrow.”
With a forced smile on her face, she continued, “In the meantime, you had a visitor a few hours ago but she left because according to her, she had more important issues to deal with. I couldn't tell what exactly her motive was but at least she is gone now so no worries right?”
Katherine gripped the bed sheet tightly, her breathing quickened as she started darting around the room. “Who is she? Where did she go? Did she tell you her name?”
She hoped that it wasn't who she thought it was.
“Erm, relax Ms. Moore. I hope this doesn't create a problem. She is gone now so I don't think there should be a problem. She mentioned her name as Electra Moore so my instincts said she must be your sister.”
“What?!” Katherine shook her head in disgust. Her step-sister was already claiming to be a Moore. She was out for blood and determined to displace her, she reasoned.
“She dropped an envelope as well and told me to give it to you when you are awake. She says you just have to sign it and everything will be okay.”
Katherine started sweating on her forehead and her breathing became rapid. She could tell that it was the same divorce agreement that she wanted her to sign. She didn't care about her physical state or if she had lost her baby. All Electra wanted was for her to sign the divorce so that she could have Lincoln all to herself.
Katherine’s face turned red. A woman who was supposed to be in handcuffs still had the guts to threaten her to sign a divorce agreement.
She thought of requesting an amount as alimony. Perhaps Lincoln shouldn't have to get rid of her so easily. Maybe she should sue him for damages. She could even expose him and his family by revealing to the press that Lincoln bribed her to take the fall for the Ponzi offenses.
But to hell with him. To hell with Electra too, she thought. She knew that she deserved much better.
“Can I have the papers please?” She asked the nurse, her jaw set in determination as she looked fierce.
Even the nurse flinched at the sudden strength that seemed to have mounted on Katherine’s limbs as she asked for a pen.
“Here you go,” the nurse uttered, handing her a multi-colored pen.
Katherine clutched the pen tightly and ran through the document with her eyes blazing with fury.
“To hell with you, Lincoln,” she muttered under her breath.
