~ Allison’s POV ~
My mouth nearly fell open at the sheer amount of paperwork everywhere. There were piles upon piles of files on a desk, at least I think that is a desk under the paperwork. There were so many files, that there were piles that had to be placed on the floor next to the desk. Yikes. I wanted to ask Alpha Malachi how he had let it get so bad, but that seemed rude, so I just asked what he wanted me to do first instead.
Alpha Malachi went into another room that was connected to his office by a door and started to make phone calls. I just stared at the mounds of paperwork for a moment before deciding to go through the stuff on the floor first. I did as Alpha Malachi asked and sorted the files into groups first. I used the large room to spread out everything on the floor. When I was done with that, the room looked worse than before, but at least it was now organized into piles. I had a pile of purchasing requests that Alpha Malachi needed to approve. I went ahead and organized them by the date that they were requested with the oldest requests on top.
I lightly knocked on the door and waited for Alpha Malachi’s response. “Come in,” he said. I entered with the stack of files that needed to be approved. “Alpha, all of these files have purchasing requests that need to be approved. I put them in order by request date. The oldest is on the top. Where do you want them?” He pointed to a spot on the desk in the room, so I placed the files there. “Thank you, Allison. Did you need anything else?” said Alpha Malachi. I shook my head no and went back to work on the files.
I started entering the reports. I had sorted them by the person that had made the report. I decided to start with the Beta’s reports, because he had the most reports. As I looked over the files on the computer I realized that there wasn’t really any organization to the reports that were entered into the computer. All of the reports were just entered into one giant folder named ‘Reports’. I decided to add more folders to sort the reports. I spent almost an hour just sorting all of the reports into different folders. The first folders inside of the folder named ‘Reports’ now had folders for each person that had filled out a report. Inside each of their folders were more folders labeled with the appropriate month and year of the report. As I was organizing the files on the computer, someone entered the room.
“Ahem,” I heard from a familiar high-pitched tone. I looked up to see Stephanie standing in front of me. “I see that you have made yourself comfy in the Alpha’s office. If I were you I would clean up this mess before he sees it.” She said with a snarl.
“Can I help you Samantha?” I asked, purposefully getting her name wrong.
“Uh, my name is Stephanie, not Samantha!” She said angrily. “I am here to see the Alpha, is he here?”
“I am sorry Stephanie, but the Alpha is busy at the moment and he doesn’t want to be disturbed.”
“I am sure that he will want to see me, so let me by.” she stated huffing at me. I stood in her way, blocking her path to the door that lead to Alpha Malachi.
“I am so sorry Stephanie, but the Alpha has given me strict orders that he is not to be disturbed by anyone except for the Beta. I would hate for you to go in there and have him get angry at you because he said no interruptions. I can let him know that you stopped by if you want.” I said with the sweetest voice possible.
She looked like she was thinking about it for a bit before she spat, “You had better let him know that I stopped by, and that I want to talk to him.” She turned around and stormed off. I just shook my head at her and got back to work.
Once I was satisfied with the organization of the computer files, I opened a couple of the files to see how they had been formatted in the past. To my surprise there was no real organization to the report. It looked like someone had just quickly typed in the information. There was no way of being able to quickly look for the information. I decided to open an excel document and to format a page that made it easier to find the information from the report quickly. I made a form similar to what I remembered that my dad used for his reports. The top of the page had spots for: name of person filling report, date of incident, date report made, and names of pack members involved. Then below that was a spot for the incident. After I made a blank document for the reports, it made things go by quickly.
As I was finishing the reports by the Beta, a couple of pack members came in arguing about something. They were two of the warriors that I had sparred with yesterday. They looked a little confused to see me in the Alpha’s office.
“Hi guys, I am helping the Alpha out with his paperwork today. What can I do for you?”
“Um, is the Alpha here. We have a dispute that we can’t settle and he usually helps with disputes.” said one of the warriors.
“Unfortunately, the Alpha is very busy today, and has ordered that he not be disturbed by anyone. He is making a lot of important phone calls, and I would hate for him to get angry with you for interrupting.” Both of the warriors looked slightly scared at the mention of the Alpha getting angry, then disappointed that he wouldn’t be able to help. “I used to help with disputes in my old pack. Maybe I can help. What is the dispute about?”
The two warriors thought about it for a moment before one of them spoke up. “I have been taking all of the night watch shifts lately, and I have been missing spending time with my mate. I asked the Beta if I could get a few nights off, and he told me to have Caleb switch shifts with me for the next week. When I went to tell him what the Beta said, he refused to switch shifts with me. Normally we would talk with the Beta, but he is busy with the prisoners today.”
I thought about it for a moment and asked, “Caleb, why don’t you want to switch shifts with Nathan?”
Caleb responded, “I have a mate too, I shouldn’t have to give up my evening time with her just because he misses his mate.”
I then asked, “Caleb, how long have you known your mate?”
Caleb responded confused with, “Two years…”
I turned to Nathan, “Nathan, how long have you known your mate?”
Nathan responded with, “About three weeks.”
I thought for a moment. “I see, Caleb, can you put yourself in Nathan’s shoes for a moment? Try to remember what it was like when you first met your mate. Do you think that you would have been okay with spending the first few weeks of knowing each other working the evening shift?”
I could see that Caleb knew where this was going. He quietly said, “No, but…”
I interrupted him, “No buts. All Nathan is asking is that you switch shifts for one week, so that he can spend some much needed time with his mate. I know that means that you won’t be able to spend as much time with your mate, but it is only for one week. Do you think that you can handle the evening shift for one week?”
Caleb thought about it for a moment, and reluctantly said, “I guess I can work the night shift for one week.”
Nathan’s face lit up and he said, “Thank you so much!”
As they left I heard something behind me. I turned around and there was Alpha Malachi smirking at me. I gulped and quickly said, “I was just helping them with a dispute. I hope that I didn’t cross a line, because you mentioned that you didn’t want to be disturbed.”
He chuckled, “It is alright, I am quite impressed by your peace making skills. I probably would have just told Caleb to suck it up and to follow orders, but I like your way too.” I let out a sigh of relief. “It’s past lunchtime, let’s take a break and go get some food.” I nodded in agreement. I had realized how hungry I was until now.
