Chapter 17 - Her whole body on fire

2795 Words
Elaine stood in the doorway, all pale. I saw her two frightened eyes searching the room for someone familiar. Cassian came to her side in one swift movement, then put his arm around her shoulders and helped her to hold her in place. "Sarah, where is Sarah?" Elaine looked around the room with frightened eyes. I jumped out of bed instantly. I didn't care that I was alone in my underwear at the moment. I moved quickly towards Elaine, wanting her to see me before her eyes. I saw droplets of sweat gathering little by little on her forehead. Finally, her slightly white eyes rested on me. My hand reached for the light switch on the wall. I wanted to get a better look at what was wrong with her. "Elaine, what's wrong with you? Cassian put her on the couch." I looked at Elaine, who didn't seem to be taking in her surroundings. "She has a fever, and her whole body is on fire." Cassian, Elaine lay down on the sofa. I picked up a pillow from the bed and put it under Elaine's head to make her feel more comfortable. I put my hand against her forehead, which was wet with sweat. Cassian hadn't lied. She was running a high fever, but what had happened to her. My eyes went to her neck, which was still tied with a black scarf. I could see the color of her sunken skin around it. My fingers lightly brushed the scarf. The sight shocked me. "Is this what I'm thinking about?" Several deep lines instantly appeared on Cassian's forehead. My eyes went to Elaine's naked neck. I could see the bite marks around which the skin was strangely bluish. Had Emmet bitten her? Why hadn't she said so earlier? "Am I going to die? Sarah, please don't let me die." Elaine's frightened eyes looked straight into mine. My mind flashed back to the horrible words I had read somewhere on the internet. A werewolf bite is fatal to a vampire. Is it true that Elaine is going to die? "Cassian, bring a cool compress, then go invite everyone here." I turned my eyes from Elaine to Cassian, who was standing nearby looking at Elaine. "Sarah, I don't -" Cassian's eyes lingered on me. "Cassian, don't waste time. Now, go." I nodded my head towards the door of the room. "Calm down, Elaine. You're not going to die. It's going to be okay." I knelt beside Elaine and stroked her sweat-damp hair. "I'm sorry for being such a terrible friend. I should have told you about the scratch. I thought it was nothing bad. He didn't bite me. He just scratched me, I..." Elaine's voice trailed off as her eyes closed. Cassian was no longer in the room. I checked Elaine's pulse with trembling hands. She seemed to have just lost consciousness. I took a quick step towards the bathroom. I grabbed the first towel as I entered, then splashed cold water on it. I hurriedly found myself back at Elaine's side, who had lost consciousness. I used the towel to wipe the sweat off her face. I looked down at Elaine's neck to take a closer look at the wound. The skin around the bite seemed to be slowly turning black and expanding. Although I know nothing about this type of problem, the injury appears to be growing rapidly. If we don't do something about it in time, she could die. Come on, Cassian, move your ass. We could use Henry's intelligent thoughts right now. I took a quick step towards my clothes, who were lying on the ground. I don't want to be naked when everyone gets here. I hurriedly put on my trousers and an oversized jumper. As soon as I turned on my heel at the room door, I could see Henry, Chloe, and David hurriedly enter the room. "What happened?" Chloe's eyes lingered on Elaine lying on the sofa. "A werewolf bite her." David squatted down beside Elaine, checking her pulse. "Henry, is there anything we can do? Tell me there's a way out?" My eyes went to Henry, who seemed to be watching the whole situation from the side. "Sarah, I'm sorry. No vampire can survive a werewolf bite. It's only a matter of time." Henry furrowed his brow, his sad gaze directed towards me. "No, no, no. Henry, tell me we can save her." Chloe's frightened eyes darted from Elaine's face to Henry standing nearby. "Sarah, maybe there's a cure in your mom's spellbook?" David's eyes darted to me. "Mom's spellbook? She didn't have one. I don't know what you're talking about, David" I wrinkled my forehead as I took a seat on the bed. "Chloe needs to call Joan. Tell her about the situation. Maybe she's seen Eira's book." David's eyes instantly darted to Chloe. "I don't think she'll be awake at this hour." Chloe pulled her cell phone out of her pocket. "Sarah, go with Cassian to the house. David and Chloe will take Elaine back to hometown. We can't waste any minute." Henry's eyes went to Cassian, who was standing at the door of the room. "Why can't she come with us?" I wrinkled my forehead as I walked briskly towards the exit of the room. " It will be safer if Chloe and David bring Elaine back. The consequences will happen when she wakes up. Elaine could start hallucinating, having seizures, fits of rage, delusions. We can't let her be in the same car with you." Henry's gaze was stern at this point. The last thing I saw before I walked through the room door was David picking Elaine up from the sofa. Cassian was already walking quite a way ahead of me. I quickened my pace to catch up with him. Seconds later, the elevator beeped, and the metal doors opened wide. I stepped into the elevator, and we were on our way to the first floor. I turned my eyes to Cassian. His face looked cold and unreadable. Most importantly, he wasn't crying in anger or throwing terrible words. I hope Elaine will be able to survive. Come on, Chloe, call me soon. I need to know if Mom's book is actually in my house. I didn't know there was such a thing as a family spellbook. If only I'd had more time with Dillan, I probably would have learned more secrets about magic. I pulled my vibrating phone out of my pocket, my best friend's name shining brightly on it. In one swift motion, I put the phone to my ear, hoping for good news. "Joan didn't pick up the phone. She's probably asleep at three in the morning. Try to go to your house. I'm sure you should find some clue there." Chloe's shaky voice sounded on the other end of the phone. "Okay. Call me when Elaine wakes up. Let me know everything that's going on. I'll call if find the spellbook." I stepped out of the elevator into the empty lobby of the hotel. "Stay on the line. We'll be in touch." Chloe's voice trailed off, and there was a beep to signal the end of the call. Cassian opened the hotel door wide, letting me through first. We walked briskly towards his car. In just a few minutes, I was sitting in the car seat with my seatbelt fastened. The car was moving at high speed. The night city flew past the window, and my thoughts were still racing. Is Elaine going to be all right? Why Emmet had done this to her, I had accepted his terms. It seems that he doesn't promise to act according to the words that he has set out. That means any of my close friends are now in enormous danger. I turned my gaze to Cassian, who was driving the car with a severe face. I couldn't see a speck of emotion on his face. I rested my head against the cold glass of the car. My thoughts were lost somewhere between Dillan and Elaine. I wished so much that my boyfriend was around right now. To tell me that everything was okay, that I didn't have to worry about everything going on around me. I miss him so damn much. My eyes drifted to the small black spot on my palm. When things calm down, I need to try to find him again. So much time seems to have passed, and we seem to be standing in one place. There is nothing but loss, deaths, and terrible events happening all around us. When will my life get back to normal? Tomorrow is my father's funeral, I might say. I will have to bury another dear one underground. I hope Elaine will not be the next person on my list of relatives. I can't even imagine finding that ill-fated spellbook that should be somewhere in my house. It might not even be there. How will Elaine be rescued then? Is she destined to die? I can't allow myself to think badly. Otherwise, I must be vital to those I love. I believed in my best friend Chloe, and that's why she was able to curb her vampire thirst, become an ordinary girl, well, almost normal. "What's that look?" Cassian's voice distracted me. "Just bad thoughts," I shrugged as my eyes darted out the car window. " Everything will be fine. We'll be able to save Elaine. You need to get some more rest. We have a long road ahead of us." Cassian's green eyes lingered on me for a moment, then returned to the road. "Do all the people around me have to suffer?" I muttered to myself somewhere under my nose. "Try to get some sleep, Sarah. I'll wake you when we get to your house." Cassian gripped the steering wheel tighter, his eyes on the road. "Do you think I'll be able to sleep? My good friend is dying on her deathbed. My boyfriend is missing. Tomorrow I have to bury my father. Do you think I can sleep?" I raised my eyebrows at Cassian with my angry eyes. "You can sit and worry about your hometown. Or you can let your brain rest. You're not a vampire that can go without sleep." Cassian didn't even bother to look at me. Maybe he's right. I should get some more sleep. Still, my rest in the hotel was not of excellent quality. I could feel my head starting to swell up little by little. Probably the residue of the alcohol was beginning to leave my system. I turned my eyes to the pose that was coming through the car window. We had already left the city limits. All that was around us was the black darkness of night. One, two, and three cars passed by on the side in the opposite direction. It's probably going to be a long road, but I can't close my eyes just yet. I felt my phone start to vibrate in my pocket. With a quick movement, I pulled it out and put it to my ear. I didn't look at the recipient. Sure it was someone important. "Hello?" I turned my gaze to Cassian, who was already looking at me from the corner of his eye. "Sarah, this is Henry. I'm staying at the hotel. Tomorrow I'll try to find out more about the missing people in this town. Chloe, David, and Elaine have just left the hotel. There's a way to cure Elaine that should be in your mother's spellbook." Henry's serious voice sounded on the other end of the phone. "Understood. I hope you'll be able to work something out without Elaine's help. Let's hope the fire doesn't happen in the next few days. We don't need any more problems. Although one thing is for sure, there will be the likes of another town before the real disaster." My eyes went to the darkness that was coming through the car window. "I just want to tell you not to get your hopes up. I spoke to David, and he confirmed that a vampire bite is fatal to a vampire. In all his life, he has never seen a vampire survive. Usually, within the first two days, the vampire starts to rot from the inside, and eventually, its heart becomes saturated." Henry's voice suddenly became quiet. "I will do everything in my power to save her. It's not like David's had to deal with Willow's witch. I won't let Elaine die so easily. I just saved her life. I'll do it again if I have to." My voice sounded confident, even though I might have doubted my words a little. "I'll call you tomorrow morning. I'll let you know how many people are still missing to make it a suitable number for the donation. I hope you'll be able to find out about the bite by then. Rest Sara. You are our only hope." A beep followed Henry's words on the phone. I put my phone back in my pocket and sighed deeply. I could feel Cassian's gaze fixed on me, but I didn't care now. All I can think about is getting Elaine home alive. I hope Joan will call Chloe back if she finds it's in a hurry. Maybe David should call Joan, that way there's a better chance that she'll pick up the phone. After all, David is Joan's son. It would be great to have time to talk to her. Then maybe she would open up about her second son, perhaps she could help calm him down, and no one else around would get hurt. It sounds like a good compromise, although I am not sure. Little by little, my gaze drifted towards the darkness of the night that was coming through the car window. Cassian's eyes keep glancing at me occasionally, but I have nothing to say to him. I know his heart is probably bleeding right now, but I don't care. There are more important things than that. "All we can do is hope that the spellbook is in your house. I know one spell that should help you detect magic in your house. " Cassian's calm voice filled the machine. "You have a spell? Why didn't you tell me about it earlier?" My head turned towards Cassian. A few lines etched themselves into my forehead. "I used to be a witch. You could say that. Of course, I have a few spells in my memory. I wasn't always a monster slayer to survive." Cassian rolled his eyes, smiling slightly. "We have a small hope in the night." I smiled as I made myself more comfortable in a car seat. "Sarah, I need to talk to you. But first, you need to rest." Cassian's gaze drifted back to the long dark road. "Sleep can wait. What do you want to talk about?" I raised my eyebrows in Cassian's direction. Although my heart was racing at the moment, my thoughts seemed to hesitate. I don't want this to be another declaration of love or feelings. Although my chest instantly became calm. I know Cassian will never dare bring the subject up again. I've hurt him too much. I'll probably never see that sensitive, talkative Cassian again. The Cassian, who shares his personal memories, talks about his dark experiences and childhood. "I'm not a wizard, but I know you need to train. Since your birth, you've forgotten everything around you, and you've thrown yourself into the search for Dillan. I want you to start practicing magic. Now that you have all the magic in your body, all you need to do is learn a few basic spells." Cassian's eyes flicked to me for a moment. "Who will teach me magic? Joan? You? We don't have a single witch who can show me how to do things right. My only teacher was Dillan. Now he's gone." My eyes turned to Cassian. "I have one suggestion, but I don't think you'll accept it." Cassian shrugged, then pressed his lips tightly together as if in doubt. "If training in magic will help me stand on my own two feet, I agree. I feel terrible being worthless in situations like with Emmet." I gave Cassian a questioning look. "You've already met that person. You just need to shake your high card a little, and you could start practicing right after Dad's funeral." Cassian gripped the steering wheel tighter with his hands. "Come on, tell me, who is this person?" I sighed deeply, raising an eyebrow, looking in Cassian's direction. "It's the girl you've hated since you first met her." Cassian threw a look in my direction. The only name I could think of was.....
