"Wait, so why did you run from him then?" Maisie asked, and honestly, I didn't know the answer to that.
Yes, you do.
With a heavy sigh, I sat up straighter in my bed and looked at an expectant Maisie. "I just didn't feel comfortable," I told her, which wasn't exactly a lie. I definitely did not feel comfortable after Jade said his dragon liked US. Us as in both her and myself.
That meant that he knew we had a dragon. My father had been sure to make me understand the dangers I would be in if people found out I had a dragon before my powers developed.
"So he took you to Royal's lounge, and you guys only talked?" She asked for what felt like the millionth time in the twenty minutes we had been talking.
With my eyebrows raised, I stared right at her. "You know, Mase, if you are just going to keep asking the same question over and over because you don't like the answer, I am just going to go to sleep." To show her I was serious, I pulled the comforter up and got under them.
"Fine." She whined. "Sorry, Elle, it's just that after that she-demon dragon ruined my chances at either of the Twins, I have to live vicariously through you."
With a light chuckle, I stretched my arm over to turn off the light to my side of the room. "Night, Mase," I whispered.
A few seconds later, I heard Maisie's sleepy voice. "Night, Elle."
I hadn't told Maisie what Malachi had said about Tabitha. Truthfully it wasn't any of her business. Hell, it wasn't any of mine either.
The uneasiness started in my stomach again.
I couldn't pinpoint why I was randomly feeling like this. I knew I was attracted to Malachi. I mean, the guy was a walking Greek god. I hadn't stared hard or long enough to find any flaws with this. I guess it's fitting, though, since he'll be King.
Go outside.
Why?
Just go.
Jade's soft voice urged me. It was already midnight. Why on earth did she want me to go outside at this time.
With a shrug, I got up from bed and walked into the closet quietly to not disturb Maisie.
Grabbing a pair of jean shorts and a black hoodie, I put them on. Then quietly grabbed my sandals and walked out of the room.
It wasn't until I was out of the girl's dorm that I realized I had left my phone charging. "Well shit." I cussed to myself, standing a few feet from the doors to the dorm.
"Colorful vocabulary you seem to have there." A deep male voice rang out, wrapping itself around me like a warm blanket. Turning to my right, I came face to face with none other than Malachi.
I gave him a small smile and shrugged. I am not too sure what he wanted me to say. I cussed a lot, and it took a whole lot of work and practice to keep it at a minimum.
"What are you doing out here, little bird?" I couldn't help raising an eyebrow at the name he called me.
"Little bird?" I asked
His chuckle was deep and vibrated around me. It was then I knew I wanted to make him laugh as much as possible. It was the most soothing sound I had ever heard in my sixteen years.
"Yeah." He said, looking down at the ground. "You fly away from me every chance you get." His eyes looked up and met mine.
I smiled softly at him. Little bird, I wouldn't say I liked the reason why he gave me the nickname, but I have to admit to myself at least that it gave me all the butterflies.
"I don't do it on purpose, you know, the first time I was running late for class."
"And the second?" He asked.
I just stared at him, his sapphire eyes never looking away from my face. I couldn't tell him I ran because I freaked out when he said he wanted me to know him. That I panicked because I am attracted to him and the whole he's the future King, and I am nothing more than a halfling.
So I settled for answering him with a shrug. Amusement flitted in his eyes, and he raised his right arm out towards me, hand open and palm up. "Come, let's go for a walk," he said.
Without giving myself a chance to overthink, I reached my arm out and placed my hand into his awaiting one.
He began to walk me behind the area where the dormitories were, towards the sea wall. That area was used a lot by students for running.
"You said walk right, not run." I looked over at him nervously.
Rich laughter rang out throughout the lawn. "I take it you don't like running," Malachi asked, amusement clear on his face.
"Not unless it's important. Like my life is on the line, and even then, it's questionable."
"So running to the class that morning was a one-time thing?"
I nodded vigorously as he continued to laugh. I couldn't help but smile. The amusement on his face and his laughter were contagious. A small giggle escaped my lips.
Before I knew it, Malachi had stopped walking, still holding on to my hand. "Don't fly away, little bird." He said in a low whisper, barely audible.
His free hand grabbed the back of my neck and pulled me towards him. My eyes widened slightly at that, and before I could register that he was leaning towards me, Malachi placed his lips on mine.
He was kissing me!
