Long Road

{Maisie’s POV} “We have a lot to discuss before this is over.” Mikey said, turning to Angelo. Angelo stood up, walking over to me, he leaned down, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my head. “And we will, just not here, and not now. For now, we all just need to focus on Max, and Silas.” He said, kissing the top of my head softly. Margo stood up, grabbing my hands and smiling at me. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for us.” She said. I shook my head. “No, thank you guys for everything you’ve done for me. I haven’t felt this okay in years.” I smiled softly, and soon the doctor that I had seen in the operating room came out. “Family of Silas LaRoux?” He said, looking over the waiting room. “That’s us!” Enzo said, stepping forward. The doctor walked over, nodding down to me. “You’re with them then?” He asked, shooting me a glance. I nodded, and he smiled softly. “She is the one who told us to check the visceral surface of his liver again. We had already checked everywhere and couldn’t find the bleed. There was so much blood in his abdominal cavity that it was nearly impossible to see. If it weren’t for her, we may not have found it in time.” He said, proudly putting his hand on my shoulder. “Thank you.” Enzo ran to me, pulling me into a hug. “Thank you Maisie, thank you for helping my bambino!” He said, his body was shaking as he pulled back looking down at me. “If there is anything I can do for you, all you have to do is ask!” He said, before turning back to the doctor and shaking his hand. “The same goes for you, doctor, anything!” “Thank you, Mr. LaRoux. I want you to know, we did everything we could for your son. We repaired his spine, he had two breaks in his lumbar vertebrae, and both of his legs were broken in multiple places. His right arm was also broken in four different places. It took some time to get all of his bones set, but we were able to get everything set and he is in multiple casts. The biggest issue is he lost a lot of blood, he had to have two blood transfusions, which is nearly enough to replace all of the blood in his body.” He paused, flipping open the chart. “There is also the issue with the swelling around his spine. As of right now, your son is paralyzed from the waist down. There is a high chance that once the swelling goes down, he will regain feeling, but he will be in severe pain until he heals. There is also the issue of his legs being broken so severely. He more than likely won’t be able to walk for six months, up to a year.” He said, sighing heavily. “I’m sorry, I wish it were better news, but he’s looking at a very long road of recovery.” “A steady stream of medications, physical therapy, and even regular therapy will help him a lot in the future. If it’s okay with you sir, I’d like to offer any assistance I can in the matter.” I said, smiling softly at Enzo. “Yes, thank you Maisie, and thank you Doctor!” Enzo said, shaking the doctor’s hand again. “When can we see my son?” “As soon as he comes out of the anesthesia I will come get you, and take you back to his room.” The doctor said, before turning back to me. “You know, if you’d like a job here, I’d be more than happy to put in a good word for you.” I can’t believe this was happening, this was one of the best hospitals in the area. I applied here twice when I first moved here. “Really?” I asked, a little shell shocked. He nodded. “You are a doctor right? You carry yourself as one, and I know they usually wouldn’t let anyone but medical students or staff into the operating theater.” He replied calmly. “Yes, Maisie, Doctor Maisie Wilson.” I said, shaking his hand. “I’m Doctor Vincent McCrane.” He said, shaking my hand in return. “Send over your resume, I’m going to personally see to it that you get hired on here.” He said, turning and walking away. “Doctor Maisie Wilson..” Angelo snickered, I turned to look at him. “What’s so funny?” I asked, shooting up one eyebrow at him. “I’ve never heard you be so formal is all!” He chuckled. “Thank you, you’ve saved my family more times than I can count right now.” He said, leaning down and kissing my forehead. I shook my head. “Angelo, of course I’m going to help anytime I can. I’m a doctor, and I.. I care about you, and your family. You’ve all been so kind to me.” I smiled up at him softly. “Plus, I know how awful Silas is going to feel when he wakes up.. being unable to walk.. it’s hard on not only your body, but your mind.” I said, looking down at my feet. “Anything I can do to help him, and to help you guys, count me in.” “Thank you, again!” He said, before turning to his father and brothers. “Alright, we should begin devising some plans on how to best get Silas the care he needs at home.” He said. The group of men sat down together, and began chatting about how many nurses to hire, how best to set up a place for his physical therapy, and other details like that. Margo grabbed my arm, leading me away from the group of men. “What did you mean by that?” She asked, looking over me worriedly. “By what?” I asked, honestly a bit confused. “About not being able to walk.. Maisie.. did something like that happen to you?” She asked. I nodded. “When he found out I was pregnant.. he beat me so severely.. both of my legs were broken, my spine had some nerve damage. I was in a wheelchair for months.” I sighed. “It was hard on my mental state.. and I had a hard time coping with the loss of my baby, along with the loss of my legs. I felt like I lost all of my joy, and what little freedom I did have.”
