I typed out quickly, “Heather, you’ll never guess who came in today!”
“To the hospital? Who?” She asked, with five questions marks behind the who.
I chuckled to myself before typing. “The guy from the club, the one that paid for our stuff!”
“Seriously? He just showed up? Did you ki** him? I know how much you hate a man that can’t take no for an answer!” She said, adding a devil emoji.
“No, I didn’t ki** him! I’m a doctor, I think that kinda goes against not only my job, but my morals..” I giggled, continuing. “His brother came in, he’d gotten hurt and I had to stitch him up. He came in looking for his brother. He’s really protective of him, it’s kinda sweet.”
“Oooh! You like him!” She jeered, acting as though we were teens again.
“Oh stop it!” I typed, laughing to myself, I probably seemed insane to anyone around, but at this point I didn’t care. It felt good to be happy again, to laugh again. “He’s just, nice..”
“Don’t forget nice to look at! That man is fine!” She typed, sending four fire emojis.
“Why are you, the way you are?” I laughed. “I’ve got to get back to work, but I’ll talk to you later.” I said, placing my phone back into my pocket.
I stood up, making my way back around to each room, and I noticed that Angelo and Mikey were still in their room. I knocked on the doorway, and stepped in. “You guys are free to go whenever you’re ready.” I smiled, looking between the two of them.
Mikey stood up, walking over to me. “I was just wanting to know if I could get your number, or your work extension, just in case I have any questions, or in case something happens. I’d hate to come in if it’s nothing.” He said, smiling down at me.
I nodded. “Yeah, sure, I’ll give you both, that way if you can’t reach me on one, you should be able to on the other. I’m on call normally throughout the week, and I usually have the weekends off.” I grabbed a piece of paper, and wrote down my cell phone number, and my work extension, handing it to him. “Only call if it’s an emergency! If it begins to look strange, feel free to send a picture of it, and I’ll let you know if you should come back in.” I smiled. Looking to Angelo who was watching every move I made.
“Thank you doc!” Mikey said, taking the paper and placing it in his pocket. “I will let you know if something changes or I get worried about it. Thanks for everything!” He said, walking past me out of the room.
Angelo stood up, following behind Mikey, he stopped in the doorway. “Thank you Maisie, I owe you.” He said, a small smirk spreading across his lips.
I felt a blush creep across my face, and all I could do was turn away. “N-No problem..” I said, beginning to clean up the room.
I heard his footsteps walking away, and let out a sigh of relief. I couldn’t believe that someone I just met could make me feel this way, but here I am acting like a lovesick school girl. I rolled my eyes at myself, I’m such a ridiculous person. I cleaned up the room, and finished my rounds for the day. I saw about twenty more people before my day was over, and by the time I clocked out I was exhausted.
I stepped outside, walking towards my car when I heard something fall over in the alley near the hospital. “H-Hello?” I asked, looking around. I couldn’t see anything back here, it was too dark. I turned, running to my car and jumping in. I locked the doors and immediately started my car. I went to back up, and a fist collided with my car window. I looked up to see Doctor Reggie, his eyes were red, and glazed over, he was drunk. Another swing at my window had it crashing in, I screamed as glass sliced across my cheek, and his fist collided with my left eye. I slammed on the gas pedal driving backwards and backing up. Once I had backed up and gotten him out of the way, I switched my gear to drive and took off, driving as quickly as I could to get home.
Once home I ran from my car to the door, unlocking it and running inside. Tears beginning to prick in my eyes. Men! Men like that! Drunk, moronic men! My body was shaking with adrenaline, panic coursing through me, as Heather ran around the corner peaking at me. “Hey, how was your day!” She asked, freezing when she made eye contact with me. “Maisie! What the he** happened?” She asked, running to my side and pulling me towards the couch.
She sat me down and ran to grab a rag, it wasn’t until she touched it to my cheek that I realized that I was cut pretty badly. I hissed at the pain, and when she pulled the rag away I could see blood soaking the part that touched my face. “D-Doctor Reggie.. he was drunk.. he.. he busted up my window..” I said, I felt my phone buzzing and looked down. It was an unknown number, and a video call.
I was in autopilot when I answered, and I could hear Mikey on the other end. “Hey doc.. I’m sorry to call like this, but Marco can’t figure out how to put the bandages on properly.. and I..” I watched, as he froze when he saw me.
Panicked I sat the phone down flat on the table. “Um.. you have to wrap it around the top of the shoulder, and back under the armpit..” I began, but Mikey cut me off.
“Doc.. who did that to your face?” He asked, his voice oozing a deadly venom.
“What do you mean Mikey?” I could hear Angelo’s soothing voice on the other end of the call.
“I-It’s nothing, now will you listen to what I’m telling you!” I said, my voice obviously still panicked. I couldn’t stop though, my adrenaline was pumping, my body shaking. I was still afraid, even though I had gotten away.
“Maisie.. pick up the phone.” Angelo’s voice was calm, but deadly, he was serious, but I was still too shaken up to really move.
“It was a doctor she works with! He’s been bugging her since she started there. She said that he was waiting for her outside the hospital, he was drunk and punched through her car window!” Heather said, picking up the phone. “I told her to report him months ago for se**** harassment, but she didn’t want to cause a fuss because she’s newer than he is.”
“Let me see.” Angelo said, his tone still deadly. She turned the camera toward me, I only knew because of the growl I heard emit from him. I couldn’t bear to look at myself, or him.
“I-I’m fine..” I whimpered out. “Now.. Mikey just needs to..” I began but Mikey’s frantic voice cut me off.
“Angelo, where are you going?” He asked, before I heard a door slam.
“I-I have to get this cleaned up.. just wrap it from your shoulder, to armpit, all the way around a few times, don’t forget to use gauze, and the cream I prescribed you. Make sure to take the meds I gave you!” I said, quickly hanging up the phone.
