Chapter 22

Laura's POV

When I told him about what was said, I didn't think he would be so upset about it. I mean, I could have asked LeeAnn to push the ball back for a few months. I'm sure she would understand that. But Jasper insisted on talking to the man, so we went to look for him. I pointed him out; he was the one cutting wood with the others. It turns out that the leader's wife went into labor with twins, and he ended up putting him in charge. He didn’t like being in charge and then he didn't know I was Jasper's mate and the Luna of the pack. He thought I was just another female working on something. I wanted to laugh so hard, but I didn't. I couldn't stop thinking about how this poor guy just got into trouble, and now he's scared shitless about messing up. Jasper pulled me by the hand to another room and asked if I wanted to go on a date with him. My heart was beating so hard that I had to calm it down. If I didn’t, I was sure he would hear it. I told him to give me a few hours, and I would be ready. So, I hurried to my room to shower. I took my time to wash my hair and everything else. When I was done, I rinsed off and cut off the water, reaching for a towel. I decided to do a bun in my hair, letting some hair fall down beside my face, and I curled it up. When I finished, I sat down to do some makeup. I wasn't sure where he was taking me, so I decided to dress up a little. I picked out a nice strapless dress with a slit on the side that went up to my hip. I wore matching shoes and picked out a bag that went with it. I slipped on some jewelry and decided to wear something that he might notice, like the clip in my hair that he gave me. It once belonged to his mother and was handed down from Luna to Luna. Now, it belonged to me until I stepped down. So I'm going to wear it and see if he notices. This is my way of letting him know I have my memory back. I was about to step out of my room when the Moon Goddess appeared to me.

“You know, now is not the time to let him know you have your memory back. He's going to want you to come home and be with him. I know that's what you want to do, am I correct? You can't do that right now, honey, not when we are so close to getting your powers. You have the power of finding out if someone is telling the truth; you can control the earth, set fires with your mind, and soon learn how to look into the future. However, you cannot go back to him right now. Do I need to take your memory again? Even the higher-ups are freaking out there, the ones who sent me to you. Either you keep quiet about this, or you will lose the war, a war that is going to be hard. She’s coming soon, Laura, and you have to be ready,” she? Who is she? She left before I could even ask her who she is. Damn it, I took out the clip in my hair, I had to fix a few hairs, and then I was done. f**k, I made this choice, and I need to stick with it. Walking over to my nightstand, I opened it up, placed the clip inside, then closed it. I knew he would be up any second now. I was starting to get nervous. I could mess everything up, and who is the she that Selena was talking about?

“Alright, Selena, tell the higher-ups to chill out. I won't say anything. I put the clip up, I made the choice, I'm sticking with it. I promise I won't say anything to him or anyone else, but you will need to tell me who you are talking about soon, so I can be prepared.” Hearing a knock on my door, I took my time to answer it. I didn't want him thinking I was excited to see him. I agreed on the date, and that is it. I took a look around the room, then opened the door.

He looked at me, and I could have sworn he was drooling. He then asked me,

"Are you ready to head out?" He was wearing dress pants with a white shirt underneath a jacket; he looked mighty hot with his man bun.

"Yes, I'm ready. Where are we going?"

"We're going to a nice Italian restaurant. Let's head out." He held my hand. I had to play the part, or I was going to be screwed. So, when I felt the sparks, I jerked my hand away.

"What was that? Did you rub your shoes on the carpet or something?" He laughed, shaking his head no.

"No, but I hope soon you will know what that means. But until then, let's go get something to eat. I'm starving." I didn't hold his hand again. He opened the car door for me, then he got in the driver's side and drove off.

"I forgot to tell you, you look really nice. I like the dress you're wearing."

"Thank you, you look nice as well."

We arrived at the restaurant. He got out first to open my door. There was someone he gave his keys to so they could park the car. When we walked inside, there was soft music playing, and the food smelled so good that my stomach started growling to be fed. A hostess came to seat us at a table in the corner. She brought us our drink order. I ordered a white wine, and he ordered a red wine. I ordered shrimp scampi, and he ordered some kind of seafood that was still in its shell that you had to dig out. I think it was some kind of snail thing. There was no way I was going to try that; I think it's disgusting. But I didn't say anything. I ate my dinner and drank my wine. Then, we sat there talking. He told me about life at the pack and that he missed me. He couldn't wait for me to remember our bond.

‘Life at the pack is lonely. Everyone is looking forward to seeing you again, but they also know that something weird is going on. I just tell them you are doing some pack stuff, and I hope you will be back soon. Laura, I know it's strange for you waking up in a hospital with no one in the room, then suddenly having a mate. I know this is going to be a weird question, but I need to know: Has your wolf or cat spoken to you at all? I hope nothing happened to them. And if they did, I'm still going to love you. We are a team, honey. We are going to go through this together,” he sounded so charming and caring. Of course, I've been talking to him. What am I going to say, I'm not going to lie. I need to at least be honest about this part.

“Yes, my wolf, Sassy, and my cat, Sissy, are a little feisty. They want to run, but it's hard when I don't know what that means.”

“Girl, you're lying out your ass. You know what we mean. You need to let us out and run so we can get stronger,” Sissy said, and I had to hurry and talk with her.

“Calm down. You know we need to go through this once he leaves to go home tonight. I'll shift, and you can run, but no running to him. You know we can't do that right now.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know already, chill. He better go home tonight because I want out.”

“Are they talking to you right now?”

“Sissy is; she likes to argue a lot and does this purring thing to calm me down.”

“Woman, that's nothing but bull. I want to run. You better tonight, or I'll take over and tell him everything.”

“You do that, and I will make sure I never shift into you at all.”

“You wouldn't.”

“Oh, but I will.” I didn't hear anything else from her. She got really quiet. Jasper smiled at him, and then he said, “I can see her in your eyes as she's looking through them. Her eyes are very pretty.”

“Thank you. I will be sure to tell her. We should get going. I'm sure your pack needs you back home, but I'm sure I'll see you tomorrow so you can check on your workers.” I knew he was disappointed, but he can't always be around me. Not right now, maybe in a few weeks. I don't want him thinking that he has a chance. Well, he does, but not right now.

Jasper pov

We were hitting it off so well until she said that I needed to go home. She was sure my pack needed me. Yes, they do need me. I just can't abandon my pack for her, even if I do miss her and want her. My pack has to come first. I knew she was right. I needed to go home tonight. She is a true Luna, putting the needs of the pack before her. Sighing, I looked into her beautiful green eyes. Then I said,

“You're right. I do need to go home tonight and make sure everything is going well, but I'll be back tomorrow to check on everything. Are you ready to head out?”

“Yeah, sure, let's get going. I paid the bill and then headed out so I could take her back to the hotel. I tried holding her hand as we drove back, but every time I touched her, she would feel those sparks, and it would freak her out. When we reached the hotel, I walked her to her door. Damn, I wanted to kiss her. Maybe she would let me inside. But instead, she softly kissed my cheek.

“I had a wonderful time tonight. Thank you for dinner.” She kissed my cheek again, unlocked her door, and then went inside. I waited until she shut the door, and then I left. I sat in my car for at least an hour before I turned the engine on and left. I had to fight myself not to run back up there and kiss her. This is going to be so hard right now. Things that should have been said but weren't. I wanted to tell her I loved her, but I've already said that. I don't want to push my luck. I made it home. Berk, Hayes, and Paul with their mates were already there waiting. Lucy spoke first.

“Alpha, I will need to return to work tomorrow. I just can't abandon my friend because I found my mate.”

“Lucy, it's okay. We all understand. Besides, everyone works. You won't be made to quit. You had a life before your mate. You will still have that. Excuse me; I need rest. I know it's hard. I didn't want to be here right now. I want to be with my mate. But my pack needs me.

**Cherry’s POV:**

It's been two days since I heard from that jerk. He was supposed to give me details on what's been going on. He better not make me go up there and find out. He won't like it one bit. Since his phone was off, I had to mindlink him.

“Miller, what the f*** is going on? I haven't heard from you in a few days. Is the plan still in effect, or what? Do I need to be there?” It took a few minutes, but he finally linked back. It sounded like he was in the shower.

“Cherry, if you don't mind. I'm with my mate. Yeah, the plan is still going, but since I found my mate, I'm doing it differently now. I just can't make someone fall in love with me, but I will have her to you soon enough.”

“Yeah, you better. You're not there for pleasure, Miller; you're there to work. So get your head on right and forget about that mate. Or I'll kill her.”

“Like h3ll you will. Touch her, and you will regret ever trying to hurt my mate. I said I will handle this. So shut up. If you ever threaten me again, Cherry, you will not like the outcome.” I tried linking him again, but he put up a block. F*** this. I called one of my warriors into my office. He came hurrying into the room.
