I opened my eyes and immediately closed them as the sunlight shined through the white curtains. Sitting up, I looked around the unfamiliar room as memories of last night flooded through my mind. I was almost killed, saved by Jade again, and she revealed that she was dead. Panicking, I jumped out of the comfortable bed and searched around the room for her only to see that she was nowhere around. Quickly, I grabbed my shoes that sat at the end of the bed and began putting them out.
"I can get out of here before she returns." I mumbled to myself as I put the last shoe on. Standing up, I grabbed my keys off of the end table and marched towards the door only for the door to open and she walked in.
She didn't look dead. Her eyes were a bit cold and she was a weird one but her appearance made her look like a normal girl. I expected to see a zombie after she told me she was a corpse. As I stared at her as she closed the door and stared at me weirdly, I noticed that her beauty was one of a kind. She was truly remarkable and it made me completely forget the fact that she was dead.
"What are you doing?" She asked snapping me out of my thoughts. Backing away from her, I held my key out as a weapon.
"Get away from me! Just let me go and I won't call the police." I said. Jade looked at me with a bored expression on her face before walking straight passed me and sitting the platter on the table.
"You think you can hurt someone whose already dead?" She asked with a scoff. "I figured you'd be hungry so there's some breakfast."
Putting the keys down, I stared at the platter as my mouth watered. There were eggs, bacon, pancakes with strawberries, and a carton of orange juice. I stared at it suspiciously then turned my attention to her as she stood there patiently.
"You didn't poison it?" I asked.
"Who knew my soulmate was such a dumb one?" She bluntly replied. "If I wanted you dead then I wouldn't have saved you twice."
Shrugging, I walked over towards the platter and picked up a strawberry. "I could've handled it myself."
"You knew you couldn't handle it which is why you were trying to jump out of the window." She pointed out as she walked over towards the window and looked out.
"What's next? I had classes today and I'm missing them. When can I leave?"
"You aren't safe, Harry." She started. "They're going to try and kill you with every opportunity you're alone. I think it's best if you stick around me."
"I don't hang out with dead people." I said as I shoved a pancake in my mouth. "I barely hang with people who are living."
"You don't have much of a choice. How many courses are you taking?"
"I only have three classes and all are online except for one."
"Great so switch it. You're smart to have your laptop in your car." She stated as she turned from the window and looked at me.
"I had it there because I use it at the cafe sometimes." I explained.
"Yeah, I don't care."
"Do dead people eat?" I asked as I chewed on a piece of bacon.
"No."
"Death really is sad." I said as I shook my head.
"We don't eat human food."
Freezing, I turned towards her. "What do you eat then?"
Jade smirked. "Brains!"
Jumping up, I started to run towards the door only to stop at the sound of her chuckling. Turning around, I saw Jade leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She watched me with amusement as I shot her a warning look.
"Very funny. It's nice to see dead people have personalities." I stated. Jade's smile dropped and she was back to her signature scowl.
"Eat your food." She demanded.
"Why do they want you to return to the land of the dead so bad?" I asked.
"They think that once your soul departs that you're supposed to completely disown the land of the living. It's technically forbidden to even visit the land of the living without permission."
"Who do you get permission from?"
"The Grim Reaper!" She announced. "He doesn't understand that it's actually hard for some of us to Rest In Peace and I refuse to be like everyone else down there who sit in their afterlife sad because they're not about to peacefully rest."
"What do you mean?"
"I was murdered three years ago coming home from work." She revealed. "It's even harder when a piece of you is mourning still."
"Who?"
"My mother. She hasn't stopped trying to find out who murdered me and I won't rest in peace until I found out who did it."
"Wait." I started as I held my hands up. "So you cannot Rest In Peace until you found out who killed you?"
"Yes! I can't rest peacefully until I know that she's okay." She explained.
I stared at the girl as she awkwardly looked elsewhere to avoid eye contact with me. Despite her being dead, I thought that it was sweet that she wanted to come back and discover the truth about her death not just for her to Rest In Peace but for her mother to find her peace of mind. I nodded my head as I chewed on the rest of the bacon and took a sip of the orange juice. Standing up, I gave her a soft smile and grabbed my keys.
"Thank you for the breakfast." I started. "I think I'll be able to handle myself from here on out. Thank you for steeping in and knocking those men out. I'll be leaving now."
Jade scoffed. "You're not going anywhere. You will die."
"I won't."
"You will."
"I won't."
"You'll be dead as soon as nightfall."
"I'll be alive."
"Don't be stupid, asswipe." She said.
"My name is Harry, corpse."
"Whatever. You're still not leaving. Sadly, we are trapped until I find out what happened then you can return to your precious little life of yours."
"Who are you to tell me that I cannot leave? I can simply just walk out this door."
"You will die then."
"So let me!" I exclaimed.
"Don't be stupid!" She yelled back.
Shooting her a bird, I walked towards the door of the hotel room and pulled it open. Before I could open it any further and step out, a hand slammed on the door causing it to slam shut. I turned around to see Jade standing behind me with an angry expression on her face.
"What the hell? Let me go!"
"You are not about to ruin my plans! I have enough problems as it is and if you walk out that door then I will be forced to put my own issues to the side all because of you!" She stated.
"I have nothing to do with your dead people plans! I want nothing to do with you or the other corpses running around here!"
"You're an i***t! They're after you because of me. I will not return until I uncover the truth of my death. They think killing you will make me return back tot he land of the dead. Therefore, I need you to work with me for a few days and give me time to figure out what happened then you can go back to your life!"
"Let them kill me then. What does me dying have to do with you returning back to the land of the dead? You could be figuring out what happened now instead of sitting here and arguing with me."
"I just can't!" She shouted. "I will not leave you to die!"
"I have to go! I have no clothes, I want to shower, and I need to make sure my apartment is still standing after last night. I understand you're obsessed with me but I have to leave regardless."
"Obsessed?" She asked. "You cocky son of a-"
"Goodbye Corpse!" I called as I opened the door to exit again only for her to slam it shut.
"Fine! We will leave together."
"No."
"Yes."
"I'd like to see you try and follow me out this door."
Jade crossed her arms and looked me up and down. "I don't think I was asking and I will not have to follow you. We're going to your apartment right now."
"I'm not going anywhere with you." I stated. Suddenly, Jade grabbed me by my neck and had me against the wall in seconds as I stared at her in shock. She smirked evilly as I gasped for air only for her grip to tighten.
"We will be leaving together." She announced before dropping me. I caught my balance as I landed on my two feet with my hands around my neck. Jade backed away and watched me with a soft smile. Coughing and breathing hard to catch my breath, I glanced up at her.
"I have always told myself that I'd never hit a girl but I refuse to be beaten by a dead woman."
"I've always been a feminist. I'm all for equal rights so hit me." She said with a smirk. "Come and get your hit back."
Balling up my fist, I swung at her only for her to catch it. She twisted my arm as I groaned. Pushing my head back, I head butted her making her let go of my arm. Th sound of my head hitting hers caused me to stop as I looked back at the girl whose neck had just cracked. Groaning softly, Jade placed both hand on her head before slowly twisting it a little bit as the sound of her head cracking back into place sounded throughout the entire hotel room. Smirking, Jade walked forward before kicking me in my stomach causing me to slam into the wall. I landed on the door with a thud as she slowly walked towards me. Leaning down, Jade smiled softly.
"Are you ready to go, asswipe?"
