Chapter Eight

We entered the empty dining room as the food sat on the table. “It seems that they were preparing to eat dinner when we arrived.” I whispered. “We came just in time!” Jade replied as she took a seat. Sitting next to her, I looked around the large dining room without saying another word. I could remember all of the times that I sat at this table with my parents and argued with my dad while my mother sat there without a care in the world. The chandelier still hung in the same spot, the floors still shined as if they had been freshly polished, and the large table was decorated with food as usual. “Sorry about that!” My father said as he walked into the dining room with my mom following behind him. She glanced over at Jade before quickly looking elsewhere. “We weren’t expecting company so I hope this is enough!” “This is more than enough, Mr. Evans!” Jade replied. “You okay, mom?” I asked. “Of course.” She replied. “You have a lovely home, ma’am.” Jade said as she fixed her plate. “Thank you.” “Jade, are you sure that you don’t need to be near heat?” My dad asked. “You’re as cold as ice and that’s not normal.” “She’s fine.” I replied. “I wasn’t talking to you.” “But I was talking to you.” I shot back. Before my father could respond, my mother spoke up. “Diana, where are you from?” Jade smiled. “Georgia!” I watched as my mom clenched her jaw. She watched Jade intensely as she nodded her head. “And school? What college are you attending or are you attending the same school as my son?” Jade’s smile went into a smirk. “I’m not in school, ma’am.” Looking down, I noticed that the tape recorder was sitting in Jade’s lap instead of being in her pocket meaning that she had managed to take it out of her pocket before she sat down. To make matters worse, she had stopped recording. Leaning down, I whispered in her ear. “Why is it not recording?” “You think I’ll confess on tape that I’m dead? I switched tape recorders in the car. I knew you had two in the glove compartment so I took one out and left the other for you. I still have the one that you put in my pocket but we won’t use it.” She whispered. “You’re not in school?” My mom asked. “Why not?” “Because I’m dead, ma’am.” Jade announced causing my mom to freeze and my dad to stop chewing. Looking down at her, I gave Jade a wink. “What are you saying, child?” My dad asked Jade. “Your wife knows, sir.” “What is she talking about, Katherine?” I watched as Jade pressed the record button on the tape recorder than she was holding as she stood up while still hiding it. I looked over to see my dad staring at the tape recorder in her hand. He watched as Jade placed the tape recorded in her back pocket before looking over at me. I sent him a warning look as he said nothing. “You’re apart of The Lennox, mother.” I said as I stood up. Obviously, I couldn’t allow Jade to speak now that the tape recorder was recording because the police would want to know who the voice was once the tape recorder was turned in and how would I explain that a corpse was doing the talking? “What is that?” My father asked. “You’ve been doing this for years! You’ve been killing people in a secret group with more highly skilled and intelligent people and that’s why you never worked because this was your actual job!” I said. “What is he talking about, Katherine!” “I don’t know!” My mother cried. I watched as Jade stared at mom angrily. Quickly, she teleported in front of my mom which caused her to jump out of the chair and my father to stand up. Jade grabbed my mother by the neck as she prepared to squeeze only to stop by the sound of her yells. “You’re right!” She screamed. “I have been working in The Lennox for years! I didn’t mean to kill her!” “Who did you kill?” I asked. “Jade!” She answered. “I shot and killed Jade Dion! I was supposed to kill Alessia Morgan! Jade and Alessia looked alike and I ended up shooting and killing Jade instead of Alessia! I didn’t know until I saw the news the following morning.” “Why were you targeting Alessia?” I asked. “Because she was dating a married man! The Lennox is a private underground group and it is hard to actual contact us. If someone’s lucky, they meet someone whose had contact with us before and they’ll pass the knowledge to them. Robin Williams knew that Alessia was sleeping with her husband so she contacted us to kill Alessia. I was assigned to do the job and I made a mistake!” She cried. “So you are the one who killed Jade?” “Yes.” “How many people have you killed?” My father asked as he stepped forward with tears in his eyes. “Henry.” She cried. “How many?” “Over 4,000!” Jade reached into her back pocket and stopped the recording. Reaching into my pocket, I began to call the police as she watched with wide eyes. I stepped to the side as I told the operator everything that happened. Hanging up, I walked over to Jade who smiled softly. “The police are on their way and I’m turning this in as evidence. You have confessed to everything.” I revealed. “Harry!” She cried. Grabbing Jade’s hand, I lead her out of the dining room before pulling her into a tight hug as she cried silently in my arms. I squeezed her tightly as I allowed her to let everything out. “It’s okay.” I whispered. “It’s done, Harry. We did it!” Jade rejoiced. Smiling, I caressed her face. “You did it!” “I couldn’t have done this without you!” She replied as we opened the front door and walked outside. Looking up, I stared at The Grim Reaper as he stood near the woods in his usual black attire waiting for Jade. Sighing, Jade turned towards me and gave me a soft smile. “I guess I have to leave now.” “I love you.” I announced quickly causing Jade’s eyes to widen. “What?” “Jade, I am madly in love with you. I may not believe in soulmates but my love for you is real. You have bought me nothing but joy and happiness over our short time together and I’m not ready to let you go.” “You have to let me go, Harry. We knew this time would come.” I cannot live without you! It is impossible!” I said. “I’ll kill myself. I’ll come with you.” Grabbing her face, I placed my lips onto hers softly. Jade immediately reacted to me by placing her arms around my neck as she kissed me back. I could feel as a tear rolled down my cheek yet I didn’t care how weak I looked for crying. I was about to lose the love of my life. Pulling away, Jade placed a hand on my cheek. “I will not allow you to kill yourself for me. You will live your life like you originally planned and then you will die when your time comes. I can wait. I will wait for you, Harry!” “Jade.” I whispered. “I have all of eternity, baby. I will wait for you!” She mumbled as she wiped my tears. Nodding, I pulled her into my arms and placed another kiss onto her lips again. Pulling away, I watched as she walked away from me and towards death. He held his arm out for her. She slowly turned around and gave me one last look before wrapping her arm around his and walking. I watched as they both walked until they disappeared. “Son.” I heard someone say. Turning around, I watched as my father stood in the doorway. Sniffing, I quickly wiped my face off as I walked towards him. “I dont want to hear it.” “I want to apologize!” He said causing me to freeze. “I haven’t been the greatest father to you. I haven’t supported you and I regret that deeply. You are my only son and I love you.” “Dad.” “I saw everything between you and Diana.” He started. “You were willingly ready to kill yourself to be with her. Hearing you say that you were ready to die struck something in me. I realized that I haven’t been the greatest and it made me realize that I didn’t need to take life for granted because I’ll never know when our time together is cut short.” I chuckled as I wiped away the tears. “Jade. Her name is Jade.” “That was Jade?” He asked. “Yes.” He nodded. “This explains why she was that cold!” I laughed as he did the same. We stood there and laughed for a few seconds as I caught my breath and looked at him. “I’m sorry too, Dad!” I apologized. “Life is short and I don’t want to live another day being angry at you. You’re my father. I love you and I appreciate everything you have done for me.” He smiled before pulling me into a hug as the sounds of the police sirens sounded.
