“There’s nothing about The Lennox online!” Jade groaned as she laid across the bed.
We were back at the hotel and it had been two weeks since the party. Jade and I hadn’t done anything else other than uncover the truth about her death. We had also grown closer over the past fourteen days. We would work together to find out the truth and then spend the rest of our night underneath one another as the moonlight provided us with light.
“Jacob did say that it was hard to find out who they were. They’re basically assassins, Jade!” I said as I entered the room from the bathroom.
“This means nothing!” Jade exclaimed. “What was the point in telling me about them if they’re going to be impossible to find!”
“I wouldn’t say it’s impossible.” I said as I leaned down and placed a kiss on her cheek. “People have found them before.”
“But their identities are hidden, Harry!” Jade mumbled. “I don’t even know where to start looking.”
“Why don’t we take a break?” I said as I grabbed her by her hands and pulled her up. Jade smiled softly as she wrapped her arms around my waist and looked up at me. I smiled softly as I pulled her into my chest. “You’re working yourself up!”
“Maybe because I know that sooner or later, Grim will send more corpses. I want some progress before they come back so he won’t think I’m just hanging out here!” Jade said.
“I remember when you said that Jacob’s soul had returned to his body. Can their souls return to any dead body or just their own?” I asked.
“They can return to any body living or dead.” Jade revealed. “It really all depends on where Grim tells them to go. Most of the time, the souls possess those who are already living so people won’t become suspicious of a person who was declared dead suddenly walking around.”
“So is there your real body?” I asked.
“Yes.” Jade answered. “I didn’t want to return here and possess someone else! I’d have to deal with their problems and my own!”
“Smart.”
“Plus I wanted to meet my soulmate in my actual form.”
Sighing, I let go of Jade. “I still don’t believe in the whole soulmate thing.”
Jade scoffed. “You’re shitting me! You’ve been all lovey with me as of lately!”
“It doesn’t mean that I believe in soulmates, Jade!” I replied. “I like you but that’s it!”
Jade stared at me for a while then shook her head. I watched as she put her shoes on and pushed passed me and towards the door. Sighing, I called out to her as I followed behind her. The hallway was empty as it was night and most were sleeping. Jade ignored me as she walked towards the stairs but stopped as a group of men met her. Jade backed away slowly as I stopped walking.
“Really?” She asked out loud. I quickly ran over towards her before grabbing her hand and pulling her behind me.
“Look at the couple.” One of the men teased.
“Peter.” Jade said.
Corpses.
“Jade, there has been many warnings sent to you so you should’ve known this moment was coming. He has sent some of the strongest corpses here to bring you back!” Peter announced.
Jade scoffed. “He is dumber than I thought!”
Clearing my throat, I leaned down and whispered into Jade’s ear. “He sent them here? He as in The Grim Reaper?”
“Yes.” She whispered back.
“The only dumb one is you, Jade!” Peter shot back. “You’ve had him going through a lot! You need to let this sick fantasy go and return to where you belong!”
“He’s dumb if he thinks that I’ll return easily and even dumber for sending you all here to bring me back!” Jade exclaimed. “You do realize that even if you’re considered his strongest that I’m stronger than all of you?”
Peter nodded. “You’re stronger than us individually but not stronger than us together!”
“We’ll see about that!” Jade said. Before anyone else could say anything, Jade kicked her leg up sending Peter flying back. The rest of the crew took this as the moment to attack as they all ran towards Jade. I watched as Jade began fighting two men at once. I looked around as two more came towards me. They ran as I ducked causing them both to run into one another. Looking up, I watched as Jade teleported from one place to another cracking necks in the process.
“Hey!” One of the men called out. I turned around to see him charging towards me. Throwing a punch, I caught it with my hand and twisted his arm as the sound of his bones cracking caught my attention. Looking back, I saw another man running towards me. Running around the other man, I placed my arm around his neck before squeezing it until it cracked.
“Good Job, baby!” I heard Jade say.
Ignoring her, I ducked as the other man reached out to me. He grabbed my neck as I gasped for air. He stared at me with a smirk before sending me flying to the other side of the hallway. I prepared to slam into the wall only to feel someone else’s hand around my neck with a tighter grip.
“Look at her go!” A voice whispered. I looked at Jade through my blurred vision as she snapped the last neck and looked up at me. Jade’s eyes widened as she stared at whoever was behind me.
“Let him go!” She demanded.
The man chuckled. “If I snap his neck then he will just come down to the afterlife with the rest of us.”
“Stop it!”
“You think you can stop death himself?” The man asked.
“Please.” Jade whispered.
“You’re so hardheaded, Child! I’ll kill him so you can come back and stay where you belong!” The man threatened. I gasped as his grin around my neck tightened. “I’ve compelled every person in this hotel to sleep so they won’t hear a sound. They won’t even hear his pleas!”
“Okay! I’ll leave!” Jade screamed. I felt the man’s grip loosen as the words left Jade’s mouth. “For f***s sake, Grim! I’ll come back! I’ll leave with you! We can leave right now but please let him go!”
“Why should I?” The Grim Reaper asked.
“I’ll leave! I will not fight with you! I will walk out of here with you and return to the land of the dead as long as you leave Harry alone!” Jade explained.
The man sighed heavily before pushing me away. I dropped to the floor with a thud as I gasped for air. Jade quickly ran towards me and pulled me into her arms as I caught my breath. I looked up at the Grim Reaper as he stared at me with black eyes. He was pale with hair to match his skin, he wore an all black suit with a long black pea coat to match. He not only looked powerful but he looked evil.
He looked down at me before speaking. “You have done well fighting with corpses so far! You’ll make a strong corpse when your time comes.”
“Are you okay?” Jade asked asked me as she ignored Death’s presence. Too weak and too afraid to speak, I nodded my head.
“Enough Jade!” The Grim Reaper stated. “Let’s go!”
“At least tell me who killed me!” Jade asked as she stood up.
“Absolutely not, Jade! You need to let it go!”
“I’ve done all of this only to not get anything in return!” Jade said.
“You met your soulmate!” He shouted.
“He doesn’t believe in soulmates!” Jade shouted back. “It’s pointless!”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” He said without a care in the world. “Let’s go!”
“Grim!” Jade pleaded.
“Enough Jade!”
“This is not how I wanted this to happen!” Jade exclaimed. “I did so much work to get here and did so much to protect myself, him, and everyone around all so I can at least know who killed me! My mother is still living her life mourning me because she never had closure! The mystery behind my murder was never solved! At least tell me something! Please!”
The Grim Reaper stared at Jade before looking down at me. For the first time, he showed some type of remorse. Oddly, he was drawn towards Jade and extremely protective of her and Jade showed no type of fear towards the man compared to the rest of the corpses who had respected death.
“You were shot and killed by a member of The Lennox. Katherine Evans is the one who pulled the trigger. She is one of the most skilled members of The Lennox. The Lennox is still in operation!” He revealed.
Standing up, I watched as the man ignored me. Jade didn’t say a word as she stood there taking in what he had just told her. She had finally learned who killed her yet I didn’t care. I was too focused on the name that he called out.
Katherine Evans. My mother.
“Did you say Katherine Evans?” I asked. “As in my mother?”
Jade turned towards me. “What?”
“This is why I didn’t want to tell you the truth!” The Grim Reaper said as he looked down at Jade.
“You’re wrong! My mother is a housewife is spends most of her time shopping! She couldn’t even yell at me as a kid so I know she wouldn’t kill someone!” I exclaimed.
“Are you trying to tell death himself that he’s a liar?” He asked. “Your mother is a murdered and has always been one! She has more bodies on her hit list than anyone else in the organization! The Lennox has skilled people in different departments! Some are skilled in combat, some are skilled in technology, and some are skilled shooters like your mother!”
Shaking my head in disbelief, I backed away from the both of them. “I cannot believe this!”
“She may have been a stay at home mother but she had a job.” Death responded. “Let’s go, Jade!”
“No!” I called out. “She may be my mother but if she’s murdering people then she needs to be stopped! None of this is right! Jade needs to get her justice! Let her stay!”
“No.”
“You have to!” I started. “I haven’t known Jade for long but I know that this is what she’s always wanted. Sir, you cannot just drop this on her and expect her to leave when she’s so close to getting the justice that she and her mother deserves!”
“Silence Boy!” The Grim Reaper demanded. “You’ve been dragging along with her and leading her on this entire time and now you want to preach to me about getting justice for her? You don’t even believe that she’s your soulmate! You’ve hurt her enough! She’s leaving and that’s final!”
“I will return.” Jade whispered. “But I will leave again. I will come back here and I will uncover the truth! I will fight you for the rest of my afterlife, Grim! I will always return to the land of the living and I will get the world to know the truth about my death! I will not Rest In Peace until everyone knows!”
The Grim Reaper stood there for a while as he and Jade stared at one another intensely. Sighing heavily, I watched as Death nodded his head in agreement.
“Very well then.” He started. “I will provide you with more time.”
Running towards him, Jade wrapped her arms around his neck as she hugged him. I watched as he slowly hugged her back. “Thank you!”
“But you don’t have a long time, Jade! You get the truth out! As soon as she’s arrested then you come back to the land of the dead. I’m coming back to get you myself!” He stated.
Nodding her head, Jade whispered. “Deal.”
