“Try to run and watch what happens.” Jade threatened.
I looked up at David before whispering into Jade’s ear. “Follow my lead!”
“What’s up man?” David greeted. “I expected to see you here but not with someone.”
Throwing out a fake smile, I spoke. “We had to do a little bit of studying.”
“I’m David.” He greeted to Jade who surprised me by giving him a genuine smile. I stared at her in shock and confusion as she smiled at David with pure joy.
“I’m Jade! It’s nice meeting you!”
“Are you two a couple or something?” David asked.
“Of course not!” I exclaimed. David looked at me in confusion before shrugging his shoulders and turning her attention back toward Jade. David and I had been friends for a while now and I knew him more than anyone else so I knew good and well what he was up to by the look on his face.
He was attracted to Jade.
“Ricky’s throwing a party tonight.” David started. “You should swing by since you couldn’t make it to my birthday bash.”
“I’ll try and make it.”
“Jade, I hope to see you there. I’d like to hang out with you a bit and maybe dance a bit?” He said to Jade with a flirtatious smirk on his face.
She won’t do it.
“Of course!” Jade responded causing me to cough. Ignoring me, she continued. “I’ll see you there.”
There was a part of me that wanted to smack my friend out of the library and another part of me that wondered why Jade was being so friendly all of a sudden. David gave her a wink before patting my shoulder and walking out of the quiet library.
“What the hell, Jade?” I asked.
“What?”
“You aren’t going to a party!”
“Yes I am!”
“We’re supposed to be finding out why you died so you can leave plus how are you going to be at a party surrounded by a huge amount of people when your skin is as cold as ice?” I hissed.
“We won’t have to touch.”
“Have you ever been to a party? People touch you! There’s tight spaces and sometimes it happens. Men will grab you out of nowhere and dance with you. Do you really think it is a smart idea to attend a party? Do you think it’s smart to attend a party knowing there’s more corpses out there chasing after you and me?”
I watched as Jade stared at me with an unreadable expression on her face. She sighed heavily as she sat back in the chair with her arms crossed over her chest.
“It’ll be quick, Harry!” She pleaded. “I died and never got the chance to have fun.”
I shook my head. “You’re here to find out who killed you and that’s it. You are not about to put anyone else’s lives in danger.”
“But—”
“I forbid it!”
Jade scoffed as she stood up. I watched as she rolled her eyes at me before storming out of the library. Groaning, I stood up and quickly ran behind her to catch up. Jade refused to acknowledge me as I attempted to speak to her.
“Jade?” I whispered. I looked over to see a few girls watching me. Giving them a soft smile and a wink, I continued to follow behind Jade as she scoffed.
“Jade!” I called out.
Jade kept walking deeper into the parking lot as she walked towards my Range Rover that parked in the back of the parking lot.
“Fine Dammit!” I exclaimed which caused her to stop walking.
“What?”
“You can go to the party but I’m coming with and we will be there for a few minutes!” I replied. “It’s too dangerous to stay there for long!”
Jade smirked. “What shall we wear?”
Hours had passed and we were now sitting outside of Ricky’s home as the sound of music blasted from the inside. Jade had argued me down once again on her clothing. She thought that she would be attending this party wearing a tight black dress that showcased her curves beautifully. I refused to have any men staring her down with lust so I managed to match her outfit so they would know that she was taken.
“Ready?” Jade asked as she looked up at me from the passenger seat.
“Let’s get this over with.” I responded. “Remember what I said!”
Jade raised her bird finger before opening the door and stepping out. Following her, we walked towards the large brick home and pushed the door open only to be greeted by a large crowd and the smell of alcohol and sweat. Jade looked around with wide eyes obviously amazed since it was her first time attending a party in a very long time.
A few of the girls who stood by the door watched me with flirtatious expressions on their faces as I smiled softly at them. I didn’t want to come off as rude but my eyes were kept on Jade as she walked deeper into the crowd. Reaching out, I grabbed her by the wrist as she looked up at me. It almost seemed like everyone disappeared for a quick second and I forgot what I wanted to say, there was no denying that Jade was gorgeous.
Jade’s eyes were dark brown that complimented her thick eyebrows perfectly. It looked as if her mocha brown skin glowed despite the fact that she was dead as her long brown hair was straightened and flowed down her back. I disliked the fact that to was comparing her to other women but none of them stood a chance against the perfect individual in front of me.
Clearing my throat and shaking my head, I spoke. “Don’t touch anyone or you’ll blow your cover. Try not to get too far ahead of me!”
“Pick up your speed then, Harry.” Jade demanded. I opened my mouth to say something as Jade held her hand up and walked away. Scoffing, I grabbed her wrist as David’s voice caught my attention.
“I’m surprised that you came!” He chuckled as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
“I had to make up for missing your birthday party.” I lied.
David shook his head. “Let that go!”
“I’ll try.”
David looked over towards Jade who stood next to me. I watched as his eyes widened for a second before he hid his shocked appearance by placing a smirk on his face. He walked over towards Jade as he held a hand out. “You look extremely beautiful tonight. Why don’t we hit the dance floor?”
Jade looked down at his hand then back up at me. I could see a look up disappointment grace her face but she quickly placed a smile on her face as she looked up at my friend.
“I’d rather get something to drink before hitting the dance floor.” She responded.
David’s smirk was replaced with a genuine smile as he put his hand down. “Then lead the way, gorgeous!”
Jade slowly removed her wrist from my grasp before giving me a warning look and walking away. I watched as David took a deep breath and follow behind her as they walked towards the kitchen area. Realizing that I would need to give her space, I let her go and walked towards the wall to stand there and wait for her to return.
After standing there for what seemed to be an hour, I started to get a bit nervous. Jade hadn’t returned in a while. Leaning off the wall, I pushed the crowd and entered the kitchen only to see no sight of her or David. Pushing a few people out of my way, I continued to search all throughout the bottom part of the house and still hadn’t managed to run into either one of them. Rushing up the stairs, I began to search the rooms.
“Dammit Jade.” I mumbled to myself as I continued to search.
“There you are!” I heard an unfamiliar voice say from behind me. Slowly, I turned around to see a man standing in the middle of the hallway wearing an all black suit. He had a very short haircut to the point where he almost look bald and had a beard.
“Who you are?” I asked.
The unknown man turned his head to the side as he seemed to watch my every move with a smirk on his face. He cracked his knuckles and began to talk a few steps forward. He stared at me with electric blue eyes and chuckled.
“I’m sorry that you were pulled into this but blame your little soulmate for it.” He revealed. “After this, she will have no choice but to return.”
“You’re a corpse.” I announced as I realized what was about to happen.
“You’re smart!” The man said before swinging his fist. Ducking, the man’s fist went straight into the wall. Lifting my elbow, I struck the man on the side of his face before quickly moving out of the way. Turning around, the man ran towards me as he swung his fist again. I rammed into the man as I sent him into the wall. Teleporting to the other side of the room, I groaned. Turning around, I watched as the man smirked at me before teleporting. He appeared in front of me and threw a punch that landed directly in my nose.
“You’re a dumb one if you think you can get rid of me.” The man said as he stood in front of me.
“But I can.” I heard someone say. The man turned around as Jade grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up. Standing up, I moved out of the way as Jade pushed into the wall.
“Jade.” The man said with a smile. “Still stronger than the rest of us.”
“What did you think? I’d become more weaker being here?” Jade asked.
“Yes.”
“Don’t make me do this, Jacob.” Jade said. “Go home and tell him that I said I’ll come when I feel like it!”
Jacob coughed. “You know I can’t do that. He’s demanding that you return this instant.”
“You’re his right hand man so why don’t you make this easier for all of us?” Jade said as she leaned in closer to the man. “Just like him, you know about my death. Point me into the right direction so I can find out the reasoning behind my death then I’ll return home.”
Standing up, I watched as the Jacob man shook his head. “It isn’t my place.”
“Then I’m not going home.”
“He will only send more after you, Jade. You’ll spend the rest of your time running from corpses. You’ll have no choice but to return in the end.” Jacob revealed.
Jade squeezed his neck tighter as Jacob’s eyes widened. “I think you and I are well aware that I’ll never return and the only thing returning to the afterlife is your soul after I snatch it out of this body!”
“Fine!” Jacob exclaimed. “The Lennox is the one who did this to you!”
“Who?” Jade asked.
“They’re a private organization that has many members. There’s no actual place of where the organization is located since the members are all scattered across the world. Your death wasn’t supposed to happen.” Jacob revealed.
“What do you mean?” I asked as I stepped forward.
“She was killed for looking like the girl who was the actual target. These people assassinate people. It’s hard to get in contact with them but when you find out, all you do is tell them who you want killed and they’ll do the rest.”
“Thank you for telling me this information. You have no idea how much this has helped me out!” Jade said to the man.
“Goodness! You’re going to get me in serious trouble.”
“Tell Grimmy that I said hello!” Jade said.
“Jade—” Jacob said before Jade snapped his neck. I watched as Jade dropped his body as it fell limp to the floor.
“Jade!” I whispered as I pulled her near me. “We cannot leave the body here!”
“It’ll disappear!” Jade shot back. “His soul returned to his dead body. I snapped his neck sending his soul back to the afterlife so his body is no longer in use. It’ll just fade away, see?”
I looked down to see Jacob’s body slowly fading into thin air before he completely disappeared. Jade grabbed my hand softly and lead me towards the bathroom. She pushed me to sit on the counter. I looked in the mirror to see that my nose was bleeding from the punch Jacob had managed to put on me. Jade grabbed some tissue off the roll as she stepped between my legs and placed the tissue on my nose. I watched her closely as she avoided eye contact.
Clearing my throat, I mumbled. “I never told you but you look beautiful tonight.”
Jade stopped working on my nose. She looked up at me through her long eyelashes.
“Thank you.”
“Where were you?” I asked.
“Outside with David.”
“Did you let him touch you?”
Jade rolled her eyes. “No Harry! David did not discover that I’m actually dead.”
“I don’t care about that! I just don’t want him or any other man touching you!” I exclaimed.
Jade looked at me before crossing her arms. “Are you jealous?”
Snatching the tissue out of her hand, I moved her to the side and stood up from the leaning against the bathroom counter. Opening the door, I began walking towards the stairs.
“You didn’t answer my question!” Jade called out from behind me.
“No man will touch you as long as you’re here!” I demanded. Jade stood there for a few seconds. “Understand?”
She sighed. “Yes!”
“Let’s go then.” I said before walking downstairs.
