Chapter 9

Harper's POV I bounced back to my room and lay on the bed, happy that I and my mother would be allowed to go shopping. According to the Alpha, we were no longer low-class pack members but a member of his royal family so we had to look like one. Right in front of us, he sent for his Beta, Gillian, and asked him to take us on a drive to the mall. Birch lake town had beautiful places so I planned to feed my eyes while we went for shopping. I realized how caged I was when we were merely maids, the head servant didn't allow us to do anything other than cleaning the compound. Mine was worse, because I was hated by my fellow workers so they piled up extra work for me including the triplets. We had to obey every rule so we wouldn't be chased out of the house that had been graciously given to us by the Alpha. I stared at the wardrobe and wondered how I would feel when it gets filled with clothes and shoes. Dressing nicely had always been my thing, I loved to combine outfits and see how good they looked on me. Happiness coursed through me each time I remembered that I was free to do whatever I wanted to do without fear. "Aren't you ready?" My mother said as soon as she entered my room. She had formed a habit of barging into my room without permission but I couldn't complain because she was still acting like we shared the same room. "I'm prepared already," I said, sitting up. "Like this?" She asked me with a puzzled look making me wonder what was wrong with my dress. "Your dress is worn out, can't you see?" She touched the stress like it was abominable for her to do so which irritated me because I saw nothing wrong with what I wore. Besides, it was the best dress I had presently. "Don't say that mother. This is the only good dress left in that bag, and we are only going for shopping, not a party, remember?" I reminded her and she nodded. "But I would have loved you to look better than this," Then she paused, obviously in thought. "What are you thinking about?" I asked but got no response from her. "Aha!" She exclaimed, her eyes flickered brightly and I knew that she had gotten an idea that I was sure I wouldn't like. "You can wear the dress I bought for you on your birthday, I'm sure it will still look good on you," She said and I wanted to remind her that the dress would still be good on me since I recently wore it but I clamped my mouth shut. "Ummm…" I tried to say something but I felt bubbles in my throat that stopped me from saying what I had in mind. "Don't you like the dress?" She asked. "It's not that, Mother. The dress reminds me of the day I was rejected by the triplets in public. We have moved on and I don't want to keep remembering what hurt me," I told her calmly and watched her move closer to me and embraced me. Her hugs were always warm, the same as this one. I didn't want to let go but we had to when we heard a knock on the door. "You can come in," I said. It was a maid and I recognized her to be one of the people that picked on me while I was still part of them. She was jealous of me for reasons I wasn't aware of and using the influence she had on the chief servant, she made sure that her workload was pushed onto me. I couldn't complain or I would be starved for the whole day and even my mother wouldn't be able to help me. "Good morning, Luna, Miss Harper. The Beta is waiting for you downstairs," She informed me calmly and bowed. I decided to taunt her a little though my mother warned me with her eyes. I just felt like showing her who the boss was. "I didn't hear you clearly or do you have something stuck in your throat?" I asked her with a fake frown. "The Beta said that he is ready and he's waiting for you to come downstairs," She said loudly and muttered some words I couldn't hear. "What's that?" I snapped and she shook her head in fear. I wanted to say more when my mother squeezed my arms gently, asking me to stop. I sent the maid out of the room and when I couldn't hear her footsteps anymore, I burst into laughter. I laughed so hard that tears left my eyes freely. "Why did you do that?" She asked. "I just wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine, and it wasn't a bad idea because she still hasn't changed a bit," I said, cleaning my eyes. "It's alright, let us not keep the Beta waiting," My mother advised and I stood up. I didn't see the Beta often because he was always busy with other assignments given to him by the king. But seeing how he related with the people under him whenever I was assigned to clean the compound made me happy. He was a nice person from what I could see and I planned to ask him a whole lot of questions. We used the elevator even though I still wanted to use the stairs, and we got to the first floor quickly. We strode out of the building and saw him standing beside a black Mini hatchback car. It looked sleek and I wondered how it would feel to be inside it. I didn't know about my mother but I had never been in a car before because there was no reason for me to. I barely left the pack house because they didn't trust me to go on errands. "Good morning, Luna. You look well," He greeted warmly while my mother smiled at him. "Yes, thank you very much," She replied. "Good morning," I greeted sharply, twirling my clothes around at the same time. I felt someone staring at me so I looked up to see Adonis's gaze fixed on me. When he noticed that I had caught him staring at me, he looked away and went back into his room. "What are you staring at?" Mother asked. "Nothing," I said. How could I explain to her that the triplets and I were having a connection that I couldn't understand? I didn't feel the butterflies in my stomach like I was supposed to but I felt the need to always be around him. "You can get in," Gillian said. opening the door for me to get in while I sat beside him at the front. The first thing I felt was the whiff of the cold breeze emanating from the air conditioner. The atmosphere inside the car felt so chilly that I wanted to ask him to turn it off but I turned back and saw my mother enjoying it so I wrapped my hands around my body. "Do you feel cold?" He asked while maneuvering the wheel so it could take a bend. "Not really, I can manage," I said and looked through the window that was tinted black. "This place looks so beautiful. Look at how beautiful those trees are and there, the flowers," I pointed to the white frangipani that was spread out before the tall crape myrtle trees. "Yes, Birch lake is a beautiful town. Other wolves from the neighboring towns come around for tourism. There are beautiful hotels everywhere and it's just like home away from home," He described. I remembered that we were to go on a trip soon and imagined how beautiful the place would be if the streets of the town could be like this. "Mother, can you see how beautiful this place is?" I asked, clapping my hands in delight like a little child who had been given a candy. "It really is," She agreed. "How does it feel to be a part of the royal family?" He asked both of us but we didn't know who would respond first. I nudged Mother to talk since she was the reason we became a part of the family at first. "It feels good. I feel happy to have a complete family of my own, a mate that is not just anybody but the king," She responded and I smiled. I watched the side of his lips widen as well. "Things have changed since you came into Callan's life," He called the Alpha's name casually but I could sense the respect he had for him. "What changed?" I asked curiously. "He has been more active and is always smiling like he has no problem at all. I guess he hadn't recovered ever since he lost his first mate and the moon goddess was kind enough to give him someone to fill the void that was created," He said passionately and I could feel the concern that he had for the Alpha. Mother blushed deeply and I smiled happy that our presence caused a positive change in the Alpha's life. Soon we got to the mall and the first thing I saw was the gigantic building that stood in front of us.
