DAMAIN'S POV "I..." Ember shuttered as she looked at me, her face going red. I smiled as I released her from my grip. She would have fallen to the floor if I hadn't been here to support her. Also, she had a rather stubborn personality which made me feel weirdly drawn to her. "Thank you." She muttered not wanting to look at me. "It's all right," I chuckled, "Do you still want to leave?" "I..." "I won't stop you from leaving once you've recovered fully, but at the very least, recover first." I smiled walking away from her. "Would you like to have something to eat?" I frowned, turning to look at her as I remembered that she hadn't had anything in days. "I..." Ember shuttered, but then the loud rumbling of her stomach made her day otherwise. "Wait here for me, I'll go get you some fruits." I chuckled before disappearing into the forest. In no time, I was back with some fruit and a rather large rabbit. I had seen the rabbit while I was looking for the fruit and felt it would be good if she had some meat. "Here," I passed her the fruit before walking away to clean up the dead rabbit. "Thank you," Ember muttered as she collected the fruit from me. "Walking towards the river shouldn't cause you any problems, go ahead to wash the fruits there also, you could wash up in the process." I smiled as I walked away to set up the fire. In no time, I was done cleaning up the rabbit and was already roasting it. Ember was sitting right beside me looking at the meat while gulping. I smiled seeing her reaction, I knew that the fruit I had given her wasn't going to get anywhere so she was going to have to eat something else. "Here." I passed a large chunk of meat to her before taking one for myself. "Thank you," Ember muttered again under her breath as she collected the meat. Soon, silence ensued and the only thing that could be heard was the chewing of meat from both of us. After a while, I was done with mine, but since the moon was still up, I sat looking into the silence. "Why did you save me?" Ember's low voice drifted into my ears bringing me out of my thoughts. "I guess you might just call it fate." I shrugged as I didn't quite have an answer to her questions. Thinking about it, I had simply saved her on a whim, not because of anything, or maybe it was because of the striking resemblance she had with my mate. "Aren't you afraid I'll put you in trouble?" Ember's low voice came again just as I was getting lost in my thoughts. "I Damain Darkwood have never been scared of someone." I chuckled while boasting slightly. "Besides, whoever your pursuer might be, they would assume you to be dead 'cause I'm pretty sure they wouldn't expect someone to save you here in the wilderness." "Aren't you afraid, I'll implicate you if the person knows that you saved me?" Ember asked again. "Well, that'll depend, besides, who's after you?" I frowned, feeling as though something was wrong. It was as if she was trying to probe me even though I wasn't sure of it. "Is it Alpha Asher?" "I..." Ember shuttered as the panic in her eyes was visible, I could feel her fear and fright when I mentioned the name. It seemed like she had gone through hell at the hands of whoever that might be. "But..." "Let's talk about what will happen when you recover." I interrupted her standing up from where I was sitting. "I'll be heading in, once you're feeling sleepy, come in, but don't stay too long outside, some dangerous creatures do roam about." "I'll come in with you." Ember sprang to her feet immediately after she heard what I said. "Argh!" She screamed in pain immediately she rose to her feet and fell back to the floor. "Relax, you're still injured and can't do much right now." I smiled, appearing by her side and catching her just before she could fall to the floor. "Thank you..." Ember muttered. "You're still unfit to walk, allow me to carry you back." I smiled and carried her just before she could protest. Ignoring her expression, I carried her into the cottage and lay on the bed. "Take this." I gave her a bowl containing some medication. "What's this?" Ember looked at me as she refused to collect the bowl as the liquid in it was quite unknown to her. "Don't worry, it's just some medication to make you feel better, hurry up and take it." I smiled urging her to collect the bowl. Ember looked at me wearily before collecting the bowl, even though she didn't take the liquid in it immediately. It took her some time before she was finally able to convince herself to take the medication. Seeing her take the medication, I smiled and stood up preparing a place to lay on. Since Ember was occupying the bed, I was going to have no other choice but to sleep on the floor. "Who's that?" Ember's voice broke the silence. Turning around, I saw her pointing at a portrait on the wall. "That's my mate." I sighed as I answered feeling aggrieved. "Where is she now?" "She's dead." I sighed, proceeding to lie down. "What killed her?" "She didn't die of an illness, she was conspired against." "Who did that?" "Ember, I think it's time you sleep, you still need to rest so you'll be able to recover rather quickly." I sighed ignoring her question as I wasn't in the mood to talk about the past. The pain in my past was quite enormous so the best was just to ignore it and focus on something else. At that moment, my heart was throbbing as I couldn't help but remember my past. The past I had so painstakingly buried had now resurfaced causing me a lot of pain.
