Convoy of Hopeful

CHASE

We have been on the road for 2 weeks we have gone from a bus and 2 semi's to 3 busses 7 Semi's all loaded with supplies and now 77 people. We are not even close to Haluna, it is still another 4 months or so at the pace we are going. We avoid main roads as much as possible and stop every night at roadside motels most are abandon but we have found some stragglers that join us.

I have been leading everyone and taking care of Sophie and Straten. My parents are helping a lot and I really appreciate it. Loosing my future wife has gotten to me a few times especially when I see the couples surviving this together. I know that nothing is guaranteed out here especially surviving.

We are loading supplies today so most people are at the hotel.

Kyle: " Dude listen to this C.B. transmission.

" We are Sanctana located in the city of Haluna if you are a survivor and wish to join us please come."

" Can you respond back?"

He nods

" Yeah man, I think so"

I grab the hand held

" Sanctana I am the leader of the Convoy of Hopeful we are looking for someone a Sargent Jones is he there?"

I hear a young voice come on the line

" Are you a Soldier?"

" Yes I am My name Is Chase Mathens"

She comes back

" I'm sorry to inform you Mathens but my father is dead"

Kyle

" It's Maddison it has to be Maddison"

I get back on the radio

" Maddison Jones is that you?"

There is a pause

" Yes, it's me Maddi"

" Maddi Listen my Convoy is coming toward you right now we are a group of 77 can you accommodate?"

" What is your ETA Mathens?"

I sigh

" About 4 months I will keep you updated when I can"

" We will be able to accommodate just be safe and remember what my dad said."

" Safety in numbers I know Maddi stay safe we will talk soon"

I hand Kyle back the walkie and get back to work loading the supplies. The Sarg. may not have made it but he told us to trust Maddi. It sounds like she is doing well making a safe place within the city. I wonder if Leah made it as well I decide to ask the next time I talk to Maddi.

We get back to the hotel and there are two new Semi's

Dad: " They saw the Convoy said they heard a conversation over the C.B. from Haluna about a safe place?"

I nod

" They called it Sanctana, it is the Sargents daughter."

" Great at least we know we are going to be okay"

" How many are there?"

He sighs

" 7 Truckers two of them have families and the others lost Thiers. 12 all together"

I nod

" The more truckers the better, Let's get some food I am starving."

I walk into my room and sit down on my bed Sophie climbs in my lap.

" Uncle Chase, why are there monsters?"

I sigh kissing her head

" I'm not sure sweet girl, but I promise the monsters will never get you."

I pick up Straten and make him a bottle, When I finish I shower and lay down. It is really late but hopefully someone in Sanctana is awake.

" Maddi you there?"

" Yeah I'm here Chase what's up?" She sounds like she just woke up.

" Did I wake you?"

" Um no I am feeding Abigail, what's going on?"

" I picked up 12 more today, Wait who is Abigail?"

" An orphan, her uncle was my boyfriend her entire family is gone now she just has me."

I smile

" I've got my best friends 4 year old and 3 month old I know the struggle"

She laughs

" Got to love the Canni's right?"

" Canni's?"

" Yeah it's what we have been calling these things, they won't hurt babies or children under 5 from what we have noticed"

I nod

" Noticed that to and I like that term we will have to use it"

" Chase I need to get some sleep but I will talk to you soon be safe and get here as soon as you can"

" We will Maddi I promise, stay safe yourself"

I put the walkie down and lay down falling asleep, I hope we make it and that it will all be okay.
