Chapter 24 A Big Victory

“What’s going on? You tell me. I won’t go to that company anymore! Send anyone who can do that job to that company. I won’t go in any case!” Marlow glared at him angrily and said. Ned was ecstatic inside but his face remained solemn. He snapped, “What kind of attitude do you have? If you can’t complete such a trivial task, how can you work in this company? Look at him, everyone. It’s not that I wouldn’t give them the opportunity. They don’t have the ability to complete a small task. I can’t help them. I can’t go against my conscientiousness and keep such good-for-nothings in this company!”  The people there almost wanted to vomit at his words. They cursed inside, “Do you have conscientiousness? Don’t make such a joke!” Marlow was new and the colleagues didn’t have so much friendship with him, but Daisy had been here for nearly three months and they liked her because she was kind and lovely. A senior staff knew that his words wouldn’t help but he still stood up and said with a smile, “Mr. Snape, the new colleagues probably don’t have much experience and they need some time to get hold of the work. I don’t know much about Marlow, but I think Daisy has been doing alright in the past few months. She works hard and is keen to learn. Maybe you give them one more chance?” Ned’s mung bean eyes widened and became as big as peanut kernels. He shouted, “One more chance? Are you the chief? The company will be ruined by the people who muddle along every day like you guys. Jim, I tell you. Don’t you think that you are a senior staff here and I dare not touch you? If you don’t behave yourself, I will kick you out as well. I can’t allow people to violate the rules. They haven’t completed the task. Then they have to be fired. It’s useless to intercede with me. I will report this to Ms. Edison now.” As he was about to turn around and walked back to his office, he heard a languid voice. “Wait. Who said we didn’t get the money back?” Ned turned back slowly to see Marlow watching him with a grin. “What did you say? Say it again.” “Are you deaf? Okay, I’ll say it again. I said who said we haven’t got the money back?” Ned was so furious that he laughed. He asked with a wild face, “Marlow, good for you. I haven’t met a young man with such an admirable character for a long time. Do you mean you have got the money back? Then why would you roar that you wouldn’t go to that company anymore after you came back?” Marlow stared at him as if he was an i***t. “Sh*t! What brains do you have? Since we’ve got the money back, why would we go there again? Do you think we get obsessed with that place?” After saying that, he talked cheerfully to the colleagues, “Do you know? That god damn company is in fact a gang. The boss is tight-fisted. We ran all the way to their company but he just gave us two cartons of cigarettes and kicked us out. Here. One pack for everyone.” He took out the cigarettes from his bag and gave one pack to each person. They succeeded in collecting the payment and even getting extra twenty thousand dollars. So he bought two cartons of cigarettes to celebrate with his colleagues. Everyone was so happy to see that Marlow was so generous and worldly. They soon developed some kind of bonding. “Damn it! What else do you expect? From that kind of company, you can even get two cartons of cigarettes. How did you make it?” Tommy widened his little round eyes to the extreme and looked at Marlow the way he looked at a god. At this moment, somebody knocked on the door. Tommy was standing closest to the door. So he opened it. “Hi, Cara.” Outside the door stood a taciturn middle-aged woman. Her name was Cara Lewis. She was an accountant who was in charge of the business of the 6th sales team. Cara had a terrible impression of Ned and she cut the usual pleasantries and got to the point. “Mr. Snape, I come to notice you that the payment for the products you sold to Hennes Corp earlier this year has reached our account.”  After paused for a short while, she added bluntly, “It’s not easy to get the money back. Half a year has passed after the payment was due. I hope you can learn about the credibility of the customers before you make the transactions in the future. You can’t just care about the sales volume and ignore the payment. Your team has the highest sales volume but you have the highest accounts receivable too. If you can’t get the payment back, I am also blamed.”   After she said that, she didn’t wait for Ned to answer and just turned and left. Ned could bully the men under him, but he could do nothing to the people in the accounting department. His face turned green with anger but he said nothing. Marlow now saw the real situation. This bastard just tried to ship the cargo to any customers, but collecting payment was the job of his men. For a customer like Hennes Corp, if he didn’t get the money back from the gangsters, probably the payment would never be paid. The company had to suffer the loss. He couldn’t understand why this kind of bastard was allowed to stay in this company. On the other hand, Cara’s words confirmed that Marlow did collect the payment. Ned was humiliated twice and his face turned from white to green and from green to blue. Realizing that everyone was watching him with sarcastic eyes, Ned turned into a mad dog. He roared, “You are all smoking and doing nothing during working time? Get back to work!” He had lost his senses thoroughly and he rushed to the front of Marlow with anger burning in his eyes. “Boy, don’t be so smug! You wait!” “Don’t point your finger at my face. Be careful not to break it.” Ned didn’t know exactly how excellent Marlow was in fighting, but he was sure that he could easily hurt him. So he just snorted and stopped barking, stomped back to his office. Because everyone knew Ned was vindictive, they dared not speak, but they thumbed up at Marlow secretly. They admired Marlow because he did what they wanted to do. Ned was lucky that he hadn’t had a heart attack being pissed so badly. Tommy asked in a low voice, “Marlow, how did you get the money back? I know they are gangsters.” The other staff were afraid of Ned, but Marlow wasn’t. He raised his voice purposely and said, “It’s all Daisy’s work.” “Daisy’s work?!” Everyone turned to look at her. Daisy kept silent shyly. She let Marlow talk as he liked. “When we stepped into that company, I was almost scared my crap out. The guys there all have tattoos, only short of having a tattoo on their forehead with letters of ‘gangster’. Fortunately, before we saw their boss, they didn’t touch us. But Daisy and I were scared to death.” He paused here to light a cigarette unhurriedly. Tommy was anxious and couldn’t help but urge him, “Hurry up. What happened next? It isn’t the right place to start a new chapter.” Marlow took a long drag on his cigarette before he started again with a loud voice, “Guess what. When the two of us arrived at their boss’ office with trembling legs, the gang’s boss froze at the sight of Daisy.” “Did he fall in love with Daisy at the first sight?” Tommy asked in time to push the story on. “No, he found Daisy’s face familiar. They started to chat and soon they found out that they were neighbors before. Daisy called him uncle when she was a kid and he liked the cute and smart little Daisy very much. But he moved away when Daisy was about ten years old…” He was Daisy’s loving uncle. Then of course the uncle had to pay when the adorable little “niece” went to collect the payment. That was why they collected the payment so easily. Marlow made up this story and told it in a loud voice. He meant to be overheard by Ned in his office. Ned thought he could bully Daisy as he liked. Now that Daisy suddenly had a gangster uncle, probably he wouldn’t dare even if he was twice bolder than before. Marlow was sure that Ned had no special relationship with Kadir as he boasted. Anyone could successfully sell the products to Kadir if he went to his door. Kadir wouldn’t pay anyway, so why wouldn’t he take the products?
