Devon walked into the cell where Phoenix lay in pain, her wound was bleeding and she was slipping out of consciousness. There were little splatters of Phoenix's blood on the floor causing Devon's chest to feel tight as he watched her in pain, there was no other person who could do this to her other than the guards who were no longer in sight. Anger seeped through his veins as he punched the wall of the dungeon to vent his anger. How could they attack his mate with such brutality? He hadn't even given them the right to hurt her.
He turned to his Beta Leroy and growled.
"Send some warriors and let those guards get what they deserve."
Leroy bowed in respect and walked out to carry his orders. Devon looked down at Phoenix who lay on the floor unconsciously, he lifted her and was surprised she was lighter than a child, he took her out of the dungeon and into the pack house for her to get treatment. His wolf was furious at him because of what happened to their mate.
"Why did you have to let her go through all this, she's our mate." Devon's wolf snarled at him as he sat in the waiting room silently thinking of ways to teach those guards a lesson.
"You had better apologize to her when she wakes up or else…." His wolf snapped at him.
"I would do no such thing, I don't owe her anything…. She's an enemy of mine just like her father." Devon whined callously as he clenched his fist in anger, he didn't like that he was having a soft spot for his enemy's daughter but she was also his mate which he didn't like.
A few hours went by and Phoenix finally woke up, she looked around noticing she was in a well-lit and warm bedroom instead of the cold dark dungeon where she was locked. Confusion set in as she thought she had been rescued by someone, her body felt numb but she could still feel pain all over, just when she was about to get up Devon walked into the room startling her, he dropped a tray with a glass of water and painkillers on a table beside the bed, noticing how nervous she was and moved to sit at the other end of the room as she eyed him cautiously. He sat on the bed trying hard to act like he wasn't there but it wasn't working as she stared at him cautiously.
"Why would you bring this?" Phoenix questioned rudely. "Are you feeling guilty all of a sudden that you hurt your mate?" She scoffed looking him in the eye as he shifted his gaze to the floor. Guilt engulfed him in its grip, he never wanted his mate to be treated so harshly, her scent was making him go crazy and he wanted to hold her in his arms and mark her as his, but another part of him wants otherwise, he wants her to pay for what her father did to his parents and pack.
"It's not what you think." Devon defended but she angrily cut him short once again.
"Well, I don't need it." Phoenix snarled, smashing the glass cup on the floor, the broken pieces and the water spattered around but she was least bothered about it.
"What do you think you're doing, you could hurt yourself." Devon scolded surprised at what she had done but Phoenix ignored his concern for her as she felt he was being too nice to her as it was unusual.
"Oh really?…. You ordered your guards to torture me and you want to act all innocent now by getting me treated in your home?" Phoenix yelled. "What other surprise do you have up your sleeves? It's either you kill me or let me go." Phoenix said as she stared at him blankly.
"I never ordered them to hurt you besides they are getting punished for what they did," Devon explained trying to calm her down but it didn't seem to be working. She didn't look like she wanted to listen to him as she laughed hysterically.
"You think I'm that stupid to believe a word coming out of my enemy?" Phoenix laughed at Devon who tilted his head and furrowed his brows in confusion.
"What do you mean?" He asked crossing his legs together as he growled at her, trying to understand her.
"Let me go, I swear you would never hear from me again I promise, I want to be anywhere but here," Phoenix begged, hoping he would grant her desire, as long as she wasn't in this place, she could survive anything life throws to him. Her wolf whimpered in silence as she felt weak, she had hardly eaten anything in days and was weak.
Phoenix had finally given up thinking he would change toward her, she would not let him get what he wants. She would not let her mate treat her like trash…. Never.
"Calm down." Devon roared but it had no effect on her as she was raging in anger and he felt it looking at her stiffly.
"Don't you understand what I'm trying to tell you? An Alpha can't be as dumb as you are right now." Phoenix spat getting up from the bed as the small pieces of glass pierced her feet causing them to bleed out as she walked leaving trails of her blood while looking into Devon's worried eyes but she didn't care if his heart had suddenly softened towards her as she continued walking towards Devon as he eyed her every move. Watching her feet bleed made his heart ache and his wolf howled in sadness.
"Stop talking nonsense and get straight to the point," Devon said dryly as Phoenix leaned closer to him until their faces were inches apart, Phoenix took a whiff of his minty scent while she smelled of blood and sweat which pissed her off.
"I Phoenix Nolen reject you as my mate.", Phoenix said boldly as she gazed into Devon's eyes coldly.
