Seeing her, a wish was granted. at the same time, a hope was shattered.
My own mother thought I was a monster.
I did not dare look back as we ran into the woods. Trees sheltered us from the stones. I felt as if they were welcoming us.
It was night when we finally dared to stop. I grunted in pain. Most of ours had died from severe burns on the way here. My head was pulsing with pain. I could not even keep my eyes open as exhaustion and pain threatened to knock me down. I wanted to just close my eyes and let it all go.
What was I even fighting for?
Suddenly, a shout broke out with a fire. I forced my eyes open and turned my head. I was sitting on a root, and my back ached.
"Look! It's magic! I have magic!" One of them was frantically waving his hands, fire erupting from them. All the burnt ones shrank away from the flame, including me.
"It's not mind magic." There was someone sitting on my root. When did he get here? I didn't see him.
"Or it could be an illusion." I said. "I'd give anything for an illusion right now."
"That's no illusion." he said. "We can't use magic in holy land. We are hybrids, blood suckers. But it seemes we are gifted with something else."
"We?" I asked sleepily. Most of the party was listening to us now. And Most of them moaned in pain.
"Yeah. Us. Look, I can turn invisible." He demonstrated, earning a weak 'oooh' from the crowd. I did not believe him, so I kicked the place where he was a moment ago. I thought there would be nothing, but my feet met with a back and he was thrown to the ground, turning visible again.
"Ooww." He said, rubbing his back. "What's wrong with you?"
I leaned back. "Just wanted to make sure you were real."
Everybody was silent after that. Magic, huh. I wanted magic all my life. Simply having the ability to detect lies would have saved my life.
Right now, all I wanted was this pain to go. The pain in my head, the throb in my heart and all the exhaustion. I wanted them to go away. I imagines the burning going away, skin weaving together and healing my wounds.
As if listening to me, my head began to cool. I frowned. Did somebody applied a cooling salve on my head?
It did not feel like that. I felt more awake, my achings stopped and my body felt new. I looked at my hands. The wounds from falling and burning and stones were gone. Only scars remained, forcing ugly patterns to my skin.
No way.
To confirm my fears, I touched the invisible man. And wished for his pain to go away.
That night, I healed all of them.
There were twenty five of us, ten women and fifteen men. All were sons and daughters of Elves and Angels, so we were able to recover fast. Strongest ones went hunting and bought animal carcasses oozing with blood. Though it was a waste, we did not had any access to necessary tools.
Muden, the invisible guy became my closest friend. We enjoyed each other's company more than we should. His ability to be invisible helped us both in private moments.
We had nothing to chop down the trees, so we traveled and settled in a clearing under a huge mountain. It's top went past the clouds. We settled under it. Little by little, we were getting up.
I settled in with Muden. Others started families. Celestina had two husbands. She lead us all, because she could use her enormous strength to help out with every thing.
Then the conflicts started among us. Some little things began to grow larger. Eventually, we split into three groups. All of us began to live elsewhere from others. We had three villages and seven kids after several months from our banishment.
Then, one day, The great mountain collasped from the middle and buried my village.
We were underground. There was air somewhere. One of is was an air wielder. He tried to bring us back up, but couldn't. There was nine of us buried underground. One healer, one invisible man, four fire wielders and a shadowmaker and two animal talkers. None of us had an ability to go away from here.
So we used all our strength to dig. Countless years passed. We were left with a wide range of tunnels.
One day when we done making love, Muden spoke. "I can't remember how sun light looked, Cenov."
I spoke from top of him. "It was a golden light. It washed all the buildings and trees and rivers." I pulled out of him. I could see in dark. His eyes were unfocused. I touched his bald, pale head. He laid his head on my chest.
"Rivers..." he said, before drifting in to a sleep.
After another countless years, we finally managed to dig our way out. It happened so fast. One moment, after a long time, for the first time, we saw ourselves with the blinding light. Our skin had become translucent from lack of light. Faces were no longer what we remembered. We weren't what we thought we were.
Then it was all over. We were blinded mu the sunlight. Our skin burned.
We realized the truth. We could not go outside anymore.I was a healer. I healed them, all. We decided to not to go outside, after all..
Then, the motivation to live, to breath ended. We lived just for the sake of living. We ate anything, we hunted everything. We still dug for no reason.
The first one to go insane was Harrar, the shadowmaker.
It was a parasite infection, I found out later. I could heal, but I could not grow the parts of brain that was eaten. I was also infected. We all dug out our eyes. We rolled.on the floor. Our blood became poisonous. I began to enjoy inflicting pain on others. On myslef.
Still, somehow, I managed to keep my soul. There was only one wish.
"I would trade any thing for the illusion of death."
