Veronica was standing in front of two brooding vampires, persuading them to enjoy the night in a club outside the kingdom, situated in human society. But two hard-headed brothers weren’t gonna listen to her pleading. For them, her safety came first.
“But I will be safe there. It’s a human society for god’s sake,” Veronica repeated the same word for the 100th time. “I think the club is safer for me than the castle. Don’t you think so?” Veronica grunted. She only said it casually, but her words stiffened both brothers.
No one knew better than Edwin how dangerous the castle was for her, but he was selfish enough to keep her with him rather than hide her somewhere safe.
Edwin’s eyes softened. “Fine. But you listen to whatever we tell you,” he said in a soft yet firm voice. Veronica jumped up and down before holding her three fingers up as a symbol of promise, which made Edwin flash a smile at her. “Go get ready,” Edwin didn’t need to tell her twice. Veronica was long gone before he could throw another word at her.
“Are you sure about it?” Edwin took a deep breath in response to Eli's worried voice.
“She was right. It’s safer than the palace,” Eli heard the self-sarcasm in Edwin’s voice. Edwin leaned back on the couch in his room and tried to rub the stress off his face with his palms. “You think I am selfish? Do you think she would be safer without me, far away from this kingdom, don’t you?” Eli looked at her brother’s tired face, whose eyes were closed.
“Father is certain about her existence. Now everywhere in this world is dangerous for her,” Edwin looked at Eli with glazed eyes. “But don’t worry. We will keep her safe,” Eli added, placing his hand on Edwin’s shoulder.
“I won’t be able to live without her,” Edwin murmured in his almost broken voice.
“You don’t have to, and I will make sure of that.” Eli knew what it felt like to be away from his loved ones, and he wouldn’t let his brother go through that pain. He wouldn’t let his precious cupcake get hurt, even if it cost him his life.
Veronica POV
I stepped out of the closet, getting ready, but my step halted as soon as my eyes fell on the two gorgeous men waiting impatiently on the couch. Edwin wore a brown shirt, blue jeans, and his blue jacket, while Eli was in his black outfit—a black shirt, black jeans, and a black jacket…black suits him. I stood there for God knows how long, staring at them until I heard their grumble.
“Change the dress,” Edwin and Eli growled in unison. “I want every part of your body covered with cloth,” Edwin stated. It wasn’t a statement… it was an order. And they knew very well that I don’t like to take orders.
“Why?” I asked incredulously.
They both smirked before Edwin started, “You don’t want us to rip anyone’s head off at the bar, do you?”
“And we would gladly do so if anyone laid their eyes on you,” Eli finished Edwin’s unsaid words. These brothers definitely know how to approach me.
“f*****g possessive dominant vamps!” I muttered, going back to ‘change the dress’.
“We heard that,” Eli said with an amused voice.
“You were supposed to,” I yelled back before disappearing into the closet.
I put on a pair of skinny jeans with crop tops and my leather jacket and made sure every part of my body was covered. This time, as soon as I stepped out, Edwin rushed to me and pressed his lips against mine.
‘You are gorgeous,’ Edwin mind-linked me. His voice was filled with adoration.
‘Even in mummy’s outfit?’ I joked.
‘Yes. You are still gorgeous. I am sorry…I can’t afford to let anyone gawk at you,’ he whined in my mind. I couldn’t help but giggle at his cuteness.
“I am going to check on something. We will wait in the garage. Come with Eli, okay?” he left after kissing my forehead as I nodded.
I turned to Eli, who was looking at me with so much emotion in his eyes. I went to him, taking small steps.
“You look— handsome,” I said with a small smile.
“And you look as stunning as ever.” His comment made my cheeks burn; maybe it also turned into a shade of pink. My heart skipped a beat under his intense gaze. I shouldn’t feel this way, right? Yeah, I shouldn’t. He is my mate’s brother.
“Shall we?” Controlling my emotions, I pointed towards the door, indicating that we should leave. “Are you okay?” I asked him, walking down the stairs.
“Yes. Thanks to you,” he replied.
“Don’t worry. Sam will come around,” I said, trying to cheer him up. His only response was a small nod. We didn’t utter another word— just walked—side by side—in silence.
----------
The ride to the club was silent. I knew everyone was worried about Sam, though they didn’t say anything. That’s the exact reason why I am taking them to the club— to cheer them up.
“We have been standing here for 10 minutes. Why aren’t we going inside?” Jason whined for the ninth time.
“Jace, don’t you know the definition of patience?” I spoke.
“Come on, Vicky. Can’t you just tell me what we’re waiting for?”
“You will see,” I shrugged, and Jace let out a defeated sigh. He was going to argue when we heard her.
“Vicky!” I turned to the voice and waved at her, grinning ear to ear. Unnie was coming towards us with Sam. Eli and Sam had both been staring at each other since they stopped in front of us. Being unable to resist my annoyance, I pushed Eli towards Sam, and Unnie did the same. And there they are, embracing each other for dear life. That’s what they needed—a push. Edwin and Jason joined them soon. I and Unnie stood there, watching the brothers—reunited.
---------
“You look like you have something to confess,” Unnie said, sipping her drink. We left four of them to catch up while me and her were sitting at the bar counter. My lips curled up, remembering how well she knew me. Taking deep breaths, I confessed everything—about myself and about my parents. Initially, I thought she would be scared or shocked, but she wasn’t; instead, watching her reaction, I was shocked. She rubbed my back gently as a way of comforting me, with a small smile on her face.
“Wanna go up?” she said, indicating to the crowd, dancing on the floor wildly.
“You bet!” We stood from our seats and strode towards the dance floor.
---------
A pair of strong arms wrapped around my belly. But instead of slapping him for stopping me from dancing, I leaned against his strong, muscular chest, inhaling his intoxicating smell. I angled my head to give him more access to my neck. The trail of kisses felt rougher and hungrier. Anger and tension were erupting from his body.
‘Is something wrong?’ I asked him through our mind link.
‘I want to kill them. I want to kill everyone who is looking at you and having dirty thoughts about you. I want to kill them all,’ his voice came out deep and raspy. He was beyond angry. I turned to face him; his eyes were closed, and he was tensed. ‘Help me…help me to forget my rage at killing them,’ his eyes were begging me. And I did the one thing I needed to do to calm him down.
I pressed my lips against his, licking and tugging at
his bottom lips. He parted his delicious lips for me to devour. I wrapped my hands around his neck, and his arms protectively rested on my waist. I ran my fingers through his hair as his expert tongue explored my mouth, and I melted in his arms. His running hands on my back sent shivers through my body. A moan of disappointment escaped from my lips as he pulled back suddenly. He cupped my face, flashing a smile, and I— was gone.
“As much as I don’t wanna be a third wheel, Edd, you need to listen to something,” Jason’s loud voice interrupted our moment. As much as I love my brother, he can be annoying. Edwin let out a sigh.
“Little fairy, duty calls,” Edwin said with an apologetic smile.
“I hate your duty,” I muttered under my breath. And he just chuckled.
“Eli is somewhere around. Find him and go straight to him. Don’t go anywhere. Okay?” Placing a lingering kiss on my forehead, he left with Jason. I stood on the dance floor where Sam and Unnie were dancing, drowning in their own world. I roamed my eyes around the crown, looking for the person my eyes were craving to see. I spotted him at the bar counter, his back facing me. I walked towards him as if there was an invisible thread pulling me to him.
“Why are you sitting here alone, drowning yourself in drinks? Do you even get drunk?” I asked, adjusting myself on a stool beside him. He scoffed, playing with his drink.
“I wish I would,” he spoke, staring at the glass of his hand, “At least, I could forget the… pain.” His words twisted my stomach, tightening my chest as if it weren’t his… it’s my own pain.
“You should find someone.” My own words somehow angered me, watching him with someone else… What the hell am I thinking?
“I have already found someone,” said Eli, a smile crept on his face as he spoke. I should have been happy for him, right? But I found my insides burned by the news. “But she is already taken.” Relief washed over me at his last word. Damn! What the hell is wrong with me?
“You…you should at least tell her how much you want her. Maybe…she will accept you,” I suggested to him, trying to keep my wild thoughts under control. “Is-is it so wrong to want two men equally at the same time?” The words flew out of my mouth before I could control them. Can’t I control my filthy mouth for even a single second?
Eli smiled scornfully. “Let me ask you then. What would you do if you were the woman I chose? Will you reject me? Will you choose me over Edd, or will you accept us both?” he asked, looking at me intently as if he were staring right through my soul.
I grabbed a glass of whisky and gulped down its entire contents. I hate the idea of choosing one of them over the other. And that’s when I did something I would regret.
