In the Lucian Valley, nights are always silent. But that night wasn’t. Thousands of screams of pain and death echoed through the air. The waves of air that once used to refresh one’s mind now carry the smell of blood.
The smell of blood, which gives everyone the feeling of nausea, is a pleasure for the vampires. Edwin was standing in a dark, deep forest; a smile of victory was dancing on his face. He swung his sword to cut through the crowd. But he stopped hearing an alluring voice. The voice captured his mind and heart in a blink. And an intoxicating scent, which he couldn’t resist, hit his nostrils.
His feet led him toward the voice as if he were in a trance. His steps halted in front of the voice. His eyes met with a pair of beautiful dark brown eyes. He took baby steps to go to her and raised her hand to touch hers.
A loud growl escaped from him as the girl, carrying the enchanting infant in her arms, stepped back. She brought the baby closer to her chest, protecting her from the bloodsucking vampires.
“Give her to me,” An animalistic growl came out of Edwin’s chest. The girl shook her head, stepping backward. How dare that lousy woman! “Give my mate to me,” he roared again. The girl’s eyes went wide, but she still shook her head, stepping back.
Another vampire came out of nowhere and went to attack both the child and the girl. Edwin swung his sword and stabbed it into his chest. How dare that stupid vampire hurt Edwin William Roberts’ mate?
“Give her to me,” Edwin repeated his words.
“They will kill her. You can’t protect her alone. You are too small to protect her,” she cried out, stepping away from Edwin. He growled at her dangerously. His breathing grew heavier, and his eyes were becoming red. He had just found his mate. And she was saying someone would kill his precious mate. How dare she! No one can touch what’s his. No one can touch his mate while he is alive. He stepped forward toward her, giving her a murderous glare.
“I am sorry but I need to do this,” she threw the baby toward the sky and screamed, “Ruth, run away with her.”
A sharp pain spread through his chest as his mate was snatched away from him. A loud and painful series of growls escaped from him. His body started to burn. He stabbed the sword into the girl’s heart before falling to his knees and clenching his chest.
The balls of fire started coming out of his hands uncontrollably. Everything around him was burned to ashes. But all he felt was pain—the pain of losing his mate. Rage took control over him until his body went numb and he didn’t remember the most precious moment of his life.
Edwin was squirming and mumbling in his sleep. He was sweating and breathing heavily, clenching his chest. It was obvious that he was having a nightmare. Veronica had been trying to wake him up for the last few minutes. He suddenly snapped his eyes open. He was looking horrified.
When Edwin’s eyes fell on Veronica, he jumped up, showered kisses all over her face, and hugged her for his dear life. As if he would die if he let her go. Veronica held him close until his breath went normal.
“It’s alright. It’s only a nightmare. Don’t worry,” Veronica cooed in a soothing voice. But Edwin knew better. It’s not a nightmare. It’s his memories which he had forgotten—and which have hunted him for centuries.
“I finally found you,” he beamed through his glazing eyes filled with tears. Veronica could feel his distress, his fear, and his frustration because of their bond. Their mate bond was stronger— stronger than anyone, to be exact.
They snapped their heads toward the sudden sound. And there stood a heavily flushed Eli. He was drenched in sweat, breathing heavily through his nose. He merely gave Veronica a nod when she asked if he was okay. His entire focus was on Edwin.
“Is she...?” Edwin looked away as Eli voiced low but loudly enough for Edwin to hear. Edd gave him a nod, closing his eyes tightly as if controlling his anger. Eli slammed down on the bed as if his knees had given up. He was trembling visibly and breathing hard.
Veronica left Edwin’s side and put a hand on Eli’s shoulder. She let out a gasp as she was abruptly embraced by a giant half-demon. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling her scent deeply as if it were a drug for him. Veronica ran her hands over his back, mumbling sweet nothings. Eventually, he calmed down a while later.
“Eli,” Edwin’s voice cut through the silence. Veronica pulled away from Eli, giving Edwin a guilty smile. She knew Edwin didn’t like her hugging other men. He always had a scrawl on his face when she hugged Sam or Jace. But this time she didn’t find him scrawling like always, though his face was emotionless, blank. “It’s midnight. Go back to your room. We’ll talk about it tomorrow morning,” he dismissed Eli, who glanced back at Edwin one last time before teleporting.
“What was that?” Veronica asked Edwin, still confused by their behavior. Edwin held her waist and pulled her into his arms. And he inhaled her sweet, intoxicating scent as if it were the only thing keeping him sane.
“He might have a nightmare,” he answered, looking down at her and brushing her cheek with his fingertips. His eyes held a faraway look that Veronica couldn’t pinpoint. He has been shutting her off for the last few days. He even blocked her from reading his every thought. Veronica was angry at first, but she didn’t push him as she didn’t want to be a clingy mate. Now she only has to depend on her instincts and their strongest mate bond. Though she can’t hear him, she can feel him as her own.
“What nightmare?” Veronica asked, looking for the answer in his deep, captivating blue eyes. She can feel that he is frustrated and scared. But why?
Why was the strongest vampire of the greatest blood-throne coven, the crown prince of the most powerful vampire kingdom, scared? He wasn’t even afraid of the king himself. Then what caused him to be afraid?
“The worst fear of our lives,” he answered, giving her a forced smile. ‘–losing you,’ he kept the last word unsaid. “Sleep,” he murmured, kissing the top of her head and pulling her closer if that were even possible.
Veronica falls asleep soon enough in her safe haven. But Edwin couldn’t sleep as his father’s words replayed inside his head repeatedly.
...A few days earlier...
Emanuel Roberts, the ruthless king of the vampires, was pacing back and forth in his studies when Edwin stepped inside. The black-colored cabin was as large as the other rooms in the castle— A large mahogany table is in the middle of the room; the walls are all blank with no pictures on them. Every cabin is the same—there isn't a single portrait in the castle, as if having one were a crime. The black curtains prevent the sunlight from coming from the large glass window. The only source of light was the crystal chandelier.
“Father,” Emmanuel stopped pacing at Edwin’s voice.
“As you are the crown prince, and you will soon inherit the throne, you need to take some responsibility,” Edwin’s father’s authoritative voice boomed through the room.
“Give me orders, Father,” Edwin said with a blank expression.
“You need to find the Hybrid Princess,” Edwin masked his shocked face as he heard his father say.
The Hybrid Princess was the daughter of the last Lycan king, Lucian Adrian Reign, and Queen Vanessa Amber Reign. Queen Vanessa was the princess of the Goldeneya Kingdom— the Kingdom of Fairies, which was founded by an archangel who left heaven for his beloved.
During the war between the lycans and vampires, the lycans were wiped out from the earth. And the newborn Hybrid Princess was never found. Rumors had it that she was killed during the war or that she was still hidden somewhere in the world.
“How can you be so sure that she is still alive?” Edwin asked him. Edwin’s question made his father’s smirk grow wider.
“A lycan’s scent has been tracked. Have you forgotten that? The prey has walked into the trap,” Emmanuel’s loud laughter echoed through the room. Whereas Edwin flinched inwardly, his cold blood froze hundreds of times more upon hearing his father’s words.
“Why do you want that hybrid princess?” Edwin couldn't stop himself from speaking; the word flew out of his mouth.
“She is powerful. She possesses the power to control the five powerful kingdoms, including the underworld,” Emmanuel’s evil laughter made Edwin shiver. “Soon her power will be mine,” another series of laughs arose from Edwin’s cruel father’s chest, shaking the ground.
...Present time...
Edwin glanced down at his sleeping mate. Her tiny figure fits perfectly into his giant arms. For the last few days, he has been keeping an eye on her, appointing Sam to guard her when he isn’t around. What if she was the one his father was searching for? How is he gonna protect her?
‘I wish I could hide you in my chest. I would never have let you get out of here,’ he whispered, kissing her forehead.
