“Don’t go near him. He is a demon,” Edwin spilled the last words with so much venom. “Let’s leave,” Edwin tried to drag her out. But Veronica stood there unfazed. She didn’t care, actually. Vampires, lycans, demons, and witches didn’t actually matter to her anymore.
“I won’t leave,” Veronica answered, still staring at Eli.
Edwin yelled in anger, “Can’t you see he is a demon?” putting his hands on Veronica’s shoulders. Eli snickered at Edwin’s words and said, “He is right; I am a demon— a half-demon. So, don’t worry about me, just leave,” in almost a pained voice. His demon again tried to come to the surface, but he pushed him back.
Veronica stared at his almost-dark eyes. She could see his energies were draining. His glowing, dark eyes were fading away. Those eyes didn’t scare her. All she could see was pain in those eyes— the pain of betrayal, the pain of losing his family and friends, the pain of rejection. She could feel it as if it were her own.
“Demons are enemies of vampires. Let’s go. He could hurt you,” Edwin said again, pulling her towards the exit.
“So do I,” Veronica’s outburst stops Edwin’s track. His eyes softened as he looked at her. “I am a lycan, whom vampires despise the most. He saved me, Eddy,” Veronica said. She was almost on the edge of crying. “Look at him, Eddy. Can’t you see— he is suffering. We can’t leave him. Please,” Veronica’s pleading voice softened Edwin’s heart.
Veronica tried to go to Eli, but Edwin stopped her. “No. You won’t go near him until I say so!” he told her firmly, then went close to Eli, who was still trying to control his demon.
“What the f**k are you doing, Edd? Just leave as I said,” Eli roared in an animalistic voice, which didn’t stop Edwin, who instead smirked.
“Sorry, Eli. But I can’t say no to my mate,” he bragged in front of Eli, who nearly attacked Edwin. Edwin dodged that. “Now tell me what I have to do to stop your demon? Do I need to tire him out by sparring? I can do that,” Edwin spoke nonchalantly with a smug face. “Just let your demon out. I will beat the hell out of him,” Edwin mocked Eli, making him growl even louder. Veronica actually thought of smacking Edwin on the back of his head. He was provoking Eli.
Eli knew better, he couldn’t possibly let his demon out. It would end up in a disaster which he wouldn’t ever allow. He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if his demon fulfilled his demand. Eli won’t let that happen. He controlled himself before speaking to his bloody brother.
“Cut the crap, Edd. There’s a vial on the shelf— the red one. Inject its liquid into my vein,” Edwin went to the shelf and took the vial as Eli instructed. Then the realization hit him. It’s ‘veleno’— a venom for the demon. Eli might die if Edwin injected him.
Edwin looked at Eli as if he was crazy. “Just inject it, damn it! I can’t hold him back!” Eli cried out. Another animalistic growl erupted from his chest. And without wasting time, he injected the venom into his system, as Edwin didn’t want his mate to be somehow hurt by this demon.
Eli stopped struggling, and his breathing slowed down— far slower than normal, his body went numb, the glow in his eyes faded away, and his eyelids started to drop; Veronica rushed beside him and caught him as he went to fall down. Her eyes started to blur with tears as she held his numb, unconscious body in her arms. She looked at Edwin helplessly as he crouched down beside them.
“Don’t worry. He will be fine. He is strong—even stronger than me. He has demon and vampire blood as well,” Edwin gave her an assuring smile. The couple let out a long sigh as they stayed beside the hybrid prince.
*******
A low growl escaped from Eli’s mouth as he woke up feeling numb. He couldn’t sense his demon—it must be the venom doing its work. It will be fine after a few days though— no venom can stop his demon. He observed his surroundings; he was still in the living room, lying on the couch.
On his left side, Edwin was sleeping on an armchair, and his sleeping mate was on his lap, wrapping both of her hands around his neck and placing her head on his chest. They do look comfortable. Watching this couple, stung something in his heart. Why can’t he have that? He might never have this kind of thing. He sat up, sighing at his own fate.
“You woke up,” Edwin’s voice startled him. He gave Edwin a nod.
“Why didn’t you leave?” he asked Edwin once more. They could have left him. It’s what everyone did to him.
“She wanted to stay,” Edwin said in a low voice, looking down at his sweet mate. Edwin’s answer startled him. No one ever wanted to stay beside him. No one cares about him. Then why?
“You could have used the room,” Eli said again, composing himself.
“She wanted to stay beside you,” Edwin shrugged. This time Eli smirked.
“Looks like your mate cares more about me,” Edwin glared at him.
“She cares about everyone,” the rumbling sound of his chest stirred his sleeping mate.
“Why are you shouting in the morning,” Veronica mumbled in her oh-so-sexy sleeping voice, adjusting herself in Edwin’s lap. But—oops!
“Don’t move,” Edwin’s deep, hoarse voice echoed through the room. Veronica looked at him innocently, tilting her head and moving slightly. “I said don’t move,” he said again, closing his eyes and taking deep breaths. Realization hit her when Edwin’s little buddy poked her under her butt. Her cheek couldn’t be any redder than it already was.
Eli burst out laughing watching those two. Veronica jumped out of Edwin’s lap, realizing the presence of someone else in the room. Her eyes widen as she sees Eli sitting on the couch. She nearly jumped at him and hugged him.
“I was so scared,” she whispered, her voice sounding as if she were on the edge of crying. Eli shared a look with his brother before wrapping his arms around her.
“I am alright, Cupcake,” he replied with a soft smile, caressing her head.
“We need to leave,” Edwin said after some time. Veronica pulled away from Eli and concentrated on what Edwin was about to say next. “There’s some problem arising in the castle. They smelt her lycan,” Edwin became horrified as he said the last word.
Eli suddenly left his seat, disappearing into one of his rooms before coming back. He put something in Veronica’s hand. She looked at him in confusion.
“It’s a suppressant. It will hide your lycan’s scent,” she used that on herself.
“Is it trustable?” Edwin’s voice came questionably. Eli gave his usual famous smirk before replying sarcastically, “Have you guys ever found out I am a vampire-demon hybrid?” Edwin gave him a nod of acknowledgment. “But I can still smell her,” Edwin said in confusion.
“Cause you are her mate, dummy, and you have marked her. So, it’s natural for you to smell her,” Eli explained.
“Can you smell me?” Eli shook his head, feeling somehow disappointed as Veronica asked him. She forced a smile at him.
“Alright, let’s get back before their suspicion turns on us,” Eli said, and he grabbed both Edwin and Veronica’s hands when Edwin stopped him.
“Can you teleport us? Well... your demon is poisoned, and...” Edwin trailed off.
“You forget I am a vampire too, and teleportation is one of my gifts.” He held them tight as he finished the sentence. “On the count of three,” Veronica closed her eyes and was ready to count. But before she even started counting, “three,” she heard Eli’s voice.
For a brief moment, everything was silent and numb, and she felt herself dematerialize in space. When she could feel herself again, her head started spinning. A wave of nausea hit her. She could have fallen if Edwin and Eli hadn’t held onto her.
“What the hell, Eli!” she yelled as she regained herself. Eli gave her a guilty smile before saying, “You will get used to it,” winking at her.
A sudden knock grabbed their attention. Sam came inside as Edwin asked him to do so. A frown appeared on Sam’s forehead as he saw Eli beside them.
“What is he doing here?” Sam spat and gritted his teeth as he split venom through his mouth. Veronica felt Eli flinch at his words before composing himself.
“I was just enjoying my time with my cupcake,” he said casually, wrapping his hand around Veronica’s neck and beaming like an i***t. Sam’s eyes narrowed; he was getting angry. Eli was quite pro at provoking people without caring about the consequences.
“What’s the matter, Sam?” Edwin cleared his throat, gaining Sam’s attention. He hadn’t time to play a child’s game like Eli. Edwin was more mature than him, but when those two started arguing, even the bloodgoddess couldn’t stop them.
“Regarding yesterday’s lycan’s case, the king summoned you,” this time Veronica felt both Edwin and Eli stiffen beside her. Edwin gave Sam a nod, composing himself. He went toward the door but stopped mid-way.
‘What if something wrong happens when he is gone? How could he leave his little fairy alone and unprotected? Should he ask Eli to protect her? But what if his demon returned? Who will save her from him then?’ thousands of questions swirled around his mind.
“Sam, stay with her and protect her. If something happens, inform me immediately,” Edwin ordered Sam. Sam nodded still, glaring at Eli. “And Eli,” Edwin called him, going towards the exit, “...Get out,” he stated without glancing back.
“Cupcake,” Eli glanced at Veronica with puppy-dog eyes, “No one loves me,” he said, pouting like a baby. ‘Oww...’ Veronica almost blurted out but stopped herself and instead giggled at his childish behavior. Removing the fake tears, Eli left the room, glancing at Sam one last time, who didn’t take his eyes off him for a second.
Letting out a deep sigh, Veronica called Sam and gestured for him to sit beside her. “Stay away from him,” it wasn’t hard for Veronica to understand about whom Sam was talking; she just didn’t know the reason. But she will find out soon.
“When are you going to tell Unnie the truth?” she asked him, avoiding the topic. Sam let out a long, desperate sigh.
“I-I don’t know. I am just scared. What if... what if she is scared of me? She already doesn’t trust men, and if I...” Veronica stopped him from going inside his wild imagination.
“The more you delay, the more she will get angrier,” Sam sighed. “You know what, Sam, if someone truly loves you, he or she doesn’t care about who you are, what you are; the only thing he or she cares about is you,” she told him, giving him a small smile as she comforted him.
“Thanks, Vicky. You owe me this one,” Sam said with a grateful smile.
“Remember to pay your debt,” Veronica warned him, pointing his finger toward him before they both burst out laughing.

Eli stepped inside his room, stumbling on his feet, and somehow managed to drag his numb body to the bed. He temporarily lost his demonic power. Moreover, using teleportation drained all his remaining energy.
“Who told you to act so tough?” a soft female voice rang as her delicate hand caressed his head. The left corner of his mouth turned up. He lifted his head up and placed it on her lap, wrapping his hands around her waist as she brushed his fingers through his hair lovingly.
“I missed you,” he mumbled, closing his eyes.
“I don’t think so,” she replied in a singsong voice as her lips twisted. “I don’t need to be worried about you anymore, someone has taken the place for me,” she said happily.
“She is already taken,” Eli replied with a sigh.
“Don’t give up; you might get a treasure this time. You always gave up so easily,” she said in a sad voice, reminiscing about the past.
“I haven’t given up the main reason for my existence yet,” he replied, reminding her. She let out a shallow chuckle.
“Then who is stopping you?” she murmured slowly, loud enough for him to hear.
“You. I don’t want you to be heartbroken,” she remained silent, looking outside. The roses looked beautiful through the window.
