Veronica was sitting on the bed in the dark room, staring at the red moon which was the only source of light coming through the window. Edwin had to go back to the castle. So, she was alone in the room. She was feeling restless and edgy.
‘What the hell is happening?’ she groaned inwardly.
‘It’s a lunar eclipse— a full moon night. And we need to shift. Let’s go out to the woods,’ Liana begged in her head.
‘Are you f*****g crazy? My body is still hurting like hell and you wanna shift again!’ Veronica almost shouted at her. Crazy lycan! She was nagging in her head for hours. Veronica’s head would burst anytime soon due to Liana’s continuous whining.
A touch on her hand instantly calmed her nerves down. Her restlessness disappeared in an instant. She snapped her head to see the person. ‘Why is it him? Why has his touch had this effect on her?’ she mused to herself. This time her lycan didn’t answer. It seemed like she was in a daze too.
“I know it hurts— knowing your true self for the first time in years,” his words brought her back to the earth from her trance. She wasn’t even aware of how she was feeling— happy, sad, or confused. A lycan— she was a freaking lycan! Didn’t lycan extinct from the earth? How on the earth was she still alive! Speaking of which, she left her home to find her birth parents. Did that mean they weren’t alive? Wouldn’t she ever be able to meet them?
The thought alone made Veronica all over burnt again. She was losing control over her lycan. A tight embrace made her relax. A soothing shiver spread through her spine. She broke contact as she regained her senses. Her eyes met with the dark black one’s.
‘My feelings must be so overwhelming that it messed with my heart and head,’ she reminded herself as she forced herself to stop thinking about those black eyes of his. She leaned back and turned to the other side. A comfortable silence fell between them.
“She wanted to shift,” Veronica whispered mindlessly.
Eli’s soft voice reached her ears, “It’s only natural for the werewolves and the lycan to shift on the full moon. I am sorry. I can’t let you shift. It’s too dangerous for you to shift outside,” as he took her hand and placed a bracelet on her wrist— made of blue stone which was shining in the moonlight. “It will restrain your lycan from shifting. Don’t worry, it won’t affect her strength a bit. You can shift again when you remove it from your wrist,” he explained.
“And,” Eli placed something in her hand. She glanced at her hand— it was her cell phone. “...talk to someone close to you. You’ll feel better,” Eli said softly.
“Why are you helping me?” the words just came out of her mouth without thinking.
Eli paused for a moment before answering, “Because you are my brother’s mate.” Veronica almost snickered at his answer.
“I don’t think you two have such a great relationship,” she commented casually. She really needed a filter for her words sometimes. Eli wasn’t hurt though he rather smirked.
Eli leaned down and asked, “Do you know the actual reason, Cupcake?” Their faces were inches apart. Eli trailed his fingertip along her face and said with his usual famous grin on his face, “I love everything that Edwin has. And I want everything that he has, including you,” he finished his sentence, staring into her eyes and raising her chin up slightly.
Ending his words, Eli exited the room, leaving a flushed, confused, and breathless Veronica behind. Her mind was still stuck at the point where their lips almost touched. ‘Oh, come on, snap out of it already,’ she screamed in her mind. She definitely had gone crazy— or her lycan was just too horny.
‘Don’t blame me, you freak,’ Liana screamed in her mind.
‘Thank god, you are alive,’ Veronica answered sarcastically. After all these things, she decided to show up now!
‘Shut up.’
After a long argument with Liana, Veronica glanced at the phone in her hand. The only person that came to her mind was her best friend. So, without wasting time, she dialed her number.
“What the f**k were you doing? Are you even f*****g alive? Do you know how scared I was,” Isabella’s voice boomed through the phone after the second ring. Veronica needed to put the phone away from her ear for a second. She knew her Unnie would be worried, but hell she was tangled up in such a mess that she didn’t have a chance to call her.
“Sorry. I was just...” she felt so guilty that she couldn’t tell her anything right now. It would be too much for her to take. “...tangled up with something...” Isabella stopped her and asked in a motherly voice, “Are you alright? Did Mr. Roberts hurt you,” she went into protective mode again.
“Don’t worry, Unnie, I am alright. And Eddy might kill himself rather than hurt me,” Veronica replied. “Unnie, what if my real parents are dead,” Veronica asked her suddenly. Isabella froze for a moment. She wasn’t ready for this question.
She composed herself before answering, “Vicky, you know your foster parents, you have me, Mr. Roberts. We all love you. You won’t ever be alone— well not until I am dead at least,” she said the last part jokingly. “Vicky, we don’t care who you are, who your parents are; we just love you for who you really are, we love you for yourself,” Isabella told her softly.
Isabella always makes her feel at ease whenever she was worried about something. She always managed to clear her mind.
“How are you, Unnie,” a small smile crept on Isabella’s face as Veronica asked softly.
“I am fine. You don’t have to worry about me.”
“And how far have you and Sam gone?” Veronica asked in a teasing tone. Isabella’s face reddened almost like a tomato. Sam went to her before he left and they kissed for the first time. And his mouth was so f*****g delicious that she couldn’t resist.
“He is still on a probation period,” she replied almost instantly. Veronica laughed at her action. She knew they couldn’t stay away from each other; they just made for each other just like she and Edwin.
They hung up after talking for a few more minutes. Veronica heard noises in the silent room, coming from the living room. She stepped into the living room. It was dark inside. The only source of light was a shining red moon, coming through the huge glass window. There was a couch in the middle of the room. What grabbed her attention was the figure lying on the couch, clenching his heart and groaning in pain.
Veronica’s feet instinctively led her to the figure, and she crouched down beside him. His eyes were closed. He was squirming from side to side. His pained face made her stomach twist.
“Eli, are you alright? What happened? Please talk to me,” Veronica’s voice was lacing with concern and worry. Eli opened his eyes slowly.
“Cupcake,” his pained voice came out as a whimper. His breath became shallow. He tried to smile at her but it was too painful for him. He instantly closed his eyes as another wave of pain hit his heart. He so wished to rip this heart of his from his chest which caused him so much pain at every full moon.
To his utter surprise, his pain was just reduced as if it almost vanished as Veronica’s delicate hand roamed over his heart. He snapped his eyes open and stared at her blankly. Veronica helped him sit down.
“Are you alright?” Veronica asked, breaking eye contact with his mysterious dark blank eyes. Eli didn’t answer. Instead, he retracted himself from Veronica and put some distance between them. Veronica couldn’t help but observe him concernedly.
Eli’s eyes were closed. His fisted hands turned white as he gripped them as tightly as he could. His breathing grew heavy.
“Eli,” a loud growl stopped Veronica as she got close to him.
“Vicky, mind-link Edwin and leave as soon as he comes,” a deep voice boomed through the room. Veronica almost flinched at the intensity of the voice. This voice was a stranger to her. It was more animalistic than human. Well...he wasn’t a human though, still, she nearly couldn’t recognize Eli’s voice.
Eli’s face changed into a monstrous one, then went back to normal as if his inner beast was trying to come to the surface and Eli was trying his best to control him. But that didn’t scare Veronica. What scared her most was his safety. She was concerned about Eli.
“Vicky, mind-link Edwin and leave with him,” he repeated. The voice sounds as if it was another person. It almost sounded like a series of growls.
Veronica mind-linked Edwin, not because she was scared, but because she knew something was wrong, something was gonna happen and she needed Eddy to fix it. She again tried to get close to him but again, a growl stopped her. She was pushed away by a strong arm. A strong but comforting arm wrapped around her waist and pushed her behind him, pointing his silver sward towards Eli.
“Eddy!” Veronica almost shouted at Edwin, who was glaring at Eli with his red eyes.
“Don’t go near him. He is a demon.”
