Veronica POV
Panic started to build as Edwin collapsed on top of me. He was still wrapping his arms around me protectively even though he was unconscious. I untangled ourselves, moved him gently and laid him on the bed.
“Eddy. Eddy. Look at me. Please. Don’t scare me, you i***t,” I tried to wake him up, patting his cheek. No response. His body temperature started to drop. His heart rate slowed down. No...no...please no... Tears triggered to brim in my eyes.
“Hey. Hey. Stop crying. He is alright. Don’t worry,” Sam’s voice echoed through the room as he rushed towards me. “Please stop crying. I don’t know how to console anyone like Jace and Edd. So please, calm down,” he added.
“What’s happening to him?” I asked in a whisper.
“Come outside. Let’s have a long talk,” he said, going to the living room. I leaned forward to Eddy, showered him with kisses and whispered, ‘Wake up soon.’ Planting the last kiss on the top of his head, I went outside the room.
As soon as I went to the living room, Sam handed me a cup of coffee and gestured for me to sit on the couch beside him. I haven’t had a conversation with him before. But he seems funny, easy to talk with and full of life, unlike my mate. Socializing and etiquette don’t exactly go with Edwin.
“So ...what do you wanna know?” he asked, sipping his coffee. I lowered my gaze and stared at the coffee in my hand on my lap.
“What is happening to him?” I asked Sam, trying not to cry.
“Hibernation,” my head snapped at him as soon as he replied.
“What? Why?” Sam sighed at my outburst.
“Calm down, Vicky. He needed it. He had been losing his energy for the past 2 months. He needed to hibernate to gain it,” Sam said calmly.
“But why?” I whinnied.
“Cause he hasn’t been feeding himself since he met you. He was only living on animal blood, which was not able to energize him properly,” he exclaimed. A sudden frown appeared on my forehead.
Sam continued noticing my confusion, “There’s a legend that mate-bonds grow stronger if mates only feed from each other. And as for unmated vampires, they only fed on the opposite s*x. And it involves s****l desires. According to Edwin, if he feeds on any other woman or female vampire, it will be considered as a cheat on you. So, he refused to touch them, let alone feed.
Moreover, we don’t usually use our power during the day because it requires thirty times more energy than usual. But Edwin just rushed here without thinking about the consequences when he sensed you were in danger. It was a miracle that he still managed to hold himself and used his last ounce of energy to perform magic to save you.”
I was stunned after listening to his explanation. Tears started to build in my eyes. He did this for me. He didn’t feed himself just because he didn’t want to cheat on me. I was the reason he was lying inside lifelessly. “It’s me,” a small whimpered escape from my lips.
“No. It’s not you. Vicky, it’s a blessing for us vampires to find our fated mate. We will do whatever it takes to protect them. And that’s what Edd was doing. So, don’t blame yourself,” he comforted me. I didn’t say anything, just nodded in understanding. “And it’s not like he will sleep for eternity. Vampires don’t hibernate nowadays due to climate change. For normal vampires, the hibernation period was used to usually 6 months. But Edd went on a light hibernation, and due to his royal blood, he might wake up tonight or tomorrow morning. Consider he is sleeping due to exhaustion,” he informed.
“Really!” I literally jumped on the couch in excitement when Sam confirmed with a nod.
“Why didn’t he use stored blood?” I asked, wanting to know more about their food chain.
“He did. But royals need to be fed from a subject every 15 days,” he replied.
“Why don’t you drink from the same gender?” I asked him curiously.
“Vampire fangs contain venom. For male and female vampires, the chemical structure of the venom is slightly different. If any male vampire’s venom is injected inside a human, it will react with testosterone, which may cause deformation or structural change in biological tissue. The change can lead the person to death, or he may change into a vampire. But the venom has no effect on girls,” Sam answered. I threw another few questions at him, to which he responded calmly. Never complain that you have asked too many questions or talked too much.
“Wow, you know a lot of things,” I exclaimed. He chuckled at my comment.
“Jace and Edd taught me well. I didn’t know anything about it. So I mistakenly killed or turned a few people during feeding. Then they taught me how it actually works,” he said, exhaling a deep sigh with a tinge of sadness in his voice.
“You didn’t mean to,” I stated with a smile and squeezed his arms. He returned the smile. We both were silent for a moment before he spoke up.
“You love Edwin?” it was a statement more than a question.
“What do you think?” I answered with another question. I am not going to say anyone before Edwin; he deserves it first.
“I think... It’s a yes,” he replied with a smirk. That’s the Sam I know; funny and cocky.
“What about you? Do you love my Unnie?” his eyes lit up at the mention of Unnie.
“I am destined to love her,” he answered simply.
“Don’t you dare to hurt her, else you have to face me,” I warned him seriously. She has already suffered a lot; I don’t want her to suffer anymore. She deserves happiness.
Sam placed his hand over his heart, bowed and said, “As you commanded, Your Majesty,” in a way the royal soldiers used to do.
“Hey!” I whined and swatted his hand. We both burst out of laughter.
Sam and I chatted for a few more hours. He helped me calm down and relax. If Sam hadn’t come, I would have freaked out. We were laughing about something when my bedroom door slammed open. Both of us stared in that direction with wide eyes.
Edwin POV
War! Blood! A wave of nausea and queasiness can hit anyone due to the smell and sight of blood oozing from the wounds. But I, Edwin William Roberts, was standing there holding a sword with a sinister smile, surrounded by bloody, lifeless bodies. I strode forward, cutting through the creatures in front of me with my silver sward.
A sudden and small cry halted my steps. A baby’s cry. It was like a siren’s singing, enchanting. It pulled me towards the voice like a thread tide with my legs. When I stopped, I saw the baby’s face. She is the most beautiful infant I have ever seen. Her scent was intoxicating. Her dark brown eyes stared at mine. But as I was about to touch her, she disappeared... vanished into thin air.
Then it started. The excruciating pain spread across my chest, making me fall to my knees. It feels as if thousands of needles are piercing through my heart. My heart squeezed tightly, making it hard to breathe.
My eyes snapped open. I was sweating, gasping for air. Another nightmare. Each time it felt so real...so vivid. It feels vivid, as if it’s a glimpse of my past. My heart still hurts like hell, as if it was on fire. I didn’t know how to cure it two months ago, but now I do.
Crawling down the bed, I stormed out of the room, clenching my aching heart. Veronica and Sam were laughing at something. They both stared at my dishevelled state with wide eyes as soon as I stepped outside.
The moment I looked at her face, my heart aching disappeared just as I knew it would. She stood up from her seat and ran towards me. I caught her with open hands and hugged her tightly, inhaling her sweet scent. She enveloped her tiny arms around me. I started showering her with kisses.
I can’t thank God enough that she is safe in my arms. That I had enough strength to save her.
Her warm, soft lips parted slightly, allowing my tongue to slip inside. The kiss was slow and passionate. The taste of her lips and her salty tears was a combination of bliss.
“You could just simply tell me to leave. No need for this display,” my bloody best friend’s voice echoed around the room.
“Get out!” I mumbled between the kisses. I didn’t have the energy to pull away from her. She is so f*****g delicious. I heard Sam leave the apartment and close the door behind him. I needed to thank him later for giving my little one company while I was out.
She was out of breath when we broke the kiss. I held her waist as she was tipsy after the kiss.
“You okay?” her soft voice rang in my ear as she ran her fingers through my messy hair. “ Does it hurt?” she asked, caressing her other hand over my heart. Concern and worry filled her brown eyes. God! How much I love those eyes of hers!
“It was. But as soon as I saw you, it vanished,” I answered with a smile. Her lips curled up. “Looks like I need to keep you in front of my eyes forever,” I commented, earning a giggle from her.
“Then you will get bored of me,” she said. Silly! How can she think that!
“I will never get bored of you,” I assured her, kissing her hard and rough this time.
