4 - Refuge

The soulless gets back to its feet and attacks again. It is clawing and biting at the invisible force that is in front of him, causing the others standing on the other side of this force to be protected. Kay watched this thing the whole time. "Can we drive or is this force of yours going to stop me?" Derick asks with a little panic in his voice. "We can go," Derick hits the gas and the car spins as it tries to get away fast. Kay sees the buildings that have been torn down next to the spilled area. She understands that this has been done so that there can be a clear indication of the new city and the one that once was. The city is busy and there are a lot of people walking around and enjoying themselves with beasts being led by collars and leeches. "Are they being kept as pets?" Kay asks in shock, and Derick bites his lip again. "Yes, some of them are, others need to work. Well, those smart enough demand money for their services," Derick tries to make it sound normal. "Oh wow," Kay is speechless regarding this. Kay's face shows her concern the moment she sees Beasts fighting each other and their masters shouting stuff at them. "Oh, yeah, that's a beast battle," Derick says in a matter-of-fact-like voice, which does not sit well with Kay. How can animals do this? Why are they doing this? "Are there any wild beasts?" Kay asked the question that was about to pop up in her head. "Yes, there is. We can't get to them because they will kill us if we dare to enter their territory. The wolves can visit them by the way," Derick sounds too cheerful at the moment. "Is it because the wolf can't be tamed?" Kay asks him, trying to find the reasons behind this difference with the wolves. "Yes, the wolves are smart, so they won't allow the human to tame them. They will agree to work for money, but won't do just anything. They are the leaders of the beasts and those who are willing to learn from them, become their 'pack'," Derick explains as he uses his finger to show the inverted commas. Kay looks out the window again and observes the way things are being done here. The car comes to a complete stop with the engine beginning to turn off. She gets out and follows Derick into the building. "We don't have any wolves that are willing to become your pet," the receptionist said as she was just looking up at the paperwork. The man asking has gray hair as Mark did and suddenly Kay gasps. This guy looks like Mark with his greenish-steel eyes. "Mr. Reeck!" Derick shakes Mark's look-alike's hand."I just got a wolf here," Derick turns to Kay, and like before they all frown. "She is from another timeline, just like that cat of yours," Derick smiles at the man. "Are you still taking in these cases?" Derick keeps on talking like he usually does. This sort of behavior does not suit that pretty face of his. He would do Ajikis back home no favors for taking so much. "Yes, I still do. So this one is the princess look-alike from the other timeline?" the Mark look-alike asks, and Derick nods at this. "Wow, I am impressed. And she is a wolf?" he asks another question, making Derick nod again. "Okay, I'll take her," the man looks at the receptionist and people start to move. Suddenly someone touches Kay and a growl escapes her mouth. She does not like it when someone is touching her without her permission. The doctor immediately pulls his hands away from her. "She understands us, you guys," Derick informs them all, and this is new. Wolves tend to be smarter than the others and they can learn the masters way quickly. Some can even speak a few words. "We need to make sure that you are healthy," the Mark look-alike tries to communicate first with her. "I am healthy. I am a wild wolf," Kay glares at the doctor, making sure he stays his distance. "Just for our peace of mind and making sure that you don't have any diseases, please let the doctor check you out," he tries to reason with her and Kay glares at the male doctor again."I want a female doctor," Kay gives her opinion and the man nods at her. "Right away Mister Reeck," the doctor moves away to go and call a female one. "What is your name?" Reeck tries to get Kay distracted. "Kay," she gives him the answer and it sure does seem to everyone that she understands them. The female doctor arrives and smiles at Kay with a confused look on her face. "She is from another time like. Just like the gentleman's cat," Derick explains to her and her face shows relief. "She looks human," the female doctor frowns at her appearance. "Oh, tail and ears?" Kay asks and lets her white wolf ears appear with her beautiful rainbow tail with a white streak laying on top of the colors. "A female wolf," she sounds amazed by this. Reeck just studies Kay. "Do you van die collar her, Mister Reeck?" An officer hands the paperwork to him. "Before she follows you, doctor," Reeck stops the female doctor before she calls Kay to follow her. "Kay, please fill in the parts that apply to you," Reeck wants to do another test on her. "It's going to be ugly though," Kay wiggles her stump at him. "I recently lost my writing arm," Kay does not sound sad or upset by it. She has already accepted her injury. "Oh, right. Okay, I'll fill it in for you," Reeck goes and stands with her as she reads the page. "Age is 16, turned 16 about 2 weeks ago," Kay shows him where to write it down and everyone in the room is amazed. "Tell me, are you a werewolf?" Reeck whispers to her so that the others can't hear what he has to say to her. Kay gave a nod and Reeck smiled at that, continuing with the form. Kay gives Reeck all the information before she follows the doctor for her check-up. Derick smiles at Reeck for taking Kay in. He is glad she will be with someone that is kind and will put his pets to good use. Not every Master treats their pets well. "What collar would you like?" A shop assistant from a pet accessory shop in the building comes closer to guide Reeck to the shop. Reeck studies the pieces they have set out for him, but none of them looks like they will be nice on Kay. "What about the white one?" Reeck sees a white collar with a document embedded in it. The collar tag is silver and her name can be engraved on it. "What is her name?" another shop assistant asks as he takes out the collar. "Kay," he answers him, and as he pays for it the one that calls him closer for a look helps with the payment while the other one waits for the payment to go through so that he can go and engrave her name with her owner's details. Kay shakes her body as she makes another appearance She has a little growl for the doctor who just smiles at her. "She is in full health. She has remarkable healing, speed, and strength in that body of hers. You are very lucky to have a wolf again Aden," the doctor uses Reeck's first name. Aden just nods at the doctor. They dated a few years back. She cheated on him back then. "Here you go Sir," the store assistant hands him the box. "Now Kay. I know you may feel offended and angry at what I am about to give you, but it is the law to have every beast you are taking care of to have this," Aden tries to be as gentle and friendly as possible. Kay does not like the sound of it, but she understands that whatever it is, it must be done. Aden opens the box and Kay sees the white-collar with the most beautiful diamond engravements. They glitter like her rainbow collars to when the sun hits her marks just right. Kay picked up her hair that was in a pony mess for Aden to secure it around her neck. Kay can feel him now, she now knows exactly where he is. It works as her bracelet does. "Wow, that looks great on her!" the female doctor comments, Aden can hear she is trying to score points with him again. He just ignores her for that. "Ready to go?" Aden asks Kay and she nods. "Come on, follow me," Aden greets the others and moves to his car. Kay climbs in at the back and is greeted by a woman on the passenger side of the front. "A female?" the woman asks Aden as he closes his door after he gets in. "Yes, she is female," Aden confirms and the woman looks at Kay again, who is also just staring at the woman. The woman has blond hair and blue eyes and is beautiful and skinny. Well, for a normal person she is skinny. "Why exactly did you want a wolf again?" she does not sound happy with what she is seeing. "They are very loyal when they are treated correctly," Aden explains again to his girlfriend. "Why a girl wolf?" she keeps on asking questions. "Do you have a problem with the fact that she is a female?" Aden asked her directly this time. He can get irritated with someone very quickly. "No," she lies, and Kay growls at her. "Why are you lying?" Kay asks the question and the girl looks at her in shock. She looked at Aden to see if he knew that she could talk. She sits back in her seat and looks out the window at the passing building on their way to the farm Adena has. He has a lot of land there and his pets can be free there also.
